Gunsmithing AICS mags arent running well........

Re: AICS mags arent running well........

What's your set-up? Like I said in the Remington the feed lips will just miss the bolt lugs. Unless you did something bad to those mags they're plug and play. Not easy to bend those fed lips.

Just for SAG I checked two new mags that were handy, one is .3980 the other is .4000

Re: AICS mags arent running well........

Are the nose dives under the receiver's feed ramp? Sometimes if the rounds slide forward in the mag (or are at mag length) the feed ramp will need to be relieved for them to feed all the time every time.

Again what is the set-up? What round or caliber? What OAL? Your mags sound fine. If the bottom metal wasn't bedded correctly this could also cause an issue. Like sobrbiker883 said if the OAL is too long this can cause issues if the fed ramp is not notched.

Re: AICS mags arent running well........

its a stock rem 700 receiver with badger bottom metal. oal is 2890 caliber is 260. I did the feeler gage mod so I have plenty of room. Stock is AICS 1.5

Re: AICS mags arent running well........

got my stocks mixed up. I had the badger bottom in my A5 then I sold it for the AICS. I kept the mags. Im gonna bend the springs like I do in my pistol mags. maybe look into a stiller action.

Re: AICS mags arent running well........

Bent springs won't get you a longer opeining in your receiver, but go right ahead......
2.890" OAL will run into the feed ramp on a R700 with an M5 bottom metal (don't have my AICS any more so I can't reliably comment). Not a hard fix, but something some folks don't want to do. The modified ramp on mine still runs fine back in a factory stock with factory mag box (mine would hang up 2.815's" if I didn't check that the rounds were all the way back or ran hard on the move):

Nothing wrong with the mags. Your rounds are too long for the action. You need to notch the feed ramp to clear the bullet tip. They might feed while sitting on your bench but under recoil the round will move around and the bullet tip will get caught under the feed ramp. Pulling springs isn't going to help your problem.

Re: AICS mags arent running well........

This may not be the perfect way, but its what I did-
Pull the bottom from a mag, remove spring and follower. Insert mag body into rifle, and scribe a line from the inside of the mag even with the front of the inside of mag body.
Take action out and remove metal up to line. Chamfer where cut meets ramp for good measure. Cold blue or finish however you like.

Re: AICS mags arent running well........

ok Im done. everything works great! I cut and polished the ramp and beveled the magwell while was in the neighborhood. No more feeding problems. Thanks for the help guys!!!!!

Re: AICS mags arent running well........

If you remove the tab of metal in the front of your AICS magazine for longer bullets then you will likely need to modify the receiver also. This is the same mod on a Rem 700 with the AICS stock and was a simple fix with the dremel tool.
