For a Rem 700 .308 I like the look of an AICS stock, I have never held one but based of what I keep seeing they are amazing. I am looking at getting one, but don't know if I want the fixed stock or the folding one, again I have never seen either one in person. Also what would be the pros and cons of a folding vs a fixed? Would it affect the long range accuracy of the weapon? Thanks for putting up with another new long range shooter.

Thanks for any help everyone,

Sean

Re: AICS stock

I'll save you the trouble... the folder locks up tight. I was in your same position with never seeing one before... I went with the 1.5 (non-folder) simply because I have no need of the shorter stow-ability.

I absolutely love it.

Both are typically heavier than the fiberglass stocks. Could allow you to use a mag system if you don't already have one.
Fixed = cheaper
Folding = extra cool factor with easy to clean feature + bit more weight

The stock could help on accuracy only if the current setup is not free floated or has some other issues with it's mounting.

Re: AICS stock

Right now it has a HS precision stock on it, 26" barrel. But can you convert it to a box mag? I kept seeing the AICS stock with a mag but figured I was looking at the wrong one. Again forgive the ignorance, but I just figured that was for a different rifle, not a conversion to mag fed

Re: AICS stock

Box Magazine conversion is included and is integrated into the design. Bolt your barreled action in (no bedding necessary) and head out.

Here is my Rem 5R Milspec:

Re: AICS stock

The cool thing about the AICS chasis is that you dont have to buy a seperate bottom metal setup it is built in so that makes the prices a little more competitive if you were going to add a DBM setup any way. I think they are a slick stock and if I ever had the funds to get one I would. The folder is pretty cool but I coulndt justify paying the extra unless I needed the shorter ability.

Re: AICS stock

Extra mags are more affordable from Triad , this is relative, remember this is AI.

As far as improving accuracy, the stock really does not have an advantage over a properlly bedded conventional stock.

What made mine more accurate was myself being more comfortable and consistant.

I went with the folder, and now feel it was worth it for portabillity and cleaning is easier.

Like you I didn't get to handle one previouslly, and thought the thumbhole stocks are hideous, but the practicality and performance won me.

Kind of like a Glock.

I still don't stick my thumb in the hole as not to feel dirty.

Re: AICS stock

Where in the big state of Texas are you? I'm looking at doing the same thing. It sounds like you have a 700P. If we are close enough to each other, whoever gets one first can let the other check it out.

I'm wondering if the AICS 1.5 precludes cleaning the bore from the rear through the chamber. Or if lowering the cheek piece is sufficient to clean the bore through the chamber.

Another question is whether it matters whether one has an oversize recoil lug on their 700 barreled action with the AICS.

Another question is whether AICS chassis modifications have to be made to use the Xmark Pro trigger, or some of the aftermarket triggers.

You can also try Mile High Shooting at http://www.milehighshooting.com/ and ask for the Snipers Hide Forum member 5% discount.

Same with Lin at Schryver Gun Sales at http://www.schryvergunsales.com/ for the Snipers Hide Forum Member discount.

Schryver Gun Sales supports the Forum. I'm not sure about Mile High Shooting. I suspect so, but don't know for sure.

Re: AICS stock

I have had an AICS 2.0 (folder) for about 3 months now and really like it. Absolutely rock solid. My custom 260 Rem shoots 0.2" (sometimes 0.1") groups at 100m, so they definitely work. Whoever fits the action, make sure they do it right. I had mine assembled by Jered Joplin, of American Precision Arms. Their reputation is impeccable.
If you have not already check out Adam Bauer of Bauer Arms for your AICS stock. A sponsor of the Hide and great guy to do business with. He also has AI magazines. I purchased two 10 rd magazines (308 cal) for mine for around $70/ea. This was the best deal that I could find during August 2009.

Anyone in the Austin/San Antonio area have one they'd be willing to let us handle?

Re: AICS stock

I'm NW of Houston but not to far, pretty close to Tomball if you know were that is. But I'm getting the rifle in a week or so from a friend of mine, but yes it's a 700 PSS. But I pretty much decided that I'm getting the 2.0 so now it's a matter of time and saving up. I'm also new to reloading so that will prob slow down my cash flow towards a stock.

Re: AICS stock

I had to decide betweent the 2 of them also. I went with the folder and I am glad I did. I put a 5r in mine and also an sps tac. Because of how much I liked the ai set up, I have since sold both of them and gotten an ai ae. You should see a little better accuracy out of the ai if you have not bedded the gun you are shooting now. The ai fits the action better than the stock hs or so it did on mine. Both of my rems were pretty accurate to start out with but it seemed like they both tightened up some after putting them in the ai. There are usually a few of the used/new ai folders and non folders for sale on here that are a couple of hundred bucks less than what they are going for from a dealer. Mile High or Bauer arms is where I got mine from.

Re: AICS stock for a Rem 700

I've gone with a folder every time. Biggest reason is ease of cleaning. For me with a Premier 5-25 I have the cheek rest set a little higher and so I never have to worry about moving it to clean it, just fold out of the way.
It is also really nice when it comes to traveling being able to use a smaller storm case or a full size and still have room for pistol, LRF, and mags.
Go with the 2.0, cry once buy once.

Re: AICS stock for a Rem 700

As others said... to be able to simply fold the butt away for cleaning is a definite plus.

I store the rifle with butt folded in Pelican 1750 and that leaves room for plenty of other gears for plane travel.

Re: AICS stock for a Rem 700

I have the non-folding AICS stock. I would have liked the buy the 2.0 folding version, but I bought my rifle off the wall at my buddy's shop with the non folder already installed.

Here's another plus about the 2.0 folder, yes it's more expensive....BUT you'll save the money when you can purchase a smaller rifle case (Pelican, Storm, etc)

Either way you can't beat it. My rifle shoots 1/2 MOA allllll day. My only upgrade is the AICS!!

168gr SMK - 43.5grs IMR4895 - Win, Hornady or Lapua brass - 2.05 to 2.015 case length - CCI BR2 - 2.800 to 2.820 COAL

This load is 1/2 MOA and isn't picky when it comes to the tolerances you keep while loading....I must be in the "node"

Re: AICS stock

There is the "Clean" word again.

If you for some unkown reason feel the need to clean your bore, slip off the cheek rest and have at it! Or just don't clean it... I pity da' foo' that cleans my rifle. I finally have it shooting where I want it to.

Re: AICS stock

I just got a 2.0 folder and I really wondered if I was going to like it. Now that I have felt it I really like it and it is very comfortable. I love the folder as it is easy to carry for hunting season.

Re: AICS stock

I've got a 1.5 with a R5-would not change a thing.....in 24 years of tact shooting this is by far the easiest stock to drive I have ever used. I think it helps accuracy by covering up for less than perfect form at times. Its a very flexible platform and user adaptable. I went with the 1.5 because I have seen the 2.0 get a touch loose and rattlely after very hard field use. Now I mean a "little loose and a little rattlely" not a ton and it was extreme hard use conditions away from maintenance let alone a mailbox or UPS driver to update parts. But these things were years old and still took a beating and kept shooting staight and are still going strong today. But in the field you have no reason to ever use the folder.......it may be nice for transport via vehicle or plane.
