Rifle Scopes Aimpoint on bolt gun?

I have a dilemma regarding scope option on my rifle. Primary use for the rifle is for extended ranges. It is a TRG 20" with 5.5-22 NXS. I will be attempting to take this rifle on overnight hunts, and the areas where this rifle will be used is from open to dense vegetation.

I now have an issue with the NXS not having a large enough FOV for close quarters. I like this scope, and would like to keep it on the rifle. I also would like to leave this scope perminantly on the rifle.

I have an idea of using Badger rings with the replacement scope cap with angled rail. I would then mount an Aimpoint T-1 with quick release base on this rail. Then the Aimpoint can be removed when not needed, but when the time comes, simple to just mount and use.

This idea feasible... or am I just throwing money away.

Any other ideas?

"Back up" sights are just that,IMHO.Not good for a primary sight if you are serious about your hunting.Just an opinion......

Yeah, the Aimpoint would be the backup sight.. when the vegetation gets thick and I need a close quarter optic the Aimpoint T-1 would go on... other than that the Aimpoint would not be on the rifle!!

In my head it seems to work.. but then again I have spent lots of money buying gear that really didnt fit the purpose!!

Better to ask now...

you can go with Trijicon TR24.

or, if your targets will be inside 200 meters range solo Aimoint T-1 on quick throw-off lever will work also fine.

But TR24 red triangle (or green triangle) is better than Aimoint, because it's near as fast as red-dot on 1x and got a 4x capability.

i've tried to mount aimpoint over NF 5.5-22 - but the weight of the system makes it's rather useless to shoot off-hand... i mean if you had NXS compact 2.5-10x32 - then it'll be good for red-dot on top of it (45 degree) and still will have reasonable weight.

Your idea is not a silly one... HOWEVER mounting the secondary (non magnified) optic on top of your primary will undoubtedly force you into an uncomfortable cheek weld when (on the very odd occasion) that it is actually utilized.

If you run a picatinny rail on you TRG then there are a few side mounts available to mount the T1 on. If you are using the factory dovetail then I think your only option for what I have suggested will be the Spuhr mount.

AI,

It sounds like you have too much scope, and are not comfortable with it.

Try looking at the new Leupold or the new S&B. A short range scope is still a benefit too.

It helps to also keep your hunting rifle as lightweight as possible.

Mate, the scope I like. It is at a price point that I dont mind getting scratches. This rifle gets shot at all distances and I like the magnification.

Adding the aimpoint will allow quick shots closer.... I hope. I guess I should ask which is best way to mount to the TRG.

If your mounting your NF on the Sako pic rail with rings Badger Ord. makes several mounting options for a T-1.


If you already had the Spuhr scope mounting system, it would be a similarly economical choice.

This is what I currently have. Sako TRG 20" 308. Scope is 5.5-22 NXS. Rail is 20moa Badger. Rings are Seekins.

What would be best mounting solution for the T1 aimpoint that is quick release? As mentioned I would like to leave the NXS perminantly fixed to the rifle. I guess comes down to head position with the aimpoint.

a larue mounted aimpoint would work
i also like the low power 1.5-5 leupold , cause at least you still have crosshairs if the illumination goes down

i was watching a show on coast guard interdiction and they were shooting a mcbros .50bmg with an aimpoint out of the chopper

I did something similar. Mounted a Leupold Deltapoint onto the scope of one of my rifles with a TNVC mount. Made my a$$ pucker a little less when going into heavy brush.

I am sold on the Spuhr mount. Looks like thats a great option. Add the accessory rail and there is the mounting point for the Aimpoint. Have a couple of different mounting options too with the Spuhr....

I see a couple of pictures with a reflex sight. Would one of these be a better option for my use over the Aimpoint T-1?

Wouldn't it piss ya off that I missed the Spuhr group buy now!!!

Here is a thought. Carry a second weapon for close in shots. It is what I do. When I'm hunting I carry at least two firearms and sometimes three. Basically I carry some sort of short carbine or a shotgun for when I'm in the thick stuff and long shots are not possible and then I carry a scoped rifle for longer shots.

I would think a secondary optic might weigh a little less.

If you are using an quad/ATV or driving around in your vehicle then yes...

Walking around with firearms dripping off you (resembling John Rambo) is not very practical.

Have you thought about a Dr. Optics or some other micro red dot. You can get a mount that will fit your scope main tube. It is small, light and you won't have to deal with any switch-o-change-o.

I have decided to go to a red dot. Smaller and lighter. Now just which one?

Been looking at Trijicon RMR dual illumination, Doctor, Leupold Deltapoint, Insight mrds. To many choices. Comes down to mounting options for a quick release. Deltapoint doesnt have any!!

One poor man's method I have found to work well for me is to close the objective lens scope cap, turn on the illumination, and shoot both eyes open. Works pretty well for quick engagements inside of 25 yards. This doesn't work for everyone though, some people find it awkward and have a hard time with both eyes open. Another tip, use your 700 yard dope for point of aim point of impact shots for close upshots and when shooting straight down.

Hey mate, trijicon RMR or the Burris Fastfire..

I Know a number of guys that are using both with great success, mounted either at 12 o'clock and 1 o'clock on both gas and bolt guns.

This is probably a good solution for you. Its the Larue LT137 which requires use of their other QD mounts. I had the same issue so I went with this on my DTA - much faster target pickup for short range freehand.

If aiming lasers are not illegal where you live, that might be a viable option too. Green would be most likely necessary for daytime visibility (I have trouble finding my ITAL red laser during the day).

It's not a bold gun, but in Iraq we had an Aimpoint mounted on our SASR and worked amazingly for 500 and in.

Seriously, depending on your terrain (and you mentioned some thick brush?) I wouldn't be out there with out my Hide Fighter/Reeves Warrior knife, and at least a .40 or .45 caliber handgun.

If you're like most of us, it's much quicker and easier to get a handgun on target than it is a rifle.

I would just get a lower magnification primary optic, I can make shots easily past 700 meters with 3-12x50 PMII's on my rifles
