Hunting & Fishing Air skinning a coyote.

Re: Air skinning a coyote.

Interesting. May have to give that a try someday. I might fill up my portable tank and do this in the field right after the hunt. Thanks for the link.

If it works as good on yotes as it does on deer, it's worth a try. did my first deer with the air tank a couple weeks ago and it was AWESOME. buddy has a snapon air gun we used in the detail shop - he sharpened the end like a hypodermic....it sticks right in and you just pinch the skin around the tube. squeeze the lever and watch the balloon fill up...Kinda neat to watch

Re: Air skinning a coyote.

the impression you get is once you "blow" em up full of air, it separates the hide from the body, to the point when you skin it, it just, "pulls off"... it takes me 15-20 min to skin one after i tried this, and it takes me 15 min to skin one without, because i don't have to worry about fillin the damn thing full of air, never tried it on deer, if you skin over 40 dogs a year its a waste of time, but hey it looks like fun right... until the carcass gets full and the air starts bleeding out of your incision hole, and it smells worse than any STINKING COYOTE you ever skinned!!!

Re: Air skinning a coyote.

If "air skinning" was the bee's knees, you know someone in the fur business would have built, and peddled a device specifically for "air skinning".

Honestly, what works better is a simple winch system to do the pulling while you do the cutting. However, you STILL have to "hand peel" the rear legs when you start the process, and still have to "hand peel" the skull and front legs. The front end and ass end of a coyote are the most time consuming parts, everything in between is childs play.

hahaha! we used to do that with a tractor!!! i know how well that works!

Re: Air skinning a coyote.

Golf ball method..... you don't need a 4 wheeler or vehicle to do it. If you have a sturdy enough anchor on the ground or floor, tie golf ball in with a short rope to floor anchor. Raise deer up with a manual or electric chain hoist. Works like a charm.

Re: Air skinning a coyote.

I worked for a butcher shop for many years and when we skinned deer that were not for capes, mounts, and tanning we would run seems with a utility knife with a shingle blade, they kinda have a hook on the end,and split them down the backto the tail, peel them like a banana,3 minutes done.
