Alaska
<span style="font-weight: bold"> </span> Well Gents it's officially summer here on the Kenai Peninsula. Day before yesterday the Red (Sockeye) salmon run hit the Kenai river in force. As you'll see in the following pictures, it brings folks out of the woodwork to harvest their limits and fill the freezer. Our family and friends dipnetted 112 fish in 1-3/4 hrs. The drift fleet had an emergency opening, the setnetters were busy and the dipnetters slaughtered them.

Re: Alaska Salmon Harvest

I did the dipnetting thing a couple of times on the Chitina River. Cost me a fortune. Truck broke down, had to get towed in to Chitina, spent the night behind the bar, then got towed in to Glenallen. Spent almost a week there waiting for the parts to get delivered from Valdez. Only had caught 2 salmon.

Sold the nets and just bought it at the store after that. :)

LX:
Great photos. We just clicked over 1 million past the front door. Used to do the canning but became to labor intense. Have all our smokers done just need to put some regular fillets in the freezer for the rain gutter and cedar plank on the grill thing during the winter.
Can not believe the crowds. Looks like Woodstock II

Re: Alaska Salmon Harvest

OK now post some pictures of "COMBAT FISHING" on the Russian River.

Great photos, thanks, brings back memories. Spent many days in a 14 ft Jon Boat, mooching for kings and halibut of Anchor Point and snagging salmon at Gulkana.

Not so much at the mouth of the river, but they do on the Russian.

Re: Alaska Salmon Harvest

I did a Salmon season on a boat off of Kodiak after I got out of the Army.

Notice the Red color of the salmon, not the orange dyed stuff of the supermarket. The wild kind is the best kind.

Re: Alaska Salmon Harvest

We don't have the quantity, maybe not even the quality but in the PNW we do get fresh salmon and it's good.

FYI a friend used to dive for the salmon farms over by Braindead island and he was allowed to keep any that were almost dead.

So he brought me one over, it was orange not red - that's Atlantic Salmon - not sure they dye it or not....wasn't bad but nothing like the real thing..

Re: Alaska Salmon Harvest

I'll be there soon. Doing some self guided saltwater fishing with a rented boat out of Homer for lings and halibut, then Valdez for silver salmon around the third week of August. Ten straight days of fishing. I'm working on my leaders and getting my gear prepared right now.

Re: Alaska Salmon Harvest

I actually heard that Sockeye is one of the more rarer salmon and the numbers were way down from the past... True?... I do go crazy over it when we get down here in Tn.. I usually buy a couple of pounds of it

Re: Alaska Salmon Harvest

There's plenty of them up here. We had 260,000 show up yesterday in the river, and that's after the commercial guys had their way with them. Western AK and southcentral generally have good runs. Ugashik Bob said there's over 1 million at his location. Plenty for all!!

Wow. I fished that river further upstream a few years back. If you havent been to Alaska, you NEED to go. Better than you expect. Amazing place!

So you just walk out into the rivers with a big net (dipnet) and scoop them up and drag them to shore? What is the limit per day by the way? </div></div>

Yep, as the tide rolls in the fish do too. I think the limit is 25 for the head of the house and 10 for add'tl members. There is also a limit to the size of the net.

Re: Alaska Salmon Harvest

That is so not right to post those pictures. My mouth is watering! I have to come up there to see all yall have. I think I could live there if I could just make a living. I am sick of the Texas heat too. It has been over 100 here in Texas for 50 plus days straight.

</div></div>

Most folks cure them and use it for bait to catch the fall run of silvers. A lesser amount of peeps eat them.

Re: Alaska Salmon Harvest

Yes sir you are right....

The true defintion of combat fishing is on the Russian river at Coopers landing. Standing side to side with every drunk in town and every tourist that just can't resist the urge to snag themselves a few Salmon....

Of course they call it "lining" the Salmon, everyone else calls it snagging...
