Alternatives to FGMM 175 gr, .308

I am going to be taking a class shooting my LMT MWS with a 16" CL barrel up to 600 yards. I am having trouble finding the FGMM 308M2 load, that is the .308, 175 gr. SMK, for a reasonable price. I am, however, finding some of the 762M2 load which is spec'd as a 7.62 round. That makes me think it is loaded lighter for M1As and M14s. I have found it for $20.05 a box and perhaps as low as $180/200 IIRC. Is that a suitable replacement? What about XM118LR? I have seen that bulk packed at $480/500. How would that work out to 600? What are some other alternatives? Keep in mind that I need 450+ rounds for the class and I would hope to shoot another 300-400 <span style="font-style: italic">before</span> the class in September, so I need to keep the price as low as I can.

I love 7.62 FGMM in my MWS! The 7.62 FGMM in my experience, shoots the same as .308 FGMM. I actually prefer the 7.62 load over the .308 load because it has crimped primers. I had some Fiocchi match grade 168gr with SMK bullet and I was popping primers about every 5th or 6th round. They would fall into the FCG and disable the trigger and sometimes the primer pieces would get caught in the bolt face and not allow the rifle to go into battery. I switched to 175gr 7.62 FGMM and have not popped a primer since. I would also recommend XM118LR or M118LR as its almost/pretty much indentical to 7.62 FGMM...or atleast that's what I've read on the forums. Don't hold me to it though and congrats on the MWS.

That is the "7.62 load" at CTD, and I don't know what the difference is between that and the .308 load. My guess is that the 7.62 load is lighter so you don't bend op rods on M14s. I don't know if that would make a differnce.

This is my first choice since I already have 300 or so rounds on hand and my rifle is zeroed with it.

Check out Copper Creek or Southwest Ammo. Both are Hide sponsors and make good 175gr SMK loads. Buy a case of whichever shoots best in your MWS.

Sorry, you are correct I paid 20.05 per box, got 20 boxes the other week (must have told the wife I paid less :)). SGAmmo should have the FGMM 500 round deal back up in a few weeks according to Sam. I believe that was about $480/500. I will be getting a case when they come in.

The 168gr is all labeled .308, the 175gr is labeled 7.62x51 even if it says .308 on the internet listing.

As it turns out, the much beloved Cheaper Than Dirt now has the 308M2 load in stock for $20.40 a box, so I ordered 35. That gives me 250 rounds for practice and the 450 needed for my upcoming class.

I have seen two different labels on 175 grain loads. One is the GM762M2 and the other is GM308M2. As I have said before, I think the 762 load is slightly lighter for the M14. Can anyone verify this, one way or the other.

The FGMM 7.62 is loaded with the military brass that was left over from some contract. The FGMM.308 is loaded with the shiny brass for civilian customers. This topic has been talked about over and over since the fgmm 7.62 labeling came out. The 7.62 also have crimped primers.

There is supposed to be no difference in pressures.

YMMV...

The .308 is right at 2.8", the 7.62 is more like 2.82" or 2.83".

So the 7.62 won't work in .308 PMags.

My experience anyway.

Hmmm, I just shot 80 rounds of 7.62 FGMM through my MWS using PMAG's...
