Just kidding, but I'd like to know what you think about this load.

I have an 8 twist 22-250AI that I have been shooting 70gr VLDs out of for quite a while. I have always used H380 mainly because I had 8lbs of it. Well, I burnt through all of that, and now I'm on to something more temp stable. I had some H-1000 laying around that I use in my 300WM so I decided to give it a try. When I work up loads with new powders in this rifle I typically use 220 swift load data to get started, but I usually end up 1-2gr above the book max for the swift as my max load in the 250. The funny thing is that with H-1000 the published max for the swift is 44gr, so I loaded up to (in .3gr increments) 46gr!

I'm going to run the ladder tomorrow after work and will report back...if I'm able.

Man, 46gr of anything seems like a lot in a 250...CRUNCH!!!

Wish me luck.

Well, I own two 22-250 Ackleys, but neither of them is an 8 twist. I use 64&65 grain bullets. But anyway, I use 44.0 gains of H414. PMC brass. My velocities are above 3900fps with a 29" barrel. You won't get that speed with a 70VLD, doubtful? I can't get decent accuracy with the 70, there are limits after all. I would give H414 a try in that case, it's really accurate and meters very well. BB, that is one loooong barrel! How many rounds do you have through it so far? With H380 and 70VLDs or 75 AMAX I have been averaging around 3200fps. I'm not pushing these very hard, I think during load development I saw 3380 a time or two but decided to back it off a bit. Accuracy was quite a bit better around the 3200 mark.

My only reason for changing powers is to gain temperature stability. I know that H-1000 is very temp stable, and when you live in South Dakota that is very important. As I said, I will be testing these loads tomorrow, the high temp is to be hovering around 100, when I use this rifle for coyote hunting in the winter temps regularly get to -10 to -30 degrees. That's a huge swing and H380 was not up to the challenge.

If it works out there is the added bonus that I get to use 1 powder in 2 rifles.
