1. SSRI adverse effects and dependence
2. Opioid crisis
3. Increasing suicide rates

I dropped the AMA when they supported Obamacare. I also think that AMA should keep its nose out of non-medical politics like "gun violence"
"Stupidity" is the true 'public health crisis'. The vast majority of that, being only the stupid would think that an inanimate object is the cause of evil. Whereas it is the broken-ness of the person's brain that is the problem(s).
There may be exceptions but it seems like the entire public health field is a bunch of killjoys who want to ban anything fun.

They know I have 'em, I talked to primary care doc at the VA and he's into shooting too. Another doc not so much but he understands I've had firearms for going on 34 years now and I'm a responsible owner and I don't have problems or go looking for trouble. Not suicidal, don't wanna hurt anyone. There's no reason to bother me, and they have to have a good reason and it has to go through a judge I think. I think you have to be involuntarily committed too.
I also kinda think they can just tell I own 'em from looking at me but maybe that's just me. Although the Sico hat was probably a giveaway the time or two I wore it. I do avoid wearing the "Lights Out Motherfucker" one from TNVC when I go to the doctor though.
But when they ask in order to fill out a form, I tell 'em "not applicable".

Years ago, I fucked up bad and ended up derailing my life with a terrible mistake. I ended up being put in a psych unit for a week for observation. It was the last place I wanted to be but I went along with it. Motherfuckers knew I had shit from a previous H&P. On discharge, this little fuck psychiatrist, whom I will slap in the face if I ever see him again, wouldn’t discharge me until someone removed “the gun” from my apartment. Called my gf at the time and told her to tell them she removed “the gun”. Christ if they really knew the story. Anyway I was discharged and this little scumbag says to me, “no guns for a year”. I was like ok homes. Fuck him; I went shooting like 2 days later

Well as it stands now, patient notes cannot state anything about the patient lying. So if asked, and you say no, the notes have to objectively report the interaction, “patient denies”.

Quarter million (251,454) killed by medical errors, every year. Third leading cause of death, only bested by heart disease and cancer. This doesn't even take into account how many people doctors get hooked on opioids, benzos, etc by overprescribing medication and failing to treat the causes of their conditions that leads to their death.
My father is a patient at a pain management clinic, and has been since late-2016. His doctor is an anaesthesiologist (sp?), and one of the "good guys" in the industry, who has patient well-being as his top priotity. I know from stories he's told us, that there tons of doctors in the same field that are prescription-happy, but it's not like it used to be years ago, because of all the attention given to "the opiod crisis".
His thought is that a lot of the prescription opiods hitting the streets are coming from elderly patients who are selling all or part of their scripts, out of financial necessity (fixed income's just not enough these days, for a lot of them).
Every time I get my father's prescriptions filled, I talk with the pharmacist about the tragedy of people being forced to choose between food and the out-of-control cost of some prescription drugs.
It is flat-out criminal, and absolutely not only ridiculous, but offensive to hear organizations like the AMA attempt to take a position of ANY kind of moral high ground, when the medical industry is clearly driven by profit.
As "customers", patients are held hostage by opaque pricing schemes, deliberately confusing rules, insurance regulations, and billing schemes that make little sense, even to people who work in the industry.
The AMA should work to fix the MESS that is "healthcare", before they spend any time taking political stances that will only alienate a gigantic number of patients in this country.

I have only had one doctor ask about guns when I still lived in NY. I did my best shocked face and said ‘absolutely not, I voted for hillary so we could get rid of those things.’ Always a good idea to keep NY state off your scent.
