Rookie here so please accept my appologies for the stupid question. I am getting a custom rifle and want to start doing some distant shooting (200yds out). I know good ammo is crutial for zeroing in the scope and maintaining accuracy. I have heard a lot about Federal Premium, but would like to know what others are using (other than reloaded). If I need to add more info about what I am shooting please let me know. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks,
Ken

Anything "match" will be better than the cheap stuff. What rifle are you shooting and what twist rate on the barrel? That will help with choosing a proper weight bullet. 1:12 usually lighter ammo, 1:11 usually 165-168, and 1:10 usually likes the 175gr on up although these are just guidelines. Federal gold medal match, Balck Hills, Hornady match or Amax, etc are all accurate in lots of different rifles. I would start with 168gr Federal GMM.

Re: Ammo recommendation for 308 Target

I really like Black Hills match ammo. If you are shooting under 600 yards get the 168's, otherwise go with 175's. Federal Gold Medal Match is good too but my rifle much prefers the Black Hills. Also Southwest Ammo is quality ammo and reasonably priced.

WOW! That was fast!
I actually have two rifles that I am going to be shooting (both 308s). One it a TC Custom and has a twist rate of 1:11 with a 20" barrel and the other is custom Remington 700 with a 20" Pac Nor bull barrel. Not sure on the twist rate, but in looking at the chart on their web site they recommend a 1:10 or 1:12 twist (odd that they don't recommend a 1:11?). Pac Nor Barrels I am going to start off shooting at 200yds but would like to go much farther out.
What do you think of THIS ammo? (the 105-200-480) It is on sale for a great price.
Thanks again guys,
Ken

Re: Ammo recommendation for 308 Target

FGMM is pretty much the standard that other match ammo is judged by. 168gr or 175gr just depends on what your rifle likes, get a couple boxes of both and try'em out. I would get mine from Palmetto State Armory though, their price for the 175gr stuff is really cheap. Click Here

Re: Ammo recommendation for 308 Target

You can't go wrong with the 168 grain Federal GMM. However,I like Southwest Ammunition's 308/175SMK Premium. It is very consistent, with a 26 inch barrel the speed is about 2730 fps. I think it is a bit more accurate than the Federal.

Plus, if you're reloading, you'll have Lapua brass when you're done.

Edit: keninsb, I noticed you're in California. It may be worth your while to look at the local gun shows. There is an outfit at California and Nevada shows called Miwall Ammo where you can get a good deal on Federal. I got 400 rounds of 168 FGMM for $380.

Re: Ammo recommendation for 308 Target

Forgot to mention that the Corbon particularly for me the 175 load is also incredible, Black Hills match is a good round as well.

Try FGMM, southwest ammo, Corbon(also Hide sponsor if you call they will give a discount if you tell them you are a hide member), and Black Hills and just pick the one your budget and rifle like the best.

Thanks again everyone, that is great information. I will buy a few boxes of the top recommendations and give them a try. I REALLY appreciate all the advice.
