Amount of powder allowed in Texas

Tried to search for a post pertaining to the amount of powder that is allowed to be stored in a home.

I found a few post for other states, but nothing about Texas.

Does anyone have a link to an official website ( such as BATE, or Texas Laws? )

I just don't want to be over the limit.

I have read that you can keep up to 50lb in a wooden crate with walls at least 1in thick, and up to 800 lb in a permanent cabinet with walls up to 1in thick.

Just not sure if this is for all of USA or not.

Everywhere I buy powder/ primers it says to check your state laws, but no info on how to locate those laws.

Somewhat off topic...
Wouldn't storing powder in a fully enclosed crate/cabinet/safe create a nice bit of shrapnel in a fire (not that you wouldn't have other things to worry about)?

once lived in Addison TX, rented at the time....and the fire dept passed a circular around wanting to know about stored flammables and gunpowder and ammo......do not think there are any state laws, but may have some local ordinances.....ask the local Fire dept.

As for the container, it is supposed to be wood. Probably for the reason you stated.

I was thinking the same thing about the Fire Dept.

Luckily I don't have any city ordinances to deal with.

I live about 3 blocks from the city limit.

Even though the wood would splinter and be almost as bad as metal.

I think if my powder blows Ill already not have a house, since I have propane everything in the house.

Well, IIRC here in cali it's 50lbs smokeless and 8lbs blackpowder. 800lbs you are referencing sounds like a commercial (read:firearms dealer) storage limitation.

Powder will not blow if it is stored in the original container, it will just burn really fast.

National Fire Code limits a person to 50lbs of smokeless powder in residence, stored in wooden box with minimum wall thickness of 1".
< 20lbs does not need wooden box.

If you're talking about storing in excess of 20# in a single container, you need to be talking to someone from the company that made the powder rather than us. Better yet, talk to someone at an Army munitions depot. Smokeless powders spontaneously offgas an aromatic nitride ester at a rate determined by the storage temperature. If the amount of powder stored is great enough, this gas can accumulate and convert to nitric acid, and the accumulation of nitric acid can lead to spontaneous combustion. This is why the army 'disposes' of all powders when of a certain age.

To the OP. Planning on having BATF search you home at random (which they can't do by the way)? Just buy the powder you need and store it in a cool dry place in your home. I can't think of a single noncommercial need where the volume of powder needed will exceed any legal statute.

Wood will burn before it transfers enough heat for the powder to ignite. The point where the crate/box burns through will vent the pressure.

Most places if they have an ordnance, law, or code will have adopted NFPA as there reference. Some have limited black powder to less than NFPA. Black powder is considered an explosive not a flamable.

Not planning on having any inspections, but if something were to happen I would not want my insurance to be able to with hold payment due to me not following a simple law.

No reason to take a chance is my theory.

I know commercially here in oklahoma is more restrictive than private.. 100# smokeless displayed and only 1# black powder.. balance to be in external approved magazine

If the powder all burns up in your house fire how do they weigh how much you had? Did an 8 pounder have 8#'s in it or 1#???? How do they know if that ball of melted plastic was a powder container or whether empty or full????
