First, I think they were made of stainless steel. And second, I always heard that the barres were screwed in. Rugers use an alloy receiver, even the stainless ones. Being alloy you can't hang a free floated barrel off them. I actually have an 80% finished 10/22 action that's SS. I plan on threading it when I get time. When I saw your post I figured I'd check to see if the threaded receiver story was true.

its real stainless isnt it. even rugers stainless isnt really stainless is it? im just asking, i dont know, but i heard they were stainless. they also make a sweet stainless pistol that is a copy of the mkII. they always fetch a good price. a guy here just got one for $230, the rifle that is.

My approach with the ten-deuce has been to bed the barrel, and screw the action down with the normal single screw to stabilize the receiver and the scope mount with it. I really don't believe floating the barrel buys you anything with the .22LR. I think the .22LR is different in a lot of ways from a bottlenecked C/F cartridge, and that some of the C/F issues simply don't apply.

didnt know that ! ya its stainless steel, i was told they started making them before rugar made their stainless ones ,i also heard that they are now out of business , ruger sued them for copying them. the stock attaches to the reciever by means of one screw at the front. the barrel definitely rubs along the stock. heres a pick of the barrel/reciever if it helps you?

none of my 4 10/22s have been free floated. all boyds and fajen laminates, none floated. i called boyds. they dont design the blaster or tacticool to be free floating. thats from them. now some might while others dont. or you can make it float. but ive never gone that far

i tried to look them up on the net, very little about the 10/22 copy but a good bit of info about the pistols. kind of cheeky alright blatently copying ruger!

I had one a few years ago,it was called the Small Game Hunter. It shot pretty well with the medium weight factory barrel.The action is stainless steel, not anodized aluminum like the Ruger stainless models.The receiver I had only took the crappy tip off scope rings, but it looks like you have a custom base on it. The barrel attached the same as a Ruger with the V block.

good to hear positive feedback about it camw. il get some groups posted up by the weekend and see how it shoots. its gona be my bunny basher and plinker,might enter a comp once in a blue moon for fun but really its just for the rabbits

I disagree, as do many competitors in the Sportsman's Team Challenge events.
I bed an inch or so in front of the receiver and everything forward of that floats. So you may not consider that free floated. It's a Douglas/ Clark .920 barrel 21 1/2" long and after 20 years still shoots under 1" @ 100yd on the rare day that's possible here and I'm inclined to bench it.
So far as I can tell, the receiver is doing just fine, as is that of my mentor's, which has run between 500 and 750K rd since he got it used 24 or so years ago with a .920 Douglas barrel. Often he hangs 12oz or more off the muzzle.
There are steel receivers available with integral rails; the factory one suits my needs nicely.
The only steel 10/22 Ruger ever made was the briefly produced 10/22 Magnum, withdrawn from production due to problems keeping them running without OOB discharges. If you look at the Magnum Research .22WMR, they port the barrel to bleed off gas to let the pressure curve sag to slow bolt opening to prevent blown cases even with in battery firing.
By all accounts the AMT product is a pretty good gun.

I have the AMT challenge edition. Stainless receiver, Shilen match barrel with match chamber that is screwed in, Jewell trigger, and McMillan stock. This rifle is silly accurate and has won me a few matches. I used to shoot rimfire BR years ago and had all of the top brand name components in the RF game. This is one rifle I will never part with.

The 'Lightning' was same specs as Ruger but had integral dovetail scope rail and was stainless instead of aluminum. They made a tapered sporter bbl, the "Target" model with heavy bull bbl and the folding stock with a 16.5" bbl. AMT was making stainless copies of the Ruger pistol which and the 10/22. The lawsuit was mainly about the pistol. Bill R dropped the suit with an agreement AMT would no longer make copies of his pistol but could manufacture SS rifles. They bought 10/22 bolts from Ruger!
My twin brother and I each have a Challenge Edition. He ordered his barreled action new and put into a Fajen laminate stock, I bought mine lightly used from a member here with McM thumbhole stock. Looked 10yrs for one and only seen 3 others for sale over the yrs but my finances and one for sale didn't come together for that long.lol Ours both have Shilen barrels, Jewell triggers etc like shooter65's. Ours both have Ruger type bolts.
They are one sweet shootin well built work of art. Visited with Sam Paredes who had the Custom Shop in his garage at first in Folsom,CA and in short time moved to Diamond Springs. Models with McM stocks were Challenge Edition I(18"-22" bbl), Challenge Edition II(with comp), The "Elite"(16.25" bbl with combo comp/bloop tube) Hunter Edition(with 18"-22" tapered bbl and sporter stock) and the "Flyswatter"(16.25" bull bbl in a Hogue stock) and a few 'custom custom' variations. Total of about 550ish guns total, brother has 500. Shilen made them custom 17 twist barrels but some also had 14, 15, 16 twist. They found the Shilen Ultra Match 17 tw was the main reason they could guarantee them to shoot .3 5 shot groups @ 50yds. Sam said many would shoot sub .2 and some were pretty consistent .1 shooters also.
The custom shop built rifles for Chevy Sportsman's Team Challenge, Rimfire Metallic Silhouette, BR50 etc. Most internal parts such as guide rod etc were all tool steel and bolts were purchased from Ruger. Factory triggers were hand fitted and set to 1.5-2#. Arnold Jewell made his 10/22 trigger in part because of the AMT custom shop and many of them were shipped with the Jewell trigger which was a $200 option in the mid 90's.
When Harry Sanford passed Galena Industries bought AMT from his widow and moved it to Sturgis, SD. The custom shop was renamed Diamond Precision Ind and no longer affliated with AMT or Galena. Olympic Arms made the SS receivers for them. Galena Ind only lasted about 2yrs in Sturgis before going tits up.
Sorry for the long ramble but thought anyone with an AMT 10/22 might find it interesting. My Challenge Edition would be one of the very last rifles I would ever sell.

I never got into every detail with Sam on all the particulars. As mentioned when Harry passed away and name was changed to Diamond Precision then receivers were made to spec for them by Olympic Arms. Never asked exactly how many rifles were made during this time but Sam indicated roughly 550 total. They closed in 98 after CA passed some firearms manufacturing laws that just would cost them more to comply with than they could justify/afford. Sad as Sam and Ron had some great ideas, superb machining skills and their attention to detail produced some super shooters. Guess there was an article in Precision Shooting in 97 or 98 about their guns but I have never read it. Would love it if someone could find the article and email it to me.

Shooter65 and SDWhirlwind, Thanks for the great writeups and pictures. I knew I had heard about screw-in barrels. If I get around to finishing my 80% stainless receiver I'll be screwing the barrel in.

A few years ago I shot one that had been converted to full auto. Very cool. Said the SS receiver would hold up to the F/A use better.

Thanks for the links shooter65. Does yours have the 3/8" grooved receiver or the Weaver type? I just assumed that the Weaver type was a feature of the Challenge Edition guns but mine and brothers are the only 2 I have actually handled and didn't pay attention to other pics I seen of for sale guns.
The 1 listed on GB is grooved like the Lightning models were so apparently apparently it was an option or choice? Also the GB gun with a factory trigger sure isn't a bargain at the starting price? Wouldn't mind having the one on Calguns but am not a member there and don't really need the scope or another 22 for that matter. Have a handfull of 40X's I don't shoot either.

Patents and copyrights expire, such items becoming part of the public domain. Patents, depending on their issue date (pre- or post-1995) can serve as intellectual property protection for either 17 or 20 years, and it takes an act of Congress to renew a patent. The Ruger 10/22 went into production in 1964. The patent probably expired somewhere around 1981.
My own preference is to declare many of my thoughts and ideas as public domain from the get-go. That's maybe all they're worth to begin with.

He doesn't know maker of stock etc etc. For a Midway barrel and no Jewell trigger and a 3/8" scope rail he is about $450 too high IMHO for a starting bid. About all he has to sell is a quality stainless receiver.
Some day I will find another, maybe trade a 40X for the right one. </div></div>

Found where he had it listed on GA sometime back and he wanted $1200 there. Contacted Russ Haydon and the one he had listed was sold some time back. That had the Jewell trigger and Weaver rail and was $795 so a better deal. Seems prices are pretty spread out when you consider all the spec differences?
