Does anyone have any first hand experience for these two devices? Any comparison would be greatly appreciated
The PVS 27 would sent in front of a Hensoldt 72mm.

Re: AN/PVS-27 & RAPTOR6X

Sure we use both extensively. If comparing a 6x Raptor vs. your day scope at 6x looking into a PVS-27, the dedicated NV Scope (Raptor) wins for a bit better clarity and light gathering ability.

After all, a dedicated NV rifle scope is built for this purpose where no "extra glass" is brought into the equation. In no way am I discounting the 27, but the Raptor edges a 27 out with a 6x to 6x comparison.

Now the beauty of course with the 27 is, the Raptor is a fixed 6x system where the PVS-27 with a high end day scope can get up to 12x and still have a great image in rural areas. Higher magnification in rural areas no moon will require active IR at extended ranges and smaller targets.

Hope this helps.

The only thing that's not cool about the 27 is the front heavy weapon you will have. If your in a stationary position not a big deal.

It would be interesting to see the picture behind the 72mm. In front of a NXS 5.5-22x and with moonlight 18x is usable, at least out to 1200yds.

Re: AN/PVS-27 & RAPTOR6X

I don't think you will see a huge difference in performance with the 72mm vs any other decent scope with >40mm Obj.

Remember that with the 22/27 setups, you are basically looking at a TV image about 1" in front of your scope. Most of the image quality is limited to the lp/mm of the screen, how much down range light is available or the range of your I.R.illuminator.

The screen brightness of these units is more than plenty for most good scopes. The resolution and contrast of the unit will make or break the deal.

Even under the best conditions with good light, we have not been able to run above about 8x with the PVS-22 and about 12x with the PVS-27. Attempting to do so for more than a few seconds of viewing usually leads to the user wanting to claw their eyes out

Even under the most ideal conditions and better glass, we could not have a view that is realistically usable on an actual target anywhere near 1200 yds.

Have you actually been able to identify and aim at a silhouette or smaller target at 1200yds with this setup?

Re: AN/PVS-27 & RAPTOR6X

I've been pretty successful with a PVS-26 / S&B 5-25 setup at 1000 on a standard IPSC target, but that's ideal conditions using a DBAL-A2 for illumination. 10 to 12 power is about max usable mag and the view is not as good as the worst 10x daytime scope you might see. Can you shoot at 1200? You might be at say 25% of your daylight capability, if that. These things will work VERY well at 400-600 and less, which is the the real intent anyway. You pretty much own everything inside 500, given any decent IR illum unit, like Victor's Torch.

The biggest advantage to the clip-on system is portability. I can use the 26 on every one of my rifles, from the Barrett to the 6.5G, you just need some mounting rail. A Raptor makes a dedicated system.

Re: AN/PVS-27 & RAPTOR6X

I am basing my observation off a full moon over clear fields. I could identify/silhouette deer or pig at 1000-1200yds. I considered this to be the best case scenario I tried. I had engaged some 800 yd steel with say 70% success.

No live targets tried at anything over 500 yds (illegal to hunt with NV). I would consider 1000yd + shot with a peq2a.

When the magnification gets high you can start to see very small grid like dots from the unit. The parallax combined with the NV unit focus will definitely drive you crazy. Trying to get more out of the system than it is capable.

Are all the PVS-27 systems from OTSI?

Yes.

Re: AN/PVS-27 & RAPTOR6X

This is my opinion on the Dedicated Night Vision Weapons Sight (DNVWS) vs the Clip on Night Sight for Image quality debate.

Ok I think the DNVWS "look" better for one reason. The viewed image on just about EVERY DNVWS is larger that the viewed image through even the best Day Optics. Now I know that sounds simplistic but, it has been my experience that people like looking at larger images. I have a pair of Leica GeoVids with the Laser Range Finder in them. They are a $2300.00 plus pair of Binos. They are damn good glass. Now I also have a pair of Zeiss Binos that are the same power and objective size and everyone who looks through the Zeiss says they are a VERY nice pair of Binoculars. Then they look through the Leicas and the EWWWWs and the AHHHHs start with out FAIL.

Now setting both pairs up on a tripod I can still read the same street signs at the same distance with little if any difference in image quality. To a person, everyone loves those Leicas though. I think it is because the Leicas have a MUCH larger eyepiece and it is easier to see into the Binos. Think about it this way do ya wanna watch TV on a 37 inch or a 55 inch screen?

My Gen 3 PVS-4 looks incredible when compared to my PVS-24 and ACOG combo which is good glass around. But the Larger image size is preferable. Remember the PVS-4 Gen 3 is only a 45 LPM tube and the PVS 24 is an 64 line OMEGA tube with very high specs.

NOW that being said I still prefer the versatility of the clip on/day sight combo, that is just me.
