Gonna fill my deer tags in the mountains this year, so I was looking for a thicket gun. I have several to choose from , but want something very light. Was thinking of buying a model 7 or T3 light, but figured I could put something together. I built my girls a rifle a couple years ago and figured that one was more than light enough.
This rifle is started out as a 7x57 VZ 12/33 Mauser, imported by JLD a while back and a few ended up with Larry Eisel out of NY ( http://www.eiselarmory.com/index.htm ). I have 3 of them and decided to sport one. At $99 a pop, they are more relics than anything, but the receivers are still workable. The others are in storage and a wall hanger.
Picked up a 19.5" reconditioned barrel from Numrich Product No. 955300. Thing is nice, slugs tight around 285.
Added a Lyman 57 SME and a Williams streamline and fire site system. Also a Bold optima 98 with side safety, and a Remington Aluminum butt plate.
I originally had it in an old VZ24 stock and lop was set to 12.5 for my girls. I thought to try the Boyds stock from my Turk Sporter and it looked and balanced great.
After restocking it I noticed it looked alot like the Ruger Gunsite scout. Figured I would go with that theme, and added a Clifton XS scout ramp.
All in all it I am very happy with the result. I have a rifle with great ballistics (7x57), weighs 7 lbs, 39.5 oal, and can be loaded with stripper clips. And groups around an inch (with irons)
Next, I have a hinged floorplate on order from Numrich and will add a Burris or Leupy scout scope.
