And you thought the ammo price gouging is bad!

I will bet all of this is folks jumping on the "Buy your power from us, it's cheaper." I get at least on of those a week here.

These small "power" companies are like hedge funds in my view. They are buying surplus power on the spot market and selling it to consumers. How that really works when all the wires are the same I have no idea.

Bottom line, there is now no surplus power so the spot price for what is available is through the roof. Hence the huge bills. As Heinlein said TANSTAAFL...

Its like the smaller cell phone companies. They rent the infrastructure from the big companies so they don't support a workforce so to speak or hardware. That all falls upon whatever company they lease it from.

We have a contract with our power provider at a set $ per kWH. This ”Griddy” company is literally the Costco of electricity providers. They charge a flat monthly rate and then sell power to their customers at the raw wholesale price.

Blah, blah, blah, invisible hand of “what the fuck did you think was going to happen?”

They took the deal from this other power company knowing something like this could happen. It's like walking into a Vegas Casino and slapping your life savings down at the Roulette Table and then when you lose you claim it was unfair, ask for a government handout, and call your local news station.

Simply supply and demand.

Right? I see everyone talking about the thousands and millions without power while these people have power but are complaining about the price. They could literally... turn off their own power. But they're not.

If they think they're going to have someone come in and save them by paying their bill for them -- I think they're in for a very rude awakening. That'd be less popular than paying off peoples student loans. I can only imagine how pissed people in Texas who spent days or weeks without power would be if their tax dollars were used to pay off those bills.

It's also just weird to me... I mean, I live in Arkansas -- my whole life we've gotten more ice than snow so I'm used to seeing days/weeks without power. Maybe it's just a rural life thing that I think this way -- but WTF is wrong with these people that they're not prepared to live without electricity?

Texans or not, this is just proof of how inept and dependent city dwellers (most of them anyway) are. I think if these major cities, even those in right-leaning Texas, were to find themselves unable to get resources brought in to them... I really think the vast majority of those people couldn't survive on their own. What kind of way is that to live? Damn, I'm in whiny rant mode today...

To be fair, you have to admit that if you live in a big apt complex its just not practical for everybody to have their own generator. Extra food, and maybe a Little or Tough Buddy for heat, yes, and inexcusable not having those.

Personally, I couldnt live in an apt/condo/townhome anyway. I tried it for 6 months once and at the end of my lease I was ready to go ballistic from just being so close to so many other people 24/7. I had to go down to the Virginia Beach/Portsmouth area the other day and was ready to pop by the time I left, from the FUCKING traffic. Like you, I wonder how folks live like that, but many wouldnt trade it because of the convenience, no yard to take care of, no trim to paint, etc.

If the power went out and stayed out, within a year 70-90% of the country would be dead.
I think thats a bit high. 30% in the inner cities dead, 40% sucking the government tit even more than now. The balance having seen the future and planned for it would be stressed but surviving to one degree or another.

It would be interesting to watch the inner cities eat themselves and each other. The strongest would venture out to the burbs and steal, rape and pillage, until they reached the countryside, where they would get dead.

There is 1 here in Virginia that's called Southside electric co op. They had something like 24,000 customers out from this past weekends storm. I dont know what their total is now with this latest storm on top of that. But people are getting pissed.

no trucks running, no food deliveries, no power, no water, no fuel. If you don’t have a farm with livestock, a well, a wood burning fireplace, a bunch of guns, and bodies to help you are dead.

THats shameful. Theyre out towards Richmond which didnt even get hit hard, just lack or preparation. We get ours from Rappahannock Co Op where we got a lot more ice and I dont think many lost power for long. They have crews out all spring, summer and fall, clearing brush and trees for just that reason.

Kind of like San Antonio where my buddy lives now. They got 8+ inches of snow and not a plow to be had. I can just imagine what its going to be like when the melt starts. From freeze to flood over night.
