Hiya.
I'm an ex-Brit and ex-South African, now US citizen living in N Dallas, TX - I spent time in the old SADF during the bush-war days, did some PSD contracting in Iraq, etc. I consider myself more than competent with most small-arms, having competed in IPSC, Steel, Skeet, etc, etc - but I'd never really had an opportunity to do any actual precision rifle shooting until a few years ago.
That flaw in my character had to be corrected, of course but I didn't want to throw myself into thousands of dollars worth of gear before I learned the fundamentals - so about 3 years ago I bought an inexpensive (yet accurate) Savage 10T .308, an EGW 20 MOA rail and (stupidly) some cheap glass (Redfield Battlezone 3-9x42). That glass didn't stay long and I upgraded to a Vortex 4-16x50 SFP in Mils (my first foray into milrads, which I much prefer) and have learned how to range pretty accurately with it.
I successfully made good hits on 12x24 steel at 500 and 700 yards on a friend's farm despite some raggedy wind, so I've been reading/teaching myself to eyeball the wind (and back it up with a small anemometer for confirmation). I found it difficult to accurately judge how much windage I was holding off as Vortex reticle is very bare, so a few days ago I ordered an Arken SH4 6-24x50 gen 2 with the christmas-tree style reticle (should arrive in a few weeks).
I handload most of my ammo, and the .308 is using a 175 SMK over IMR 4895 or Varget.
