About a month ago Jeff invited me down to shoot 1,000yds with him. Quite intimidating to say the least; like playing a few games of HORSE with a NBA All-Star.
Gobs of fun and learned a lot, including that my wind reading abilities are still horrible. Sorry, no pics but basically my groups were magnitudes larger in vertical and horizontal than his. I did manage to never actually hit the target (~10"x10"), just the cardboard around it....quite impressive I think, lol!
I have been wanting to try Lapua brass for awhile now but never made the leap...been using Win. Well Jeff sold me some of is old, multiple fired brass so I could try it out. I feel less guilty running used Lapua through my reloading "process" than virgin brass. He has been giving me tips on how to get these Berger Hybrids shooting well, I think he told me too much this last trip out ;-)
Fast forward a month. Been out of town for three weeks, stayed up all Friday night to work up some loads to try out a few things and had get my crap ready.
Some limb trimming and brush reorganizing was required but I now have a spot to shoot 350yds at the farm I have been going to, will have to use the weed-wacker next time out as the grass will be taller. Have to shoot out of my 4runner but I can work around that. Just nice to get more distance to check vertical.
I have been fighting a flier problem (flier correlates to high/low fps) so I made a few win test batches as well as groups for node testing with Lapua. Findings are (for me) lot & weight sorting Win brass does not help, except to cull the extreme heavy/light cases. I also thought I was on to something by sorting Win brass by the height of the "hump" inside the case around the flash hole. No difference there either.
I did find a significant difference between my tuned Ohaus 10-10 and GemPro 250. The last step was brass.
And the winner is........LAPUA!!
Scope on 42x
350yds, 5 shots, winds <5mph; don't know if the mirage caused the two water levels or loose nut behind gun. Now that I found my node, I will load up more than just 5 to test.
Thanks again Jeff for all of the help!!
