I have never owned anything other than pistols and an old .22 Remington. Recently decided I wanted a long range rifle.
I'm heavily involved in 4wheeling and frickin hate dumb ass newbs asking questions that have been answered 1000 times SO.... rather than ask, I've spent the last several months reading. Here, snipercentral, accurateshooter, etc. digesting as much as I could. Then I went to one of the sergeants I work with and he recommended a well regarded local gun smith. I sat down with him and ironed out a plan. (long term build on a tight budget)!

Bought a Remington 700 SPS 26" varmint barrel chambered in .243
(I'm not reinventing the wheel)
Had my smith scrap the crap-mark pro trigger.. He brought out a big box and built me and "old style" trigger out of parts. Trigger breaks like glass at 2#.
Scored a Leupold Mark 6-18x40 scope.

Nothing special really, but I'm a form follows function/ anti gear queer kinda guy.

Build plans are a B&C medalist stock, rechamber to .260, AI removeable mag kit, krieger barrel, bedded, trued and all that happy jazz shit.

Not looking to win any paper punching comps, (although the 24 hour sniper challenge is what got me interested in all this) I just want to build a solid gun that can ride in the back of my patrol car and take care of business when needed.

MadCountyDep,

First of all, welcome to the Hide. You will not find a better bunch of guys to hang out with on any forum. Excellent choice on the Rem. 700 platform. The sky is the limit as far as options. Just installed a PT&G bottom metal in my B&C Light Tactical and coundn't be happier. Fit and function is perfect. Dave is going to turn the bottom metal world upside down with this product and pricing(129.00). Looks like you definitely need to flute the bolt. Just kidding. There is a wealth of knowledge on this forum. Enjoy.

Regards, Paul.

Re: Another..... New guy

Welcome MadCountyDep!

I think you are on the right path with your build. However, I'll just make one recommendation - try to get to see/feel/hold/fondle some other rigs before going any further. Nothing against B&C, I had one for a while and it shot well. But once you add in the cost of the DBM, inletting the stock, skim bedding the action and DBM, you are getting close to the price of some of the chassis systems that are available. This includes the Manners mini-chassis that keeps the traditional stock look and feel if that is what you like.

Give it a real hard look. The cost may be closer than you think, especially if you are not doing the bedding yourself.

I took the long route of getting a B&C stock first then getting a chassis system. No doubt I lost money on that path.

Have fun and good shooting!

Re: Another..... New guy

Thanks for the welcome guys. I actually prefer the look of some chassis. The AICS is cool, but I've also been looking at the XLR and the JAE-700. All of those to my understanding would negate the need for bedding and pillars if I understand correctly. ?

Re: Another..... New guy

well, now that I've been reading for months now and shooting as much as i can afford, I'm realizing i need to start reloading and switch my scope...I've got my scope listed locally for less than i paid for it

i know i need 100 posts to sell in the classified, . but my style is to read and search which almost always negates me making redundant posts asking newbie questions...
