I posted on another tread about the bolt problem on this rifle but now I have another question.

My friend took the stock off this rifle (Rem 700 223 BDL, think it is a SPS model) There is a small rectangle piece of metal that fell out when he took the stock off. I don't remember ever seeing anything like this on my 308. Seems to fit in the mag well but not for sure.

Anyone have any ideas??

Just got off the phone with the owner, he seems to think this piece fell out from between the magwell metal and the trigger. But for the life of me I can't see how it would fit in there.

For some reason I still think it fits somewhere in the magwell.

Happened to me first time I bought a Rem 700 and concerned me. No problem, it is actually the body of the magazine itself and just wedges itself up into there. Some fit snugger than others.

Find the round notch corner, it fits beneath the barrel of the action -- the curved notch mates up with the end of the barrel but is hard to see it, you have to feel it. Push the body back up into the action, jiggled it a bit until it feels seated, hold it in place and insert the follower and spring into the body. There is also a schematic in your owners guide which shows the correct positioning of the piece.

I agree, it's kind of a crummy way to fashion it, but I guess it makes it more customizable later

I went on Remington's website, pull up the schematic's for the 700, so far I am not seeing the piece on any of the pictrues they are shoowing.

Its measurements are
13/16" x 1 1/8" x 7/16"
It is made from a stamped piece of steel, hoolow in the middle.
