Rifle Scopes another set ?'s for scope mounting

looking around at scope bases, they all seem to be one piece. are the one pieces better than the 2 pieces?

what makes the high dollar rings better than the ones i can get at dicks?

i have seen some with recoil lugs. can someone please elaborate?

i only plan on reaching out 300 yds for now, so do i need a 20 MOA base? i really do not have time, money, or area to train to be a 1000 yd shooter. i am just being realistic with myself.

not sure of the scope yet. i am thinking nikon monarch. that will be another day.

the rifle is a 5R 308 20"er. it should be here today. i do plan on suppressing it, hopefully i can scratch up the funds and start the paper work next week.

i know these seem like simple mundane questions, but hey, you didn't know this stuff when you started.

any comments are welcome, and thanks for the help on my other threads.

I don't claim to be a pro on some of this but i will try and help

1) i would naturally and logically think a one piece base is more uniform and straight ect... than two piece base... it is after all two pieces. just my thoughts on that.

2) high dollar rings are made from light durable materials to cut weight but be rugged. they often use nicer screws than the ones at dicks which use phillips or flat. They are also mil spec and are cut more precise and uniform. and the final ingredient is brand name so they tac just a little extra on for that.

(some people like the burris xtreme tactical rings, reasonable price and rugged if you don't want to dump over $100 for seekin rings but you get what you pay for there, but for what you are doing they would be more than fine)

With a .308 out to 300yrds you would not need a 20MOA base, but this also has to do with your optics, are you going to have tactical turrets? what is the travel on the turrets? not overly familar with nikon monarch, i think it has tac turrets and would have plenty of adjustment to keep you zero'ed out to at least 600yrds i could be wrong

i am holding off on the scope for now. since the suppressor takes so long, i am putting my scope money towards that. after i sell some more of my motorcycle racing crap, then i'll get a scope. i have a nikon prostaff on my '06 that i am going to take off to tinker with the new 5R.

as far as turrets, reticles, travel, MOA, MIL, and all that fun stuff, i have no idea. high end scopes are new to me.

since rings and bases are cheaper, i am going to get those first. but i want to get the info on the rings and bases, pick a scope, then start the slow process of saving money and selling stuff.

if someone bought my bike tomorrow, then i'd be all set!!!

my thoughts are the same as yours on the base. i just wanted to clarify.

A one piece base also makes the action more rigid.

I've got a set of those Burris Rings, and they're ok. But, they aren't as good as the TPS rings I put on my 5R. The TPS rings weren't that much more expensive either.

Good luck with the bike sell. Had to sell mine after I killed a deer with it. Road rash sucks.

damn!!! i came close a few times to hitting deer. the one race class i took, a guy got killed at summit point in WV not too long before that. if i remember correctly, a deer made its way onto the straight away during a wera, or ccs race. the instructor told us to "aim for the soft spot, and tuck in".

so what are to companies i should look into for bases and rings?

An EGW 20 MOA base and TPS rings are probably going to be the most common answer.

I have both of those (aluminum, steel would probably be better for hard use as it would be more solid) and they work fine.

I did read once somewhere you want to metals to match so they can expand and contract together, although I'm not sure how true this is I thought it made enough sense to keep the metal consistent.

im probably going to stick with stainless steel. the one web site said the SS were 4.99oz, and the titaniums were 2.79. 2.2oz isn't that much. plus, the Ti's were $65 more.

I've heard a lot of good things about Seekins. They're not the cheapest, but they're not the most expensive. Heard a gunsmith say that of the couple of optics he's unmounted with Seekins, he's seen no ring rash. That's probably not the normal case, but he says they a VERY precisely made rings. I'm sure others can chime in. I'm still a newb so I can't comment too much, but I figured I'd just pass along the knowledge I've heard from other shooters. My Seekins rings JUST arrived via UPS from SWFA about 30 minutes ago.
