Ok...I received my new Weaver Tactical 4-20X scope today and thought I would share my thoughts on it in case anyone is interested and/or are thinking about buying one.

I will be using this on a med. range AR-15 platform (20" barrel) and just for punching paper and maybe some static varmint hunting. So I wanted a good scope but not one that would break the bank.

I also have a couple of other scopes to compare it to and have included those as well.

All pics are taken from inside my house...and through a window at the neighbors house at 80 yrds distance...as I am not able to make it to the range so keep that in mind. I will do a follow up when it dries up around here and I am able to get out with it.

So...lets start with the good. Glass is surprisingly good. Clear and bright. Better then the Bushnell Elite 6500 but not quite as crisp as the NF NXS 5.5-22X. As others have mentioned it is on par with the Leupold MK 4's I have owned.
Build quality seems good. It has a good solid feel to it. The matt finish is nice...a dark charcoal gray.
Focus knob is very smooth and tracks well. The power adjustment is a bit stiff but about the same as my NF. The Bushnell is very smooth compared to them.

Now the things I am not keen on....it came with no lens covers, or sunshade. I ordered one (sunshade) with it and was told it would match...it was for the Super Slam line. Nope...not even close....so until they come out with one for the Tactical line I will be running it sans a sunshade.
The target knobs are "ok"...the design is not what I would want if I was actually using it for a work rifle. You have to lift the knob up to be able to turn it. And it is "wobbly" in that position so I would not feel comfortable leaving them like that.
Next is there are no numbers on adjustment hash marks. So say you have a 100 yard zero and go to 400 yards...you have no reference to come back down to 100 yards. See pic for what I am talking about.

So thats about it for now. Again...once I am able to actually get out and shoot with it this is where my review ends.

Here are the pics.

Take care,Stan

Better than an almost $1000 6500 by evaluating through a window.
This is a joke right?

Yeah...the grid in the window was in view of the NF I noticed after taking the pics.

I was just looking through the NF and the Weaver as it is getting dark and I must say they are pretty close in low light cond.

I think what he was trying to say(tho not very articulately) was that to compare ANYTHING thru a glass window is silly and pointless, the quality of the glass window then becomes an image distortion factor. I agree. Really appreciate your efforts but when you get a chance, take them outside and do the same thing, the difference should be apparent. -MaxPower

BTW- did you measure the total elevation adjustment of the Weaver? Inquiring minds wanna know...

Iknow, I was wondering about the consistancy from individual product to product.

Well not to sound like a asshole...but I have owned the Elite 6500 4.5-30. And I was VERY disappointed in it. At 30X you could not see bullet holes on paper past 200. Very poor clarity and resolution.
I do like the 2.5-16X 6500's...again I own three of them...and for $550.00 they are a good hunting scope...and thats what I use them for.

I do not discuss or argue about things I do not have first hand knowledge of.

Oh...and again...if you paid/pay over $700.00 for ANY of the 6500 line your getting gouged.

Here is some more links for better deals on the 4-30X 6500...I paid $575.00 for the one I bought...

Below is the rifle (Savage) I put together using the Bushy 4.5-30. I returned the Bushy three days after buying and replaced it with a NF bench rest model. Then sold the Savage and had a custom BR rifle made.

I am not saying the Weaver is the best thing since sliced bread...but for a $600.00 scope it is decent. If it had better target knobs then I would rate it a good to very good scope for the money. Being right after Christmas I just don't have the $1500+ for another NF right now or thats what the new AR would be sporting.
Once I get a chance to play with the Weaver more and shoot behind it I will decide to keep it or not and will post my feelings on then.

Take care,Stan

Thanks for the review. People will cry about the "through the window" stuff, but I applaud the effort and always like to see the reticles first hand. The glass is subjective, so it doesn't matter if there is another window in the way.

Thanks for taking the time to put it together. Be sure to follow up and let us know how it functions afield.

I don't think I would say a market place shift. FFP sales compared to SFP would not be close in the general market. Maybe Weaver decided to listen to what Some people wanted, And think they can make some money in the process.
