Anschutz 64 MPR ejection issue

Today I took my brand new Anschutz 64 MPR to the range for the first time. This rifle is very well built in every way. The action is very smooth, the stock feels really good and solid. Every part fits together like they hand fitted. The accuracy is also very good, and just like I expected it to be. I now understand why the cost compared to other .22s.

I only have one thing to bitch about, and it's the poor ejection of the spent cases. I'm sure it is something simple and not comon on Anschutz rifles, but non the less, very disappointing after paying what I did for it.

I used Wolf target and extra ammo only. I fired about 200 rounds through it, and never got any better. It looks like it ejects, but it's actually dropping the spent case in the raceway, and the forward movement of the bolt pushes the spent case out most of the time. Sometimes it just jams the bolt.

I would like to know if any of the many that own this rifle have had this issue, and if so what did you do to get it to stop/fixed. Thanks

For my part I'm also shooting a 64 MPR that had the same problem until I shot 700 or so rounds. The rifle seems to have fixed itself and now ejects perfectly without any intervention from me. Don't know what what changed; perhaps simple wear.

You're right; very accurate rifle. I shot 3 position smallbore with an Anschutz free rifle in the 60s and have loved them ever since.

I had the same issue with mine also.
I took a very stiff short brush like a tooth brush and cleaned the bolt head very well. i didn't remove any parts just cleaned the grease out.
It worked better then after a few boxes of shells ran well some issues not like when new.

You got it before I did. Thanks. I was going to do this mod but never got to it since my rifle seems to have fixed itself. I'm sure Gil will appreciate the info. As others have posted cleaning/degreasing AND a bunch of rounds may do the same. Never had this problem with my free rifle.

STR & Speeddog, all is well. i was looking to add a Anni to my Cooper 57M in 22lr and was reading all about them on Rimfirecentral.com & I could not believe that there was an extraction issue. To me Germain engineering is some of the best in the world. Ok, I really LOVE Porsche's but I can only afford a picture. Anyhow, I still may add one and just give it to Sean of CDI Knife & Gun in Bucks County Pa. and just say, YOU fix it & let me know when it works.

I also saw a really neat stock for Anni's posted on Rimfirecentral which was for a 64. I wish I had known I was going to post as I would have posted the link too.

I wanted to share two things I discovered once I took the bolt apart to look at the extractor and case retainer on the left side. The first was that someone had already tried to fix this issue on this rifle. They had used a file to modify both the extractor, and the retainer. It was rough with burrs on the retainer that kept the retainer from operating smoothly in the slot it rides in. The extractor was filed at an angle on the point which fits over the case rim. It just plain looked like crap. I bought this rifle new from Champion Shooters Supply, and I don't blame them nor Anschutz, because I'm sure they weren't aware of it. I have to assume that this rifle was sold, worked on by some wanna be, and returned it without the true reason as to why they returned it. It looked brand new, so it was re sold as brand new. All of that can not be proven, but it's the only way I can exclude Champion, and Anschutz from any willful wrong doing.

Second thing is that I took the retaining clip off and took some measurement after deburring the ugly file marks, and thought I might want to reassemble the bolt for a try before I futher messed it up. Once assembled I noticed that both the extractor and case retainer could be pushed forward after the retaining clip had pressure on them. Doing this created a bigger space between the claw on the extactor and the bolt face. Now there was a lot less tension on the case. I loaded a mag, and cycled the bolt, and wouldn't you know it, they all ejected out and back as they should into one neat pile. I then pushed both the extractor and retainer back as far as they would go under the retaining clip, and tried it again. The results were that the rifle would fail to eject the cases properly. In short, if this happens to you with a model 64, try pushing the extractor and retainer forward first before filing anything. I'm not saying that some might not this filing on the parts proccedure, but it's easier to try this first.

I'm going to still call and order factory new parts considering they are not expensive, and try it with those. Just thought you all with Model 64 actions might want to know.

It's very possible. Just like one is working just fine and starts to eject poorly, you could check this first. Anschutz should look at this, and maybe cut slots instead of a hole that lets these parts slide back and forth.

The extraction problem with the 64 action does not exist according to Anschutz. Mine extracts perfectly after doing the mods to both extractors.

Champions shooters supply shows to have a couple of the 1416 HB's with that stock from the factory. I almost bought one of them but went with the straight 64 instead. They stated that they had some of the first ones to come into the states so far as a complete gun. Don't know if they sell the stock by itself though. Look to be nice guns. Would be much better off buying the whole gun then just buying a 64 and then the stock from prices I have seen.

Speeddog, I looked on the Anschutz web page & I think it was there. I'll have to go back & see if I can find the exact page and copy a link for you. My only guess is that Champion could import it for you as they are a dealer. What makes it so appealing to me is the adjustable cheek rest. With my Cooper 57M it is a little challenging to get behind the scope perfectly. That is opposed to my Accuracy International where it is as natural as drinking a beer with a taste of Jack. Well, I hope you get my drift.....

Maxwell, thanks for the reply. I too found the stock on the Anschutz web site but wasn't clear how well it would fit the mpr. I got my rifle from Champions; I guess the next move would be to call them as you suggested. The stock/rifle was not on their website last night when I looked. Will see what they have to say.

With MPR 64, when shooting Wolf, Extra or Target, several ejection issues but none with RWS.

Maybe the modification was done at the factory, but strange it is done in such a rough way.
Anschutz is still one of the few manufacturers that manually matches the bolt to the action.
Look at the bolt face there should be a 3 figure number matching the last 3 numbers of the serial number of the rifle.
If there is no number it is a repair, if the number doesn't match you may have a problem.

I recently purchased the MPR 64 and was really bummed about the spent cartridge ejection. I took the rifle to the range gunsmith and he worked with it a little. He did not take the bolt apart. Anyway, the rifle was not improved and it would just continue to fail to eject.

I did take the ejector out and measure the base. Seems like it was .090 inch. I took a jewelers file and took .002 inch off and polished with a diamond hone.

Went back to the range and there was some slight improvement. Went back and took the ejector out and took another .002 inch off and polished and put it all back together. Had it at the range yesterday and ran 60 rounds total and had three or four failures to eject properly.

I am going to leave it alone at this point and send some more rounds down range and see if the remaining bugs work themselves out.

It still grips the loaded cartridge with quite a bit more force than either my CZ 452 or Ruger M77-22. The bolts on those rifles are very similar and both of those rifles do not grip a loaded round as tightly as the Anschutz. I am really impressed with the accuracy of the rifle. I did put more pressure on the trigger as it was just too light for me. I may put a little more in it to get it where I want it. Other than the issue with ejection, the rifle is amazing.

I thought I would try different ammo before doing any modifying on the factory parts. I shot some Eley target, and Eley Club with no extraction issues. It shot this ammo very well, but it does better with Wolf extra. I guess I will shoot the Eley ammo until I have time to fix the factory problem. Still bothers me that I have to fix something on a brand new factory .22 in the $1100.00 price range. I guess when you're as big as Anschutz is in the industry, you don't have to worry about one flaw in one model rifle when it's only one in a few. Just thought others might want to know that other ammo might work without modification.

The eley has worked well in mine also. I don't get any fte from any eley. Toss in some wolf/skd or other and I get about 1/3-4 fte. If I shoot some eley before it, the fte's go down.

A new 1712 had a bolt machined by a Rabid Beaver. The face was gouged and was obviously reformed poorly. It was returned after the seller said Anschutz would not replace the bolt and put matching numbers on it. The second 1712, from a different vendor was much better but not perfect. My old 64 Match needed filing to eject properly, a rifle from the late sixties. An issue that still exists offset by amazing accuracy. With Anschutz the juice is worth the squeeze.
