Hunting & Fishing antelope hunt

The years of labor have left my Dad unable to handle any type of cold weather. For an avid deer hunter this is devestating.
I am looking into the idea of taking him and my son on a hunt/camping trip where it doesnt get below freezing. We have a pull camper and were thinking of just camping and hunting,hopefully a few p dogs in the mix.

Anyone have suggestions for a first time Antelope easterner?

Find an area in Wyoming that's open in September. Even an early October shouldn't be too bad. You can get a bunch of additional antelope tags and have a party!

lots of state and BLM land.

only have till March 15th to apply for this fall in WY....

I dont know how to get ahold of them at the moment. But Tommy Moore at the Moore ranch north of Edgerton and Midwest has an awsome outfitters. I got a antelope with 17 inch horns and 7 inch cutters. Definatly alot funner than sit in a stand and wait. Plus if you get your kill early you can kill prarie dogs until you run out of ammo.

We dont have near as many as wyoming and sendero man, but if you wanted to up your chances and put in for an Idaho tag I could find you some. Shot my first one last fall, it was a blast.

I threw my name in the draw for the area near Medicine Bow. I can't wait util I get the results this summer. It had a 100% draw rate last year, so I'm hoping for good news.

What does it cost for an out of stater to get a tag up there??? Just by draw I guess. No huge price for a tag???

Damn I was looking at some of the Elk on the quarterminutemagnum site. Unbelievable monster Elk. Antelope are bigger than our Texas lopes too.

I know the wildlife population has thinned in Idaho and elsewhere...is the hunting better in Wyoming and Montana?

I really have to get up there...or else go to Alaska.

Cost isnt an issue, its beating the odds and getting a tag

. I just looked and an antelope tag to get the license put in and draw one would be like 460 ish. As for the population thinning in Idaho, its completely dependent on where you are. There is plenty of game in all species you just have to know where to look and want to go get it. As for elk, I know where there are some toads. Problem is I cant draw a tag myself!

Jon - Hope this works for you guys. I have been in the area enough (but never hunted) to know that there is a lot of antelope and with the help of a local hunter, it should be a good hunt if you can get permits.

theres really no need for an outfitter for goats if your just looking for some meat. there is plenty of public land here to find them on.we took 3 goats on public land south of gillette and my boy took one on a ranch and they all taste the same.really the damn things are like rats around here and like i said theres lots of public places to hunt them.just pic an area off the map and start looking for blm land.area 17 north of gillette is good as well as 22,23,26,yea there is alot of private land but pleny of public it just depends on what your looking for.hell for a fellow hide member get a tag for area 23 and i will take you out and put you on a goat how far would you like to shoot..

Jon,

The Wyoming crew here on the hide are right on with their advice. You and your group will have a blast. I have been hunting WY since 1993 all you need to do is pick a good area, one with good antelope and a reasonable amount of public land. Put in for the draw (ends March 15th) then if you draw the tag, get the necessary maps BLM, USFS, etc. and have at it. Good luck.

How do you know the better areas when you are going in blind?

Jon,

To be honest without points you won't stand a chance of drawing in the best areas(red desert),chances there are around 3%. However, there are a ton of antelope in WY, so here are some options. The NE section has a bunch of antelope and most areas have left-over tags after the draw. These areas are mostly private land therefore, you will most likely have to pay a trespass fee to the landowner. The trespass fee can/will vary from landowner to landowner. I will admit the last time I paid a trespass fee was back in 1998 around Douglas,WY and at that time the ranch we hunted on charged $150/gun.

I usually just hunt on BLM land, there are several good areas around Casper, WY that have good amounts of public land(BLM).You could call the Casper office (307)473-3400 and speak to one of their biologist they are usually very helpful. You might also call the Laramie office (307)745-4046 and do the same. Just tell them what you are trying to do, hopefully they can give you some direct pointers. Hope this will give you a starting point.

Not to hijack, but what the hell is a trespass fee? In Idaho, you trespass you go to court and it goes on your record, along with you doing community service or something. In WY, is it just you get caught cough up some dough and we will forget about it?

Yea Idahoshooter,

I agree trespass fee sounded funny the first time someone mentioned it to me, but that's what they call it in WY.

The $150/gun might be outdated somewhat, but you can still find good areas for a reasonable fee. I currently hunt deer on private property in WY for $250/gun and for however many days I choose to hunt. But I wouldn't doubt if some landowners charge double that amount in some areas.

As far as antelope hunting I found an area back in 2004(BLM)land, that is still open when we are up that way during our annual deer hunt. I have hunted this area four times since then and I have harvested four nice goats out of there. This area actually has tags that you can buy over-the-counter, due to the fact that there are still tags remaining after the left-over drawing.

The only negative aspect of my honey-hole is having to pack out the goat on a frame, but the lack of roads/two-tracks is why I always find goats in that spot.

Nice goats jimbo. Both those fees are dirt cheap. My family doesnt sell goat tags, only elk and deer, but they are sold for wayyy more than 250 a gun. Shoot, id pay 250 a gun to drive to wyoming and shoot one, thats cheap in the grand scheme of things!

The $250/gun trespass fee that I mentioned is only for the access to a particular landowners property. It does not include the tag, the hunter must obtain it in the draw. I'm guessing, what you are mentioning that your family sells are landowner tags.

Yea, antelope is pretty good table fare, just as long as you marinate it for 24 hours prior to throwing it on the grill wrapped in bacon.
