Any 16-19" shorty 6.5 Creedmoor or 260rems out there?

.260rem...Finished at 19". It was a 24" but I've been wanting to cut it down ever since I got rid of my 20" Savage 308. Looking at this thread, and the other "shorty" threads pushed me over the edge. Lol! Lots of awesome rifles here!!

Sorry for the crappy cell pic!...

Thanks!...Its a Rem varmint contour, 1:8 Krieger. Installed a Jewell trigger (set at 2lbs), when I had the barrel chopped last Sunday. I haven't shot it yet, but the rifle was a shooter with the 24" and old style Rem trigger tuned to 2.5lbs.

I've had the rifle for close to a year, and its my first custom/precision rifle. I wanted an all purpose rifle I could learn on...something to punch paper, hunt, maybe shoot a match. Those are the reasons I went 260 and a 24" barrel, but I love the short, compact rifles. For the ranges I have access to shoot, I didn't think I'd be giving up much by shortening it, so I did it. Hope to shoot it this weekend.

Wanted to add...rifle weighs 12lbs unloaded. It's well balanced, and seemed really light until I put the boat anchor back on top..Lol.. but I really like the NF. Ideally, I'd like it at 10lbs, but I'd have to go with a lighter stock. Going to stay as is for a while, though.

If you guys can, post the weight of your set up.

I know that I'm reaching but how about RL17?

I have tested RL 17 in my AIAX 260 24" barrel using SMK 142 and got 2905 fps at max (any more and I saw cratered primers and extractor marks)
I tested RL17 in my 6.5 CM 22" GAP-10 gas gun using Scenars 136L and got 2880. It burned dirty and cycled the bolt to violently for my liking.
I have also used it in 300 WSM's and 7 WSM's, 6 XC too.

6.5 Creedmoor, or 260? What velocities are you seeing? What bullets?

Thank you
I contacted H&M and they instructed me to shoot 10 rounds down mine before I sent it off. I took my 140Amax loads for my LMT which shoot 2636 out of the 20" barrel and they ran right at 2500 out of the 16.5" bolt gun. The load is a real mild load at 41.5grns of H4350 seated @ 2.82 with a slight crimp in BHM brass that I re-sized and formed. Still haven't gotten around to sending it off yet, to many other projects going on right now.

Oh man! I've been wanting a 6.5 for awhile now and now I want one with a shorter barrel. What do you all think of a 20 inch 6.5x55 or should I go with a .260 or 6.5x47?

I have never really messed with RL because I've always heard folks had temp stability issues.

I had a 20.5" 6.5x55 at one time. It did fine, ran the 123 Amax around 2800-2850 no problem. It would run the 140's around 2600-2700.

If you have a long action It would make sense. If short action, I would go .260, 6.5x47, or 6.5 creed.

I have an intermediate length action that I am ordering a #5 contour Shilen for very shortly. Getting 2600-2700 Sounds pretty reasonable. I appreciate your input.

Had two '96 Mausers chopped from 29.1 - to 24 and 21, the 21 handled great, had exactly 100fps diff using IMR4831/120 CL, speed I recall 2833

I would do 21 in a heartbeat again, my next will be, last minute did a 22.5" Light Palma and works well, but I still like a 20-21 best overall for MY use and preference.

I think it is folklore about RL17 being more temperature sensitive than other powders. I've actually tested RL17, Varget, H4350, H1000, Retumbo etc back to back in varies calibers at temperatures below freezing up to 110F and haven't found that RL17 varies any more than another powder. They are all within 0.1fps/F of each other depending on the caliber.

The problem is RL17's pressure curve is different and it is easier to load close to max and not notice subtle overpressure signs. It is when people load too close max and aren't aware of subtle overpressure signs, then you can get into trouble with RL17.

VKC, thank you for straightening that out for me. I'm playing with 6.5 SAUM right now but will give RL a go in my 16.5" CM

I got a 17" Rem 700 in 6.5 Creedmoor from FireguyTy, (thanks).
He said he got 2700 from 42 or so grains of H4350. I am using 41.3 gr. Of 4007ssc for 2545 fps.
This unit sits in an older model Mcree folder. The barrel is a Rock creek 5R, with a 3-24 March mounted.I have not used it for 1000 yd shooting but have practiced at 600 a fair bit. I use it mostly for critter elimination. I don't remember the contour but it is fairly heavy.Just added a Tbac suppressor that seems to have improved either the groups or my shooting. As far as speed gos in the short to mid range game, I have not found a higher velocity to intrigue me if I am on target, unless I want a more violent dissassembly.

Well I received my gun back from H&M and the nitriding looks good. I cleaned it all up and assembled it. Took it out to the range yesterday and tested again with the same load I tested before the nitrining. Before the nitriding they were running right at 2500 with no pressure signs. After the nitriding they are running 2550 with some flattened primmers and sticky bolt lift. Going to start loading the 120's and 123's now to see how fast I can get them.

Which model ergo grip is that? Did you have to modify it to fit the chassis? Thanks

Ben

I’ll have to check it tonight. It’s 12.5 loaded. Had a typo on that node. 42.1 not 41.2. Probably right at 10 without. Barrel contour is a bartlein RV cut at 18”

I previously owned a 700SA with Criterion Rem-Age 1:8 6.5 Creedmoor barrel.

It ran a 140gr Hornady HPBT over 42.5gr H4350 @ 2820fps, and when I had it cut back to 18" the same exact load ran 2640fps for a loss of 22.5fps/inch.

40.7gr Varget under a 123gr Amax gave me 2810fps @ 18" length.

Barrett Fieldcraft with 18” barrel and 3-24x52 March on there. If only I would have taken the barrel tape off it would have been 7 pounds even. :)

Best load thus far was 147 ELDM at just over 2700 fps from the 18” barrel. It’s a handy little devil to carry around hunting that’s for sure.

I would love a 16-18inch 6.5 Creedmoor for a truck/hunting rig.

Go for it with the right powder/bullet combo it makes for a nifty little 600yd hunting gun. 123s at 2840 aren’t too shabby at 1000 either if you want to ring some steel. You should be able achieve more than that with a 6.5CM also.

The neighbor spun this 16” .260 barrel up for his RPR. It is a kickass truck gun.

Anyone using something like a 6.5 saum or 6.5 prc out of a short barrel? Just curious what velocity you can get with a 140 gr in a 18-20" barrel with one of the short action magnums. Probably make quite the fireball without a can too...

I think 2700 is going to be pushing it. You might get close with 44 plus grains of H4350 in a 260. My Tikka 260 is a 20 inch and I am getting 2734 with 147 ELDs using Lapua brass and 44 grains even.

I'd like to see Proof Research offer a 18" Creedmoor barrel. Their current 22" savage shank barrel is listed at 2.5 lbs. A comparable 18" steel barrel is around 3.75 lbs. I'd like something shorter since it'll be wearing a suppressor.

10# or less with an optic would be nice.

check out hardy CF barrels, they may have what you want, proof isn't the only way to go with CF barrels!

Yea I hadn't heard of Hardy before this thread, but I looked at them and man those are super high.

Carbon Six is another company to try, haven't heard much about them. They use McGowan blanks, and are much more reasonably priced, they go down to 16".

O'Neil Ops used them on their most recent build they seemed to shoot.
