I’m just looking into the idea to see if there are companies in this day in age that take your current steel barrel and wrap it to carbon. Just an idea I thought of which may be cheaper than buying a carbon barrel and going thru all the other gunsmithing required. Thanks!

Definitely won't save you any money. You gotta figure a company like Proof has their process and quality checks in place and streamlined to produce the product they produce at the price point they do. There is some competition in that market and all of them are spendy-- an unfortunate side effect of composites manufacturing.
The Carbon wrapped barrels you see start off as plain (stainless) steel barrels and are turned down by the manufacturers then wrapped in carbon, then finish-profiled. I agree with Subes in that you'd just be spreading the same work out over more venues, introducing variability, and almost certainly not beating the price point (at the same quality).

We are currently working on exactly that concept. Results so far have been promising.
First group while shooting factory loaded hunting ammo, produced a 3-shot group of .212”, and a 5-shot group of 3.36” at 600 yards.

We are still in the R&D stages. The concept and results are showing some real promise. The one I am currently shooting is strictly in the prototype stage. We have a more detailed design that we are working on, and it is simply to streamline the manufacturing processes, which in turn will make the barrels MUCH more affordable. We are getting closer, but not quite there just yet. It has been rather surprising to find out exactly what all designs and changes we have gone through so far.
Be on the lookout for "Twisted Carbon Barrels"! We have working designs for Savage, Remage, and the Ruger Precision rifle barrels. These will be our primary offerings, with the possibly more to come in the future. What I can tell you is, our barrel design and manufacturing process is getting more and more refined. We are currently working on the possibility of an introductory run cost of around $600ish just to get the ball rolling. Our goal is to get our processes down timewise, so we can eventually offer our barrels to the public at a cost of around $500ish on the streets. We are wanting to make these as affordable as possible, so that everyone will be able to shoot our barrels without burning up their wallets!
