The gun range where I shoot is owned by a club, and is very very nice. It's set up on a large amount of land with ranges split up across it for 600 yard, combined 1, 2, and 300 yard, IDPA, shotguns with pigeon thower, and a rimfire range. In the middle of the range we have what we're using as a tactical shooting range. It's a square piece of land with high berms on all sides and a table that's fenced in for observation and staging. You have to bring target stands and set up a course, and theres no cover. I want to replicate this area elsewhere on the property and set up a semi permanent course for tactical competitions and practice.
Our board of directors just built a very nice activities building on the property where we will eventually host CHL classes, and hopefully long range Target shooting classes and other training eventually as well. There are also plans to build an archery and air gun range for the little ones. This is all in an effort to attract more people in more audiences to our membership. In this same regard I believe a tactical course would be of interest and attract a lot of guys to join. In talking to guys who come out to shoot, it sounds like there is a high level of interest in this type of thing, given the closest tactically oriented ranges are 2 or 3 hours away.
I want to gather up some designs, as well as calculate costs and problems involved to make a presentation to our board and see where this idea goes. This is where I need help. Can anyone show me some pictures or designs to give me some ideas? Im thinking we could build cover out of barrels filled with rocks, railroad crossties, cinderblock walls, and other easy to acquire materials. It needs to be cost effective, but not half assed. We're not going to attract any business with a half assed mall ninja training course. The ground is hard and grassy, we would probably leave it dirt, of put down a coleiche rock surface. High thick berms could be constructed on three sides for safety with a staging area fenced off on the un-bermed side. Safety is always concern number one, especially as I said, we have kids on the range at times, and want to continue to encourage parents to bring kids out for a day of shooting. People who act like fools in any way are always asked to leave and not come back, so I think with a little extra policing and safety emphasis, we could make this happen. Especially if it were put in a place away from the rest of the general ranges.
Does this sound possible or a stupid idea? I figured I'd ask here and attempt to pit together a good presentation and portfolio before I gauge any more interest at the meetings and eventually put it in front of our owner and directors.
