any experience with er shaw barrels?

Re: any experience with er shaw barrels?

What chambering- .223, .308, .300? Sounds like you are looking for a .223 to shoot heavies.

I have a 6.5 x 55 that shoots very well. They did the chambering and trueing of the action. Opinions do vary, though.

Re: any experience with er shaw barrels?

nmntz,
The 1/8 or 1/7 will handles the heavy bullets well. I have a 1/9 it works well with the 75's. The 1/14, 1/12 is more for light varmint type bullets.
I dunno about E.R. Shaw barrels so can't offer anything on them. Sorry.

Re: any experience with er shaw barrels?

A few years back they were getting bad press for quality control but since then have quickly built a reputation for churning out an accurate, consistent product. I read somewhere that they had invested in all new tooling and CMC machines which had allowed for improved barrels. Have not tried them yet but they are on my short list.

Re: any experience with er shaw barrels?

I wouldn't expect the same performance as from a Rock or Bartlein, for example, but it's a different price point too.

Disappointment, however, isn't a big part of the end result of using their products.

Re: any experience with er shaw barrels?

Fastest twist they have in .224 is 1:9. That SHOULD work on the 75gr pills. I left an action there 6 weeks ago to have a 1:9 220 swift put on.

Are you looking at the standard 223 or AI?

Re: any experience with er shaw barrels?

it will be just standard 223 not an ai. i found a 1:17, 1:9, 1:8, and a 1:7 made by them. i would like to shoot 52gr bullets and 55gr bullets, any suggestion for those particulars?

Re: any experience with er shaw barrels?

I have used Shaw barrels in AR builds (personal and for others) and I have always been pleased with their quality (for the money that is).

52gr and 55gr loads are fairly light for .223/5.56 as things go. You certainly won't need anything faster than a 1:9 twist at the most if that is all you plan on shooting from the rifle. 1:9 will also get you up to bullets as heavy as around 69gr without any trouble. Some barrels with 1:9 twists will stabilize heavier, 75gr loads, but I wouldn't chance it. If you think you might want to move up to 75gr at any point, get a 1:8.

Re: any experience with er shaw barrels?

thank you ord, i probably will just to try it out and see how i like shooting coyotes with 75 gr, only reason i shoot 55gr right now is because i have approx 5000 noslers lol

Re: any experience with er shaw barrels?

The best way to tell if your particular barrel is stabilizing the 75gr loads is to try them on paper and see if you have any signs of bullet yaw/tumbling. Should be pretty easy to spot any problems.

Then again, with a 75gr load into a coyote that isn't properly stabilized, you should be able to tell fairly easily from the shape of the remaining coyote too!!

Correct. The heavier the bullet the more energy it will retain at distance (as long as it is a low drag design like the a max) .

Re: any experience with er shaw barrels?

I have a Shaw barrel on my 6.5-06. I haven't shot it a tremendous amount yet, but so far I have no complaints. For the price, you can't beat them IMHO.

Besides, they do the sexy helical fluting - in fact, they started the trend.
