Well, I picked up a Rem 597 HB in .22LR a few years ago (the one with a wood laminate stock and 20" heavy barrel), but have only shot indoors (50' or less) until now. Last year I built my first rifle, a Rem 700 SPS in .223 with a Vortex Mil-Mil scope and B&C scope. As my local range only goes out to 200 yards, which I can shoot well with my big stick (15/16" three shot group at 200), I thought of upgrading my 597 so I could learn more about calling the wind shooting 100 yds. and 200 yds. which would equate to shooting the .223 out to 300 to 400 yards.
So I have replaced my cheap Bushnell 3-9 scope w/fixed 50 yd. parallax that came with tip off rings with a new DIP picatinny rail, Burris Signature Zee Weaver scope rings and a Leupold Mark AR Mod. 1 4-12x40 AO scope. Also added the Volquartsen hammer which is a easy, cheap upgrade. Took it out yesterday to sight in and was getting .75" to 1" five shot groups at 25 yards and 50 yards. Took over to the 100 yard range and dialed in elevation and was able to get some 1.5" groups with the occasional weird flyer for the first shot. Ammo was CCI Std. Velocity. Maybe I should try some true match ammo to whittle the groups down at 100.
Tried to hit the steel that is out at 220 yards, but ran out of elevation. Just held a yard and a half above the steel and did ring it! So, short story long, the 597 has surprised me with how well it can do! Still got a few FTF with the CCI, but that's just a .22 thing....
