I just ordered one of these today to be a cheap tactical trainer in place of my Remington 700P. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with this rifle and any suggestions on mods. Thanks everybody!

I picked up one of these a couple of weeks ago and finally decided to put a Sightron S1 4-12x40 with adjustable objective. I got to shoot it this past weekend with a few different types of ammo. At 25 yards Eley Tenex was one 1/4" hole and some Golden Eagle Target did almost as good. I did find out what needs to be improved on the rifle and the Volquartzen hammer and MCARBO spring and bushing kit will be here tomorrow. The rifle was 100% reliable. So far I'm tickled with it. This weekend should good shooting with the trigger improvements.

I've had one for over a year and have been pleased with it, for my intended use. I mainly use the 597HB for squirrel hunting. I shoot mainly CCI ammo, maintains sub 1" at 25 yds. and 1.5" at 50 yards with my cheap scope and old eyes. I replaced the magazine with the KeepShooting mag. The trigger is not great, but can be improved somewhat. Does not have the aftermarket following of the 10/22, obviously, but will feed and fire every type of ammo that I have tried. Just my 2 cents. My son also owns one, and it has functioned flawlessly as well.

Yes, I've had two. One was the factory HB and one I built up. Really not much difference between the two except the factory HB is less than .920 in diameter. The best money you can spend on one is buying the Volquartsen target hammer, that's all it needs and it improves the trigger immensely.

Well, I picked up a Rem 597 HB in .22LR a few years ago (the one with a wood laminate stock and 20" heavy barrel), but have only shot indoors (50' or less) until now. Last year I built my first rifle, a Rem 700 SPS in .223 with a Vortex Mil-Mil scope and B&C scope. As my local range only goes out to 200 yards, which I can shoot well with my big stick (15/16" three shot group at 200), I thought of upgrading my 597 so I could learn more about calling the wind shooting 100 yds. and 200 yds. which would equate to shooting the .223 out to 300 to 400 yards.

So I have replaced my cheap Bushnell 3-9 scope w/fixed 50 yd. parallax that came with tip off rings with a new DIP picatinny rail, Burris Signature Zee Weaver scope rings and a Leupold Mark AR Mod. 1 4-12x40 AO scope. Also added the Volquartsen hammer which is a easy, cheap upgrade. Took it out yesterday to sight in and was getting .75" to 1" five shot groups at 25 yards and 50 yards. Took over to the 100 yard range and dialed in elevation and was able to get some 1.5" groups with the occasional weird flyer for the first shot. Ammo was CCI Std. Velocity. Maybe I should try some true match ammo to whittle the groups down at 100.

Tried to hit the steel that is out at 220 yards, but ran out of elevation. Just held a yard and a half above the steel and did ring it! So, short story long, the 597 has surprised me with how well it can do! Still got a few FTF with the CCI, but that's just a .22 thing....
