Hey guys new here. I don't have a lot of experience with optics or bolt guns larger than rimfire. I just picked up a new Savage 10PC .223 and am looking for decent piece of glass. I don't have a fortune to spend but know enough that budget glass is a waste.

I would like to stay around the $450 mark, Have at least 18x zoom and a AO. I would prefer something up to a 24x but most likely outta my price range. My range also only goes to 200 yards and I will most likely speed most of my time shooting at 50-100 yards and maybe even a few varmints from time to time.

Does anyone have experience with the scope I mentioned or a suggestion in the 400-500 range?

I have used that PROSTAFF scope and I think you would be happier with a MONARCH 3 4-16 BDC. I have used one to shoot to 500 yards going 10 for 10 on 12 inch steel plates. The BDC reticle will allow you to dial in your rifle scope and ammo for the greatest possible accuracy. A scope I have on my bolt action Savage 110 is a M-223 3-12 BDC 600. This has worked very well for me on prairie dogs and coyotes. Here's a pic of my MONARCH 3 4-16 BDC.

Used that exact scope on a shoot at the protac range in Mingus, TX last year on a TC 300 win. Shot from 100 out to 500 yards on gongs and silouettes. At 500 yards with the BDC reticle I was calling and hitting a steel deer silouette; Left antler-hit, right antler-hit, nose-hit, etc. At 500 yards with decent weather that image was clear and I must have put 4 boxes through that rifle in 1 day and scope stayed zeroed perfectly. never touched the turrets, just used the BDC with a print out from Nikons "Spot On" software.

The BDC and spot on software works well. I attended the Texas shoot as well. I was very impressed with the BDC and how well the system worked. Ive used several programs and spot on is easy yo use and fast.

Well I let this go all day yesterday and nuttin. I was up till almost 5am as I work nights. No replies yet at that time so I ordered before I went to bed. I did end up going with the prostaff 5 4.5-18x40BDC. I hope it ends up being OK as I see from this thread I maybe should have gone with the monarch.

I have used and own a PROSTAFF 5 BDC scope. I think you will not regret your choice. Very clear, easy to use, excellent light gathering and field of view. Nikon's Spot On Ballsitic Program and BDC reticle make for some incredible accuracy. Enter your shooting data, cal.,scope, ammo fps out of your gun, scope height and you are good to go. As OP Expert described, accurracy is fantastic. Hope you post pics and range report. Spend some time looking over Spot On, you'll be surprised at all the helpful info at your fingertips. Drop me a note if you have any question's.
