F T/R Competition Any Long Range High Master F T/R shooters ?

Is there really anyone in the US that has this classification in the NRA books ?
I am guessing that this would apply to anyone that competes at 800/900/1000yd Approved or Registered matches.

I know my chances of making it there shooting my 223 are against the odds....but even when I look at the scores that folks post for 1k matches, I rarely see anyone (in F T/R) shooting in the upper end of Master for a 60rd match... and that is with the long bbl 308s

maybe my math is wrong ... wouldn't you have to shoot at least a 589 out of 600 in (4) matches to be a High Master ? That's 98% !!

Actually, 588. But remember that you have to do this over at least 120 shots. That usually means at two different matches.

High Master, I don't know of any. Master, I personally know of two. I myself am having a hard time getting out of the Expert Class.

Maybe my rulebook is out of date, but table II says 97% = high master for long range and table III says 98.5% = high master for mid range.

I don't know anybody. Can you search this on the NRA's site?
Are you gonna build a 308?
I was going to put one together this year, but decided on a 284 instead.

AEDC in Tullahoma, TN. It's the Arnold Air Force Base range. They let a club up there host matches several times a year. Nice mix of civilians, LEO and military shooters. Lots of fun and very relaxed atmosphere. I think the shooters are so good that they just don't mind newbies because they get a kick out of helping them learn. At the last match we had a new guy show up who had no clue what he was doing (I resemble that remark so I don't feel bad saying it). Anyway, he showed up with a 223 and it must have taken 50 rounds to get him on paper. He had two masters in the pit and at least one on the line working together to help this guy get on paper. And I heard at least twice from these guys "we can't let him give up. He'll get discouraged and never try again". Very cool. They finally got him hitting the target and everybody there, 40 something, got a huge thrill out of it. And this was a sanctioned match. No rules broken, no extra time given. Just helping a new shooter along.

Can't praise these these folks from the Warren County Rifle Club enough. And some excellent folks from the Blue and Gray club in north Alabama who always help out at these matches. And no, I'm not a member of either one. Lol

Just to clarify, since I was the one running this match, the first-place finisher in F-T/R actually has an "Expert" rating in Long-Range F-Class. She also finished third at Nationals as an "Expert". I think this shows how hard it is to obtain Master or HM classification in LR F-Class while shooting F-T/R. That is why we fully differentiate F-T/R from F-Open when we list the results and award prizes like we did last weekend.

My apologies for the error. There were two high masters there and I just found out they didn't have that ranking in F-TR, but rather F Open and Any/Irons.

no prob Bama .... I have only found a few F/TR shooters that are even in Master Class for 1k (so far).....the rest of us are stuck in Expert.....maybe I need to practice more... or find a less windy range - lol

2011 was my first year competing. My first 120 for score I made Expert. My next 120 rounds I made Master... The first 3 matches I was deep in HM territory, but the next match was windy as shit and I only managed a lowish Master score. Ended up missing HM by .04%. The next 60 rounds was HM again. If I had skipped the windy day, I'd have my HM sticker! Oh well, real HMs are HM on ANY day, not just calm ones.

This was with a 5000+ round OEM 24" Savage barrel, a S&B 5-25, and 175smk @ 2675fps.

This would be a Fullbore classification which is a combination of midrange and long range shot under the Fullbore rules. I am also high master Fullbore.

Well, since others are sharing...let me tell you about my first F-Class match at AEDC. This last match was my second. Until a year ago I had been solely a pistol shooter. I'd done that for about 20 years and hadn't shot a rifle since I was about 9, so about 32 years. Then my step-son wanted to learn to shoot so I bought us a couple of Ruger 10 22s. I got hooked. My step-son, well he likes it but the jury is still out on how much. Lol

Anyway, about 4 months ago I went into my local gun store and told the guy behind the counter I wanted to learn to shoot 1000 yards. Turns out he's a master and coach. So we talk about my budget and he gets me set up with a Savage 11 Long Range Hunter in 308, and a Leupold Mark 4 LRT. A month later I'm at my first 1000 yard match shooting F-TR. I had never shot more than 200 yards before. Can you guess how that went?

The match was at AEDC and they treated me great! After the first 10 rounds or so, that nobody could figure out where they went, everybody thought it was pretty much hopeless. After about 20 rounds they got me on paper and on the first series I hit the target 4 times. I was ready to go home and they wouldn't let me. The second series I hit the target 16 out of 20 and scored 125. The third series I actually hit the target 20 for 20 and scored 140. Thrilled doesn't begin to cover it!

The next match went even better. No misses at all and scored 176-1, 155-1, and 164-0 on a pretty windy day. Ok, windy to me. Doping the wind is hard!

I may suck at this point but damn this is fun! And what the heck, I'm riding the short bus but at least I'm not wearing a helmet and licking the windows anymore.

My first F-T/R match at 1000 yd wasn't too different than yours. I was doing ok, but the wind came up in the middle of the third match and I dropped 48 points in 6 shots (6, miss, miss, miss, miss, 6) for a disappointing final score of 497/600-3X (180-1X, 172-0X, 145-2X). Next match I brought that up to a 552-7X, and the match after that a 569-11X (which including 3-7s on the last 3 shots...missed another big wind shift). Best part is, like you, I'm getting better and it's much more enjoyable when you have some confidence, are hitting the target, and keeping up with the wind for the most part. Stick with it brother, you're getting there!

I just started this year myself. I've shot at AEDC twice and Bakley GA once.
Every match I've had one bad relay with the wind, the other two I usually do ok.
Need to get more time on the range and try to get a handle on it.

Can't say I've missed the target any, but have dropped some 7's that I have no idea where they came from.

To answer the OP's question ... if you check the 2011 F/TR National results you can see a number of HM shooters mentioned ... Jeff Rorer who won it was the first I saw but going down the list there seems to be many.

With the 2011 FCNC being a blend of 600 and 1000 yards (midrange and long range), you enter as your highest classification held. Since I am high master at midrange, that is the level I would compete at for the entire competition. I have yet to make high master at long range shooting only FTR.

Yes, I thought it was a little surprising to see myself listed in HM for the entire competition. Especially since there was only one day of mid-range and two days of long range, but I understand why they did that. Thankfully, this year I will be in Expert for the entire competition, since there is no mid-range component.

You can shoot based on a temparary classification, but you need 120 shots at that distance (midrange vs long range) to get classified or to move up in classification. Generally, that means two consecutive weekend matches.

thanks for posting this usftr....but as Denys mentioned earlier, these are combined ratings for Midrange and Long Range...so the question still stands unanswered....
maybe a list from this year's Nationals will solve the mystery

Doubtful, there are people shooting F-T/R who got clasified in F-Open. There really is nothing to indicate if a rating was obtained in F-T/R or F-Open.

This is why the F-Class "classifications" are not particularly useful. In addition to being able to use the same classification interchangeably between F-Open and F-T/R, there will be a huge difference in "average scores" between someone that shoots on a small wind tunnel range regularly, and someone that shoots on some of the more difficult wind ranges available (Ben Avery, Raton, Rattlesnake, etc. etc.)

Perfect case in point is my home range, it's 1000 yards, but tree lined, and generally gentle winds (although some evil vertical!). I have shot a 150-12X at 800 before, and followed up only dropping a few more at 900 and 1000. Could I have done this at Rattlesnake, or Raton... almost assuredly not.

It is for this reason that I generally remove the classifications from the results before I post them (I think the aforementioned clip was one of my posts from Lodi last year). This tends to simplify who the top shooters are at a given match without having to sieve through a bunch of (mainly) superfluous classification separations.

The only person that i am aware of that was classified HM from FO to F/TR is Derek Rogers. Spoke with him last year in wisconsin and he was telling us his HM story with his win in FCN in 2010 carried over to F/TR. really nice guy.

Derek is a spectacular shot with either style of F-Class; Open, or F-T/R. There's a reason he made the 2013 Team!

That said, there are plenty of shooters that shoot both disciplines, it's no fault of their own that separate records aren't kept.

I will be in Expert until I die, I think. Mystery 6 at 900 yds, in the middle of a string of 9s, 10s, Xs yesterday at Forbes in Albany, NY!! No wind to speak of, either! Meanwhile a Mr. Bock was hammering the x ring next to me....but he did drop a point or two at 1000.

Last weekend was my first ever 1000 yd F Class match, and only my 4th ever rifle match. I shoot F-Open but shot an 898-19x...yep Darrell, it was at Rattlensnake. The shotgun anemometer peaked at 42mph for the day, just down the hill. Best we can figure on the range, we got hit with 18-20 full value. I could give a dozen excuses but suffice it to say, I did give up a bullet when I got in a hurry and shot my buddies target!! Rookie mistake! I shoot a 6.5x284 and it made me realize that in the F-open there is no limit on building a rig and there is no amount of $ that can be spent. For this reason, I am kicking the idea to go to F T/R so that in the end, more or less, it is me against another shooter, not me against another shooter and another entirely different rifle. Hope that makes sense. For all those I have contacted since my match, thanks for the information!!
