Any love for the 17 HMR?

A few years ago I got a Savage 93R17 TR (Tacticool) for Christmas as a training rifle on the cheap. I love shooting my HMR, ammo is cheap and ballistics are much better than 22LR, I think it makes a great trainer. However, finding local competitions isn't easy for the 17 HMR and with the recent rise of NRL22 it seems the good 'ol 22LR is going to make a resurgence. I think my only chance at really shooting in competitions would be something I could do with my kids at this point, would love to stick with the HMR platform but wondering if it'd be better to invest in a nice 22LR like the new Vudoo V-22? Also curious if Vudoo will come out with a 22 Magnum action that I could get a nice 17 HMR barrel spun up for, but again, if there aren't going to be any competitions geared around this cartridge then maybe its best to just stick with 22LR.

You make an excellent point demo, the poor ballistics of the 22LR definitely makes for more turret challenge at closer ranges while the 17 can be taken out a bit further and still be challenged with drop and wind. I did get the HMR when I still lived on acreage so it had multiple uses there as more than just a target rifle but darn if those pocket gophers ever popped their little heads up (sneaky buggers who avoided most of my traps, except the black hole).

Lotsa love here ! I find I'm shooting my .17 HMRs way more often than my .22s. Very fun round to shoot, not so much if you're a tree rat though...

It's hard not to like the HMR! I've got several from a 452 Varmint to a Cooper, 1717, 1517, Volquartsen and a 597 Magnum. It's a fun little round!

I thought that this round would lay waste to the steel targets used in most Tactical Rimfire comps, because of its, ahem, considerable velocity.

So, prolly a great hunting round (crap I have cats as pets, but they stay inside), but not so good in TR comps.

I feel kind of the same way.

Part of it is I wish they'd come out with match factory ammo. The other is that that 17gr bullet sheds speed quick and not much energy left at the longer distances. I shot a crow at 150Y and it flew off, lol, maybe I didn't place the shot perfectly, the feathers poofed so it seemed a decent hit.

My solution was recently a 20VT improved. 32's at 3700 fps with 17.7 grains of powder in a 21" barrel.

22 mag has always been my go-to for power and staying inside 150Y. There's something about a 40 grainer at 2000 fps, it hits hard and is destructive???

It's surprising what a good match grade 22rf using match ammo does as well. The funnest kill I've seen with one is a potgut at 265Y, faced at us, the head was pushed into the body, lol.

The only true bitch about .22 match is no splatter visual satisfaction . But a big+ is for all-day shooting . .22 match is nice to the ears all day without ear protection . The .17hmr is just like .22 mag. and it has a rude little pop .

But match .22 even hitting full size prairie dogs 150 yard comically resembles knocking them in the head with a ball peen hammer, just a little body swagger and they just fall over .
If you know your rifle and holdovers, lobbing out .22 match subs. will out shoot a 17hmr all day long in accuracy .
I sat with both rifles . the anny.64 .17hmr and match 22. for 12-hr. several days in a row shooting sage rats in the wind in the alfalfa crop. . Especially moving out in 100 yard and out down range . Subsonic match .22 has better, consistent wind hold and you get far better accuracy .

This is surprising, but the numbers don't lie, or rather the experience. I never shot my 17 side by side with my 22LR to see, but now you have me curious. PS - what subsonic match ammo are you using? I've always had to wear ear protection even with 22LR

Was Nothing Special . just cheep Mexican Aguila SE, 'LR subsonico punta hucea' .
and that is just it . I have not ran the 'wind hold' numbers for years, but subsonic 40 grn. Vs .17hmr . .the .22 subsonic whips the 17hmr hands down when moving down range .

Wind affects the 17 hmr worse than the 22lr?
That doesn't sound right.
The BC of the 17 means it is less affected by wind than the 22lr.
Also, with the shorter time of flight, less time for wind to push.
Ammunition quality is a different story.
Neither CCI or Winchester do much in the way of quality control.
Shoot across a ballistic chronograph for a few bricks
and the numbers will show just how poor the QC is.

Unless I put something wrong into my SHOOTER app, 22rf 40gr/.140BC at 1095 fps - Lapua Polar Biathlon in my rifle, has less wind drift than 17hmr 17gr/.125BC at 2500 fps by the 100Y point and the 22 makes gains farther out in less wind drift.

The 20gr offering will probably close that gap but I didn't calc it.

Of course the drop is way less with the 17.

Want to see something horrible in the wind try the calc's on the 30gr/.11BC 22 mag at 2200 fps out at distance.

Hmm, it's the spin drift in the app that gave me the wrong wind data! I turned it off and it makes a huge difference??? I never noticed that before till now.

I have the Anschutz 1416 in 17hmr and it is the most accurate rimfire rifle I have ever shot. I have owned savages, volquartsens, Ruger, CZ ....... honestly with a 17 the best group I had ever shot was a .58. I am talking 22lr and 17 hmr. Most of the time .8-1.20 I have won 4-500 dollars of the years with people saying at 100 yards they had a 1/3 inch 22 or 17. I bought the Anschutz rifle and tried ever ammo out there in it. Best group was .89 and average about 1.5 with 6 different ammo and weight groups. I got pissed and about wrapped it around a tree. From my days owning a volquartsen, I had some leftover A17 CCI ammo. It's cheap and hot. My friend said I should try it out, I was putting the gun up and going home to put it on Gun Broker. I shot the first group and though I put one round on the target. Upon further review, it was one ragged hole. This thing shoots .2-.3 consistently. I have killed lots of groundhogs. The only drawback to the Anschutz is the cost of the damn mags. Also especially a sub 22, you get a lot more ricochets. I live in Ohio and hunt on harder ground.

I have 3 very accurate .17 HMR’s and I love them. Out to 200 yards they are definitely more accurate than any .22LR. However, beyond about 250 yards a good .22 will outshoot any .17 HMR all day long. The reason of course is because most .17HMR goes transonic at around 250 yards, and that’s when the wheels fall off. Subsonic match .22 ammo is far more consistent and predictable than .17HMR from 250-400 yards and beyond.

I've shot thousand of sage rats with the HMR and hm2 which had replaced my Ruger M77/22 mag about 10 years ago. The laser accuracy of a good HM2 is hard to argue from 25-150 yds, the HMR is not that much better from 25-125, but beyond 125 out to 225 it flexes is muscle in my experience. The .17 WSM hit quite a bit harder than the HMR and it's accuracy appears to be similar.

The .22 LR just doesn't do much for me sage rat hunting. Too much time calculation/guesstimating hold-overs when targets abundant. It also wounds more than kills allowing the squirrel to hole up thus taking food away from the beneficiaries of our Raptor Feeding Program.

If I could only have one .17 it would be the .17 HMR. If I could only have two they would be the HM2 and WSM. Thankfully I can have 3+ because they are very fun, effective, and affordable to shoot.

At the range I shoot more .22 lr than anything else and thoroughly enjoy it. Ringing 10" round steel at 300 yds consistently with a suppressed .22 just makes me grin.

But if I could only have one rimfire it would be the .17 HMR.

You mentioned your raptor feeding program. I’m curious if you use a lead free bullet when killing the squirrels for the raptors? I know they are easily affected by lead poisoning and wasn’t sure if you use a lead free projectile. I had never thought about it before but I was telling a friend about the prairie dogs I was shooting with my .22 out to 300 yards and he freaked out on me because I was using a lead bullet. (He is a falconer and avid supporter of birds of prey) I got a very thorough class on how lead bullets used on prairie dogs were killing hawks and eagles who eat them.

Not using lead free, but the 17 and 20 grain .17 Vmax are about as responsible as you can get. People freak out way too easy now days. I managed to survive a childhood of lead painted toys, riding in a car with no child seat or seatbelts, and helmetless on bicycles.

As far as the lead thing and the Raptors, most of these sage rats either explode or have a complete pass through from the .17 VMAX , inside of prolly 200yards. NOT saying it's impossible or doenst happen but i bet 80-90% of the time it does. I dont think the birds are getting "THAT" much lead in their diet.

That's an interesting point 10x, I am all for managing our wildlife responsibly and if there is concrete evidence that birds of prey are dying from lead poisoning from eating critters that have been shot with lead bullets I would be interested in that research, but I am also cautious as I know agenda's can skew research. Did your friend who gave you this lecture by chance identify the studies that concluded these birds were dying as a direct result of hunters using lead bullets?

Everybody knows that since all it takes to turn a 10/22 into a "sniper rifle" and the ULTIMATE "survival rifle" since you can carry thousands of rounds and slay thousands of bodies per bug-out and every 10/22 sniper has "head shot" deer kills by the dozen and that's all by "spotlight" (nothing like dumbasses bragging about criminal "hunting" activity that would get their gun seized if not their truck impounded and their ass tossed in jail and at best a nice multi-year "break" from having to fill hunting tags who are obviously WAY on top of "hunting" and what to use and why) and .17 HMR is a MAGNUM rifle cartridge its like...a MAGNUM and stuff and has those really cool long-range pointy plastic tippy "pills" all you gotta have is a 10/22 with a bull barrel, a high-end optic, a couple high-cap "banana clips" strapped and ready to flip halfway through a "gun battle" and you're damned near Chris Kyle BEFORE you get SERIOUS with the "match trigger". That'll get you to at least double normal .22LR range because everybody knows that when you DOUBLE THE PRICE OF A FACTORY RIFLE TO BUY THE FIRST PARTS OF YOUR "BUILD" AND MAKE SURE ITS ALL "WHERE IT COUNTS" YOU AUTOMATICALLY DOUBLE THE RANGE. AND plenty of 10/22 Tactitools are "banging steel" in their "how far will a .22 LR kill" videos on YouTube at 500 with a "full build". For we mortals without snake blood running through our veins and a secret retracted row of tactical tiger teeth that pop out when its time to slay bodies just in case somebody in our "squad" doesn't get his zombies killed shooting the through the barrier so when we "clear the room" we end up having to tear a zombies throat...I mean SPINE out with our teeth in order to remain tactically intact, we're doing good to get 150 yards out of .22LR in an "old-fashioned" bolt-action non-tactical but long-barreled high-quality classic "target" rifle like say a Marlin Model 81 or Remington 510. If we had the teeth and the snake blood and the badass big ballsedness and built-in ballistic calculators and vapor trail viewers our "superiors" have, we'd naturally not only be way better shooters but we'd automatically know which rifle to "build" or buy and obviously "target" plus "long range" = "match" and since the only "match" ammo available for rimfire is .22LR it has to be the BEST LONG-RANGE "SNIPER" AMMO and its just common sense that since .17 HMR is pretty "new", if it was good for "sniping" it would be called .17 Sniper Tactical Rimfire or something to clearly show even to dumbasses like us and ESPECIALLY dumbasses like us who need all the help we can get if we're going to be anything but zombie shit by day 2 that we NEED THE SNIPER AMMUNITION. Even if they'd called it "match" like Tactical Rimfire Match we'd know. But no "match" PLUS its made by HORNADY so either the BRASS OR BULLETS ARE GOING TO SUCK AND PROBABLY BOTH BECAUSE EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT HORNADY CAN'T MAKE AMMUNITION TO AMOUNT TO SHIT AND THEY SHOULD JUST GIVE UP AND GO BACK TO MAKING......UH......AMMUNITION FOR OTHER STUFF. OR SOMETHING. And they should just LICENSE their .17 HMR to LAPUA because LAPUA ROCKS. And LAPUA would probably be able to fix the "primer issue" with .17 HMR like Lapua fixed 6.5 Creedmoor or rather 6.5 CM since ever since Lapua "fixed" that little problem where Hornady was so stupid they used a large rifle primer in a short-action compact non-magnum "long range" cartridge that "only" holds 35-45 grains of powder or so like they thought it needed a primer that could ignite like....40-50 grains of powder in a .308 or .30-06 or something. Dumbasses. Clearly since .223 and .22 Hornet use small rifle primers and those are "small" and "fast" cartridges with "light" bullets and are like still high pressure and stuff, small rifle primers would be plenty. Duh. I'm just waiting for Lapua to "fix" .243 Winchester, .257 Roberts, .22-250 Remington and all the other several dozen "small" rifle cartridges that are short-action with light bullets. Clearly dumbasses at Hornady and apparently all the dumb Americans who decided there were about 5 "commercial" centerfire bottlenecked rifle cartridges that needed small-rifle primers instead of like....all of them and stuff and no Papa Lapua's gotta clean up the mess. Good thing Lapua also knows that because all those primers are too big for their cartridges their flash holes are too small. And punched instead of drilled. Everybody knows the RIGHT way to build a cartridge is with a SMALL PRIMER and BIG FLASH HOLE so the "flash", which is way smaller and faster and stuff and has more "penetration" into the powder needs a bigger hole to shoot through because its so fast and small it might accidentally "get lost" on the way to or through the flash hole and like shoot out of the back of the primer or something. Everybody knows that's where "pierced primers" come from. Damned we're lucky the incredibly brilliant gun minds at European companies that despite being in countries with "gun bans" are at least still looking out for us dumbass Americans. Probably they feel bad because their ancestors let our ancestors leave Europe and come to the U.S. where its a miracle anybody lives past 2 years old with the racism and the slavery and shooters and the diabetes and disease and the SIDS and....them AIDS. I usually shoot them with a .220 swift, a 22-250, or a 6.5 creedmoor and I definitely agree very little lead remains in their body after being hit with any of those rounds. I’m sure the ones I shoot with my .22 do have lead in them but I’m not sure how much that harms the birds. I only mentioned it because the topic of feeding the raptors was brought up and it reminded me of the lecture I was given by my friend the bird lover. I raise chickens and racing pigeons here so hawks are my enemy. I’ve personally witnessed a few who have suffered from lead poisoning! Lol

I got the savage 17hmr and love it. Wind can throw it around but man it’s fun to shoot jackrabbits with it out to 300yds and suppressed it’s incredible on the ears.

Love my 17 HMR. Ruger 77/17 with Clarks Custom barrel. Acuracy is insane and its shoots most factory ammo really well. 9 shots at 100 yards. I know people say it alot, but this is not cherry picked. The gun is a lazer.

Never gave any love to the HMR. Then I won a stainless savage with the bull barrel at a benefit. Thought I'd give it a try. Turned out to be a blast. +1 for shooting prairie dogs with .22lr. Love watching them double over and fall like they got punched in the guts as much as I like them flying in 3 different directions.

Love my 17 HMR. Ruger 77/17 with Clarks Custom barrel. Acuracy is insane and its shoots most factory ammo really well. 9 shots at 100 yards. I know people say it alot, but this is not cherry picked. The gun is a lazer. View attachment 6936630

That is impressive!

I've been a .17HMR & HM2 fan from the beginning and now the .17WSM. They are tack drivers when you get a good barrel.

Tack driver? Maybe, on occasion, if CCI or Winchester has a good run on the line.
I won't make the claim of consistent accuracy with the 17 hmr.
My ballistic chronograph wont let me. My current hobby is 50 shots at 200 yards.
22lr, 22wmr, 17wsm and 17hmr, all off the bench, all at 200 yards, all across a chronograph.
When I get a box with properly assembled rimfire ammo, results are impressive.
If the QC isn't there, inconsistent primer amounts, sloppy or loose bullet seating,
out of spec brass, canted or damaged bullets, won't produce anything worth bragging about.
The majority of rimfire is intended for use at 25 yards. At that range ammo defects
haven't the time to affect trajectories. Push out past 50 yards and extended time of flight
allows gravity and aerodynamics to shove those rounds off on random trajectories.

Love my 93r17 tactical as well, have quite a few rounds through it and it shoots amazingly well for the price. Have a lot of clean kills with it on pests out to 250ish yards.

17 HMR is the gun that rides along in the truck or ranger 90% of the time. Love that thing, little Lazer beam

My RAR Target doing what it excels at, sniping hyper-sensitive digger squirrels in the Hazelnut orchard. Flat shooting with minimal ricochet liability and responds well to suppression. 310 squirrels KIA so far this season.
