Any mountain bikers out there 2.0

My sons first race of the Colorado High School season yesterday as a Sophomore.....Leadville Colorado at 10,500 feet will get your attention pretty quick.
I rode the course after all schools did their pre-ride before race day and it was unbelievably beautiful. I can now see the need for extremely light bikes with 100-120mm suspension when the clock is ticking on an XC style layout. There were a fair amount of hard tails on the property as well.

Man we need the rain here in NTX, but its shutting all the trails down. I am Jonesing to ride. Got out on Sunday for a ride, but that's been it for the last week.
Most of the NTX trails in my area are open today, but the bike is broke and there is a volleyball game I have to go to tonight. Relaced wheel should be here this afternoon and hopefully sneak a ride in tommorrow.

that's why you need more than one

...and a road bike.

You're able to ride when the trails are too wet to ride.

Do you use the DORBA App? Most trails on it are closed right now. Looks like McKinney has trails open as of three days ago.

I just ride the mountain bike on the roads when I have to. I am not going to spend money on a road bike, I hate riding on the road. I can almost tolerate gravel. Still not quite enough to buy a gravel bike. That sucks about the back injury, hope you heal up soon.

I do not use the DORBA app to much, most of the time I go on there and its not working. Dinosaur Valley, Cleburne, Western Heritage, Quanah, and Parks of Aledo, Wildcatter Ranch were all open this morning. I am going to try to go to POA in the morning if I dont get rained out. We have not gotten any more than just a little sprinkle of rain this morning. I am going to service forks and have the bike all ready for the wheel showing up this afternoon....

Road and mountain are complementary. Road gives you the fitness. Mtn gives you the bike handling and instantaneous power

I just got back from some hill efforts. Can't call em repeats cause I rode a loop. The sky is now darn near black and the wind's picked up. Good timing. I gots it today

I Mountain Bike a Specialized Stumpjumper 29'er hardtail here in S.E. Michigan whenever I get the chance however I lived in Chandler/Gilbert Arizona for 3 years and built a custom Evil Bikes The Wreckoning for those trails. It was a little tough to climb but bombing the downhills was choice!

Those technical high desert trails are what we live for around here!
Had a chance to demo an Evil Calling and Wreckoning several years ago, they are great burly bikes! Liked the Wrecker best but it was just a bit cramped for me. They did just update the geometry on em recently tho.

How much does something like that run?

I built mine for just over $4200 in 2018. Purchased the frame with rear suspension from Evil and pieced rest from new parts through Steve at Air Park Bikes in Scottsdale. Now that's a Mountain Bike Shop and Steve is great to deal with! Pike 180mm front, TRP brakes, SRAM GX drivetrain, carbon bars, Reynolds carbon 29'er wheel set, Maxxis tires. Miss the HELL out of that bike but I'm done living in Arizona however my older brother still lives in Mesa.

BTW, I sold that in mid 2020 for $6800 to a guy from Tuscon.

I have not ridden Wagon Wheel, but we have that similar chunky terrain here in Western Colorado. We are incredibly blessed to have some of the best trails (in my opinion) in the entire country. I'm sure those are smoking fast times around those trails you posted and those days are way in my past as I'm getting old and slow. Ridden a few times in Moab (we're about 80 miles away) but typically we take the Motos. I keep threatening to do the Whole Enchalada....some day. Sedona and St. George Utah are on my short list of must do as well.
The weather here right now is soooo good but turning to snow soon, Vail should be getting 6-8" of snow this weekend.
My son and I had an awesome ride tonight....chasing daylight!

And Moore Fun Trail from last Sunday. I try to keep up and not to die....the kid makes it look easy.

I had plans on biking the Whole Enchilada as well however I returned back to Michigan before I could make it to Utah. I am still in good shape and have the energy so maybe I can fulfill the bucket list ride soon.

Beautiful hardtail Shooter!! Is that a 120mm fork on there?
Give us an update when you get a chance, I'd like to know how she pedals.
That is a 120mm fork. This bike can climb really well. Also, being slightly shorter than my Pivot Mach 4SL it really shines on tight single track through the woods. They sent me a Medium and I ordered a Large. I didn't realize this until after it was built up. I am am 5'11.5" and they medium size chart 5'5"-5'11", so I figure it would be okay. I had to put a longer stem on it than I would have wanted to use so I could get the reach I wanted. I have a longer torso than most, so large bikes seem to fit me better. All of that said, I am am really liking the bike so far and I feel faster on it than my Pivot. I need to get a Mous mount so I can actually see my times on the same trails.

Looks like my weekend will be on gravel roads. It is going to rain on Friday and Saturday, so all of these trails will remain closed.

Yeah, looking the same on the west side too. Cameron Park in Waco is open no matter what! We needed the rain bad, trails were getting hammered from being super dry. I have been thinking about making a run down to Revilie Peak Ranch and Spider mountain. They are still showing open after last nights storms. They must not have gotten very much down there.

Was the crack in the frame from your bad wreck several months ago?
I don't think so. I somehow kicked up a big rock that hit the plastic bash guard, broke it and smashed the frame underneath. I have rocks kick up often but this one was not fucking around...

It is great that Santa Cruz is helping with a crash replacement front triangle but it takes my initial $9300 purchase to $10300 in just over a year. But this is the best riding suspension system I have ever pedaled. I put a lot of road miles on it and never need to lock it out except for really step climbs that I want to smash. I have done 30 mile road rides with the 2.4 Aspen tires set at 19f 21r and averaged 19-20 mph several times (on semi flat routes). It hammers!

Last Sunday......most likely one of the last rides of the year. About 3 inches of snow fell last night and getting pretty darn cold.

Wife is looking into a Peloton indoor trainer, anybody have any opinions on them? Good, bad or whatever? The idea is to get something adjustable for a tall guy like me and also easy to adjust for my son and wife and Peloton looks like it does that pretty well. We have a basic indoor gym/weights and an elliptical, but I absolutely HATE working out inside and as I'm getting older it's becoming more difficult to get back in shape after a 3 month "off season" during winter. Got to get motivated somehow I guess.

The Peloton you have to change resistance with a knob, you have to pay the subscription, a buddy has it and I was less than impressed with the bike it self, it seems like it's the $500 big box indoor bike is all it really is.
I have the Stages SB20 trainer and it's awesome, the factory saddle does suck, swapped it out for an Ergon that works decently for both my wife and myself. Works from sub 5' kids to me 6'2" and a couple inch ape index. I have used it with Zwift and an Android tablet or just use it with the Stages app or my Garmin watch or head unit. I need a good mountain summer trip next year..... The advantage of down here is we get to ride all winter.

Any of you guys ride ebikes?

I’ve been thinking of getting one. Trying to decide between a full power or a lightweight.
No, as we can't ride them on a bunch of the trails here in Texas. It's an issue with trail funding and insurance, there are some certain laws that need to be adjusted and things like the cat1 pedal assist defined a bit more. There are the private owned lands that allow, and many public lands do not state no e-bikes. It's still a giant grey area. I have been thinking about a full power basically Enduro bike for mountain back county and same for going to Arkansas. Some of the guys I ride with have them. Instead of a somewhat normal like 20-30 mile ride they will double that on the e-bikes. Shuttling the jump line at one of the places we can ride them is awesome.

My thoughts on getting one is for trips where we can cover a bunch more miles and get further out with the e-bike. A buddy of mine rides quite a bit, his wife does not ride as much, she has an e-bike to keep up with the climbing in the mountains. She has the endurance, just the difference in strength.

If your getting one to get in shape to ride your "analog" pedal bike then get a lightweight.
But if you are old like me and will never be able to get back into racing shape, due to working conditions or health issues then get a "FULL POWER" and have some fun. Around Southwest Colorado there are a lot of people buying them and riding them on the trails, even though they are not allowed. Just like back in the beginning of the mountain bike craze, we had to be trail ambassadors and be kind and nice to hikers and horse riders in order to be allowed on the trails, E-Bikes will have to do the same.

When to replace a helmet? A few weeks ago I was on a solo ride and took a pretty good spill. I hit hard enough to start seeing stars immediately and it took a few minutes for them to go away. I didn't get knocked out, but did get minor concussion. Looking at the helmet there is no deformation and still looks good, so I have been using it. Just think it might be a good to replace it but I don't see anything wrong with it.

What would you do?

Never was in super good shape and I'm 62 now and flat out don't have the energy to ride my old MB for longer periods. Plus I have health problems on top of that not the least of which is pain in my feet when I walk for longer distances. After 2 months using the old MB enough was enough.

I have three of them but one is a cheapy I bought for my wife in an attempt to get her to get in shape which is a fail so far because she's wrecked twice.

The one I bought originally I got at the ShotShow of all places. This was 3 years ago and I got it at dealer price and because I was already looking to buy one it worked out ok. The thing I learned is its not suited for going fast on out on the trails. I use it now for getting firewood because I have a trailer I hook up to it. It's a class 3 so its got lots of power and is fully suspended so this all does the trick. It's also a backup bike for friends and family to ride with me.

This one which is a Husqvarna Extreme Cross is more of a downhill E bike with 200mm suspension front and back. Within reason it doesn't seem to matter how fast I go or whatever I hit because this bike takes it. It's really crazy what it will do and I haven't had a bad wreck yet. NOT so with the "previous bike", I still have the scars. Its a class 1 bike so not as powerful as the other one but at the same time its 20 pounds lighter. I love this bike because of its refined "everything". It was worth every penny to me and am so glad I bought it!

I ignore the silly rules about not using ebikes on local trails. I like to take my dog which is also against the rules and go on weekdays to avoid crowds. Never seen a USFSLEO out there to date.

Edit - this bike was $7000 but if compared to the other similar quality EMTB class 1's costing MUCH more it was a bargain.

One fun thing I like to do is go fast uphill. Instead grinding my way up hill like I used to have to do I can go fast uphill and without killing myself.

No, it’s not for getting in shape. I’m in decent shape and plan to keep my analog bike as well. This is for just being able to cover more ground and down hill laps when I go out.

I have a buddy that let me ride one of his turbo levos. Was going way faster on trails and it made some stuff that is usually a bit boring way more fun.

Im just not sure how badly my jumping ability will be effected on the full power due to the weight. I may just go rent one of each and give them a try. All the trails here allow them.

I just want to continue to clear those 30ft tables and throw a little steeze in there along the way, haha.

Direct to consumer here in the states. Distributor in Colorado.

Do your research.
