How do the TBM and the 4-round systems compare in terms of fit and function? I have a PBR-XP with the 4 rounders, and it takes a bit of cajoling to get a loaded mag to seat. It's one thing about the rifle that I'm a little underwhelmed with.

Does the TBM work smoothly? Smooth insertion and a nice positive lock?

Thanks.</div></div>

Why does it take some cajoling to seat the mag? is the mag hitting somthing, is it just a tight fit. Sometimes DBM just needs to be fitted so it runs the way you want it to. No matter whos make it is. The TBM kit that I worked with ran very good. Smooth and positive lock & drop.

Re: Any news on the FN SPR bottom metal...

TDOW,

The DBM issue you refer to is likely the result of a latch tab that is positioned a little low. The front tab that is pressed out of the magazine body and the magazine catch grabs when inserted is too low on the mag body. Or more specifically, the end of it that must go past the end of the mag catch. This will result in a very tight fit for final insertion, or cajoling as you call it.

You may send the rifle back for inspection, or you could simply bias the end of the tab toward the top of the magazine slightly, maybe the thickness of the material difference. The stainless steel magazine body of the DBM mags is very strong and resists bending very well. A good pair of plyers would do the trick. Don't go too far, as this will result in a magazine that is not far enough into the receiver for reliable feeding. If you have more than one mag, try it on one to see if you get the results you desire before attempting it on the others. Also, make sure the bottom plate of the magazine is fully seated in place. Sometimes, if it has slid forward slightly, it will interfere with the bottom metal or stock and make insertion more difficult.

The TBM latches in a different manner and sticks below the stock and bottom metal, and therefore is a bit easier to insert. The magazine is not spring assisted for removal like the DBM, but is long enough with a wide enough bottom plate to grab, if the magazine does not fall free, as it usually does.

Hope this helps.

Re: Any news on the FN SPR bottom metal...

that is great for FN to release a TBM alas 5 years too late, I have 3 SPR and one with a CDI and a bunch of AI mags, if the FN mags fit the CDI and vice versa great, otherwise I don't want to buy more mags that are not interchangeable with what I have already.
question is can you use AI mags with this conversion or not??

cheers.

Sorry I didn't answer your question the first time. I would guess that it's pretty much as Action Guy described. The tab is a little low. I will try bending it up.

Re: Any news on the FN SPR bottom metal...

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I found some answers to the question of the difficult seating with 4 round mag in my PBR-XP.

I tried slightly bending the tab as Action Guy suggested, and lightly stoned it. I would say there was probably no difference in the ease of seating.

I bought a 2nd 4 round mag, which is different in several slight respects.

Old mag on left/new mag on right:

The new mag clicks in perfectly and feeds as well as the old one (no malfunctions at all so far).

I would guess based on a bit of peening in the front right corner of the mag, the bit they removed from there had a lot to do with it:

It's a little too shiny to see well.
