Suppressors Any OPS INC experience or opinions?

I am considering purchasing an Ops Inc 3rd Model PSS to mount on my Rem 700 5R mil-spec. Anyone have experience with this particular suppresor or with the companies other models?

I contacted an Internet dealer who said that they don't carry the brand because "Quality leaves a lot to be desired"

Is this just FUD because he doesn't carry it? or do you know of any real quality issues with Ops Inc suppresors?

There's a reason why Special operations and conventional snipers have been using them for years. They have in my opinion the best mount for a precision rifle out there, arguably the least POI shift and they are very quiet too, at least to my ears. I dont know DB reduction numbers for them though.

Anyone who says they lack quality is full of it up to their ears. Buy one you wont be disappointed.

Currently SOF is issued Ops and Knights, some teams buy Surefire or gemtech as well.

The mk13 for SOF has an sr25 can retrofitted to it
the m24 has been getting ops 12th and 3rd models for years
the mk12 obviously has been getting the 12th model for years and i dont see that changing.

The question isnt whether or not to buy ops, its which model is right for you. Ive been wondering the same between the 3rd model and the 12th model 30 cal.

Anyone with input on both would be appreciated. I have only heard the 12th model 30 cal.

I personally do not know a Ops Inc suppressor owner that wasn't totally happy with thiers. They might not have all the cool marketing or go out and make pistol and 22lr suppressors. They make one thing and they are really good at it.

I wonder what kind of suppressor your dealer was trying to sell you?

I have owned a number of cans, ops is not sexy, but it beats the hell out of eveything else I have used...so if "quality" is performance it rocks if "quality" is nice paint and cute little fake Mil TMs and FMs pretty boxes and fancy designs it lacks...but hell I am a function over form sort of guy.

mike- i use a 12th model on my spr(one w/the brake) and it is very accurate. it is also quiet as mr mos says, and frankly they increase the accuracy. get the one with the muzzle brake- i believe its the 12th. shooting unsuppressed you will notice a significant reduction in recoil b/c of the brake. hope this helps

I've got a Ops 12th on order, mostly from all the good reports I've gotten from those who own one, and cans from numerous other manufacturers.

Check www.silencertalk.com. Ops has a dedicated forum there.

Also, think about getting a 308 can so you can mount it to the 308 you will eventually buy / want suppressed.

I've had 4 and while I believe they are about the best you can have there are a few things to note that can make your choice a good one.

If you are looking to mount this on a DMR or SPR then the 12th model is a great system. Very acceptable accuracy and a good mounting system.

If you are mounting to a precision rifle either bolt or semi and have the barrel length, you should go with the 3rd model direct thread mount. No question.

I've run both on precision rifles .308 / .300WM and the 3rd model gets the nod for accuracy, durability and suppression.



I was the first OPS dealer when the cans were "Unregulated" and sent out of California and can tell you that the "Internet" dealer most likely has tried and failed at becoming an OPS dealer. So now they will try and push you toward there line.

As far as durability I have one of the first 15th models released to dealers and have more than 50K round through it. It survived 2 11.5" barrel changes and now rests on a 16" due to my relocation to the non friendly SBR state of Alabama.

While I sold my business in 2007, I know that OPS is not a sign and drive wholesaler. Ron is very selective on his dealers and for good reason.



I recommend Pennsylvania Defense Consultants (A bit of bias there

or ADCO who is now the largest OPS dealer.

I know that PDC is out of 3rd models and ADCO's web site also shows out of stock. I know that a batch of 3rd models is expected out of Ops though..


You wont be disappointed...

I have a 12th and will probably be soon buying a 3rd. "Quality leaves a lot to be desired" OMG, nothing could be further from the truth. These things are rock solid, and built like a brick shithouse. I suspect that is because they are sold mostly to the military types and realistically they are used hard, not maintained, and rode hard again. You won't be disappointed. Ron Allen is a top notch guy, and builds a kick ass product. I bought mine from ADCO, but had to go to Ron to get an M4 collar. He was very nice and supportive. I asked him if there was anything I needed to maintain the can, he said "put a little grease on the threads of the brake and shoot it, if you ever wear it out I'll fix it for you." Don't know if thats a company policy or he just knew I'd never wear it out....

I just am curious about the barrel collar. How exactly is this setup done to ensure the can sits concentric to the bore vs the barrel which isn't what you want? Is OPS over bored to prevent the chances of baffle strikes? Also I almost went with one of these cans, but the weight is what pushed me in another direction. I have always heard great things about them though. Might still try one for one of the bolt rifles.

I've got a 12th model in .223. The can will only be concentric to the bore if the threading is done concentric to the bore. It's like this with any maker's. The OPS collar is tapered and a pretty repeatable stop to index the can on the barrel. It is overbored, but I can't remember how much - and it's not a lot. It's a solid piece of equipment and even though it is a thread on, they are fairly fast. I've put about 1000 rounds through mine since I purchased it and am very pleased so far.

I agree that the threads have to be concentric to the bore, but say the threading is concentric to the bore but the OD of the barrel is not. Now that seems to pose a problem when you install the collar and the can. That is why I thought they might overbore more than others with that 2 point mounting system to cover an issue like that.

If that's a known situation, I'd replace the barrel.

Typically a 2-pt mounting system is better than a single pt (typical thread on) as two points of contact make the can MORE likely to be concentric to the bore, and also minimize the chance of a baffle strike should the can loosen during fire( as compared to a single pt mount)

The rear suppressor collar is utilized to stabilize the suppressor and prevent lateral movement as it is an over the barrel design.

The mount/brake is what will provide the alignment for the can. If your barrel is threaded incorrectly you will have problems as there is not much overbore.

I have seen allot of cans installed by the end user that had baffles or cans destroyed by incorrect mounting but only 1 OPS can where the end cap was struck due to a bad barrel.

Fortunately for the user the end cap was only slightly pushed out. I would think that most other cans would have had the end cap destroyed.


After you install the brake take the weapon out and put a few mags through it. Now closely inspect the brake and make sure you are not "kissing" the inside of the brake. What most people don't understand is this is where 90% of the problems start.

If your barrel is out of spec and a projectile is kissing the brake as it exits - it will almost never make it out of the can straight.

The poor mans method will also include looking through from the rear of the receiver with the can on. If you see any edges of baffle you will have trouble.


If you use a good quality SPR barrel I doubt you will have any issues. I've probably done close to a hundred uppers with barrels made by the military contractor, Compass Lake and White Oak Armament. None were ever misaligned-

I just always wondered how they set the barrel band up to be concentric, but it does not seem like you do other than relying on the barrel to not have any runout when being drilled. Good to know. Now when I am ready to build a MK12 upper I am prepared with all the info I needed.

I forgot to add that it also provides a point to index the proper amount of "thread to thread" contact with the suppressor to the brake.

If you would have the SPR profile shelf set back another 1/2" to 3/4" from the muzzle you would in essence either thread the can off the rear of the brake or actually contact the first blast baffle with the front of the brake. Neither would make for a good day.

The SPR profile shelf needs to be exactly 90* to the muzzle because the support collar has a shelf built into the collar that indexes off of the barrel shelf.

If the barrel shelf was indexed off of the 90* (crooked), when the rear of the can settles on the 20* taper of the support collar, the collar would index to the barrel taper (now crooked) and thus would cause lateral movement of the suppressor ending in a brake strike or baffle strike.

I didn't want to be dismissive about the importance or lack thereof with the support collar. Both the brake and support collar are used to properly index the can, but the brake being concentric plays a greater role.

Together the parts work together to make a great system.

The snipers in our BN use M24's with Ops Inc 3rd Model suppressors. They are happy with them but after showing me his data I wasn't as impressed as I could have been. A 5 MOA POI shift from suppressed to unsuppressed is alot. It's repeatable but it still is a big shift.

Seems to me you do want the OBVIOUS answer.

If your barrel is NOT concentric with your bore, ENUF to cause a baffle strike, its a piece of crap and should be thrown out. Its bent, buggered or broken. Chuck it.

The muzzle, the brake and the collar are all machined to be concentric to the barrel.

If that machining is good, and your barrel is good, yer good. If its not, yer not.

Garand from the massive amounts of crap I have read about suppressors I just never understood how the OPS cans setup with the barrel band. It just seems backwards to have a mount indexed off the bore but then the band index off the barrel. I guess when you profile down the barrel you can always contour it concentric to the bore. I have heard from gunsmiths that when cutting remington 26" barrels down to 18" or 20" that lots of times the bore is not nearly centered to the barrel. This is what I am gearing my questions off of.

It seems like a sweet idea for the two points of contact, but never knew if there was a way to guarantee the band to be concentric. I also didn't know that the band has to be done properly to make sure the can stops threading where it supposed to be. I have never seen the OPS in person, so I am curious how they set up. Now I have lots more info and will be prepared when it comes time to setup for the can.

Actually, what you've described is the preferred method for bolt guns, and Ops has a specific shop do that very work. I had that shop re-coutour a barrel for me, and it went from under 2" at 100 yards, to over 5" . So, IMO, even machining a barrel ain't no gurantee of nuthin.'

Basically, you gotta shoot it and see if there is a baffle strike (I always eyeball my barrel / can alignment before shooting the first time to observe any obviouos non-concentricity)


That said, the thread on brake and collar on barrel method also works.

A good amchinist will be able to tell if the collar, bore, barrel, brake or anything else is out of line. For a more technical explanation, a qualified machinist would be the ticket.

Right, for those who were wondering if its "over bored" I would say no. This is one of the tightest bores in the industry. It is also a straight bore not a taper. Keep that in mind for you FA types.

Having said that, i also think their tight bore is what makes them sound so good. Anyone know what the 3rd model meters?
