Just curious.

Anyone else out here in the Job?
I'm heading over to the US at the end of the year, would love to maybe try and get some time on road, even get some work in on the slim chance they'd accept me (i'd be full qual'd in pretty much all my drugs/procedures by then.

So if there's anyone in here who works as an EMT or Paramedic give us heads up. Would be pretty good to hear from you.

Was is it you're looking to know exactly? Employment/intern opportunities? That all depends on where you're looking to land and who's hiring at the time.

There are lots of volunteer outfits out here in the northeast that you can get some "hands on" time with but sadly you won't be getting compensated for your efforts.

I was never too much into the medical side of things but my job requires us all to be EMTs so they paid for us to get certified.

Good luck.

Looking for companies to contact (seems a bit more complicated than our system here of "one state, one provider"). Ideas on employment or registration (is there a union or registering body like there is for Nurses that would be contactable for something like this?)

I'm happy with not being paid for a day or two on road, i just want to see what it's like. I love my job (even though i'm still 2/3 the way through the Uni degree) and i couldn't think of anything i want to do more, and we don't get paid for the mandatory on-road days we do as part of the course. But it'd be amazing to experience the way things are done on the other side of the world.

Well I can only speak for this part of the country being that I've never worked anywhere else. If you're looking to learn and hone your craft, other than the battlefield, there is probably no better place to practice emergency medicine than in NYC.

FDNY EMTs/Paramedics are probably some of the best in the business when it comes to experience treating traumatic injuries. And if you land a spot with them, you'll get paid and have an oppotunity to take a promotional exam for firefighter.

FDNY EMS

Just be advised that to work in the state of NY or just about anyplace in the US you're going to need a certification from the department of health of that particular state. It isn't just one governing body. Every state has their own protocols and governing agencies so things vary from state to state.

I worked as a paramedic for about 10 years then moved on to full time military medicine. If I remember correctly there are about 45 states that require and/recognize the National Registry of EMTs. Most states will require you to have registry and all require a state certification. Every state has different requirements. I can agree that the larger cities will provide more experience due to call volume alone. I've worked in large cities and had my share of the gun and knife clubs and work smaller towns surrounded by large highway systems that gave me more experience with vehicle accidents. I believe I learned more and gained more experience with my first job where I was 45 mins from the closest hospital anyone can be a medic with a hospital 10 mins away.

That's kind of a loaded statement. I would have to say in the larger cities where the FD doesn't provide the 911 responses private services can be a joke.

The only time a worked for a private service was the first 3 years I was a paramedic. All of the surrounding services required the EMTs and Medics to be 23 years old. There were several of us whom had no choice but to work for a private service. Myself and 3 others all eventually moved to flight services and are or had very successful careers in EMS.

There is too much variance state to state and county to county to give any meaningful information. Your best bet is to decide where you are headed and then contact the EMS agency in that state.
