Rifle Scopes Any reason not to upgrade Leupold 10X to SS 5-20

Re: Any reason not to upgrade Leupold 10X to SS 5-20

Not exactly sure where in Texas you are, but SWFA is in Red Oak, right off I-35E. Drop by if you get a chance and look at the 5-20... you will wonder why you still have the Leupold!!

Because it is a slippery slope. It won't be long before you are justifying "upgrading" to a NightForce, USO, or S&B.

If you do upgrade, sell it before you need to purchase another rifle for it to sit on.

The only reasons I can think of are… the Leupold can be mounted lower and it is also a little lighter weight and more compact.

If those are not issues for you, buy the SS. I have only owned one Leupold that I can say came close to the overall glass quality of the SS, it was a pre mk4 long range M3. The two SS’s I have are head and shoulders above the MK4’s I have owned.

+1 to this.

I went from the 10x SS to the 5-20. I definitely needed a higher cheek weld with the bigger objective. The 5-20 is heavier and bigger. Would I go back, no but lighter and lower is nice.

Are they that good? Not having seen one its hard to imagine

They get excellent reviews (SWFA SS). They are as good as my Sightron SIII for a lot less. I'm going to put one on a custom rifle and see what happens.

Re: Any reason not to upgrade Leupold 10X to SS 5-20

Stay with the Leupold fixed 10X with the premier reticle. The fixed 10x is a simple design as well as durable since less moving parts. Simple is better. 10X seems like it will do well in a lot of ranges so you should be good to go. Just my opinion.

Re: Any reason not to upgrade Leupold 10X to SS 5-20

Captnavair, I have a Leupold Mk4 4.5-14X50 M5 FFP on my TRG, I believe it's a great scope and I like the way it functions and is as clear and bright as many other top scopes. Now having said that; I took advantage of the $250 discount on the SWFA SS 5-20X50 and got one. I'm very impressed with the rugged feel of this scope yes it heavier then the Leupold, sure the power is higher on SS when compared with my Leupold but what I'm comparing is the function of the scope, it's tracking accuracy and lastly the glass. I can tell you that it's right up there with the Leupold and I will go one step further and say it even somewhat better than my Leupold. I think at around a $1000 for the SS is a no brainer. The few negative remarks made by those that have reviewed the SS so far state that they are of no consequence and should not stop anybody seeking a great bargain in a scope.
