Chad Dixon is putting together a 40xb trainer for me and I'm trying to save some money by using parts that I have lying around and a Weaver 20 MOA base and their "tactical" 6 screw rings. They seem to get decent reviews with centerfires, andI'm thinking since there's such mild recoil and short ranges involved they should be fine, but does anyone have a reason why I really ought to fork up for a better mounting system? And I couldn't give two rat shits if it scratches the scope, it's not top dollar either.

The 'good' mounting systems you refer to have their main advantage in their rugged durability. If your rifle is subjected to rude handling, they are a real blessing.
A 'range queen' that shoots from a prepared position and travels in a hard case is not usually going to encounter the rude handling where such upscale mounts excell.
None of my rifles have 'hardened' mounting systems, and I just don't seem to have done them any harm so far. I would never completely rule out such a possibility, but the prospect does not cost me any sleep.
I use Weaver rings and bases a lot.

Nothing wrong with the Weaver mounts, in my opinion. I have used the Weaver "tactical" rings on everything up to 50 BMG, and I've never had a problem with them.

I hear you on spending big bucks on bases. I have gone with the DNZ stuff on almost everything, they have not needed any lapping yet and have held up to some pretty heavy abuse on my centerfires. They have a 30 and 20moa set that would work for you without breaking the bank. You can find them most places for about $70.

I would test-fit your particular scope in those six-screw rings before putting any money down. The extra length front-to-back of those rings may limit the amount of eye-relief you have in regards to how far back or how far forward you'll be able to get your scope. Probably won't be a problem with 95% of scopes but they may not work with the odd IOR or even an illuminated S&B.
