Hey guys, just wondering what your thoughts are on posting up available positions that you know about in various industries. The reason I ask is that I'm pretty bored with my career and want to change things up a bit, but not everything is posted on Indeed or Monster. I figured that with so many people represented from across the United States, it might be a good way for people looking for hires and people looking for a job to connect.

I'm currently a district sales manager and have been looking to change up my career. Strongly considering going into the military for a term, but still working on convincing the wife of such a drastic lifestyle change (plus she thinks it will be all fun, games, and excitement for me and that's why I want to do it). I don't want the excitement of joining to be because I am unsatisfied with my current job, so I agreed to my wife's request that I start looking for alternative jobs first.

I would love to have a sales or management job (I have experience in both) in the shooting industry working for someone like McMillan, Sig Sauer, Cadex, Vortex, etc etc. Just figured I would post this up here and see where it went and if others would find this useful.

Honestly... not sure there are many employers here. Really.

Good idea. But I am not sure people are here looking to pick up contractors or staff at anything beyond a very tiny rate.

I'd like to be wrong. Because there are some really great an honorable folks here. But not sure we could support a jobs thread beyond a very tiny percentage.

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

I know of a few, ArmyJerry is one. Regardless, there is a huge network here. Just last week I posted that note about all the cops in one town quitting nd they were looking. There's 3-4 jobs right there. If word got out people in the industry could come here looking knowing they have sort of a pre screened group. I would.

That's what I figured. And if people are moving to a new state and are looking for work then this is sort of an extension of the state hookup section. I'll check into that Daniel defense position and see if it's still there.

When we moved back home to the real Hide this was one of the suggestions for a new forum area, along with Maggot 's suggestion of a "Men's Health" section.

I'm one of those guys with an unconventional resume who tends to find work based off of personal contacts rather than job announcements. In some ways I'm jealous of guys who can tell you what their career is or who can go on Monster and look at specific job fields. I'm in my 40s and seriously considering diving into something totally new for me with an apprenticeship in a local shipyard just to have a documented skill certification.

I wonder why nothing ever came of that suggestion? I think both topics are valid for us here.

More skill sets are always a good thing but Ive found the best work is that which you create for yourself.

I need to shit or get off the pot.

I appreciate you keeping an eye out for that. Their website says they don't want resumes for unopen positions so I wasn't going to send anything over to them until something opens up.

I'm reminded of those really cool ads for men of adventure in Soldier of Fortune in the Seventies. I've always wondered if anyone found employment through those.

I remember those. One of my favorite old issues of SoF had an article about Vietnam vets who were working "shoot on sight" anti-poaching contracts in Africa. I a,ways thought that would be the greatest job on earth. I recently got tapped for some anti-poaching work over there, but the landscape has changed quite a bit and there were some pretty serious questions that couldn't be answered to my satisfaction.

I'm no ninja, but SoF employment adds would be the closest thing to "Monster" that listed jobs I could show qualifications for.

Yea I've got a bachelors in business and 4.5 years as a district sales manager/specialist under my belt. Finally getting to that 5 year mark which seems to be what a lot of businesses call for; just trying to find one open enough to the overall experience in sales and not so focused on their industry. Thought about going into mortgage/banking since my business degree was finance, but I have no actual banking/finance experience.

Thought about joining the military or reserves and doing finance or logistics manager as an officer but I need to get my future planned out a bit more before I make a decision like that. I would probably use that as an excuse to get my wife to let me join and then do what I actually want to do which is combat rescue (CRO), haha.

Also, it would more than likely be a pay cut from where I am at now which I would trade off for the ability to serve, but if it gave me a market advantage in the long run I would enjoy it. The problem is I'm not sure there is any advantage showing 5ish years of military experience over adding 5 years to my professional resume unless I was applying to a military minded business.

A dear friend and mentor told me, many years ago,

    "Follow the path with heart."

What is it that you love to do, if money and training were not an issue? Figure that out and follow that path. Understandably, you have a wife (and family) which must be considered, but if she's a good woman she will back you. You may not get rich but you will come home happy at night and sleep well. Thats worth a fucking lot, brother.

I did that years ago at a junction i my young life. I was looking for work and came across a guy hiring firewood cutters. I thought "Man I always loved going out and cutting the wood with grandpa and pop." That got me into the timber industry as a timber cutter. I worked in Arizona, Montana, and Virginia. One day I realized I was burnt out on that and started looking. I ran into a stonemason and thought " Ive always loved rocks, Ill give this a try." Had a successful career as a stonemasonry contractor, and loved most of it.

Now Im a broken up, retired, asshole who hangs out spouting shit on websites.

"Follow your heart.", youll never regret it.

I'm a director at my company and have to expand my team by 3 in the next couple of months. Not paying a shitload of money, but 65-70k or so is what prospects are looking at to start. It's a demanding job though, and everyone is always on call. I had to carry a sat phone in Alaska everywhere even though the signal out there was surprisingly good.

Luckily I run my shit pretty solid so it's rare that I do have to stop banging my wife to handle something, but it has happened.

Thinking about getting out of Texas for Alaska though, so my position might be available, too!

Shot you a PM also. I too have had to stop on the downstroke to answer a call out, but that divorce has been final for quite some time, so I'm good for another one.

bogey, go to welding school, a good community college...
buy a truck and outfit, incorporate and i hope your pockets are big enough

Funny you say that. I've always regretted not persuing my certs in welding. The shipyard apprenticeship I'm looking into has a few options, so I talked to a buddy who used to work there and is now a gypsy contractor making an insane fortune when he decides to work. He's recommended that among the fields available that I choose pipe fitting. He's already pulled together a full set of pipe fitting tools for me for free should I need them. The apprenticeship takes on new guys once a year and is heavily weighted towards veterans, which helps. The downside is that I'm already mid 40s and have to consider if I'm too old to be the FNG in a field like that. I'm currently inclined to apply for it and make my decision if I'm accepted. In the meantime that same buddy and a machinist friend of mine are doing some great side work for extra cash when they choose to take a month or two off from real work, so we're discussing my starting an unofficial apprenticeship with them doing some scut work in the shop and seeing if it's something I can devote myself to.

    boug,
if you chose the welding field, choose the specialty that pays the best and has the most work available to you, IN YOUR AREA...
IE, i always heard to underwater weld, do this do that, but i made sometimes twice what they did, had more work AND never a layoff...
own your own company, have momma do the books and typing and never owe money, pay as you go. start with a good mobile rig.
in a day i could be welding fry baskets for hooters then a misc dump truck repair then to the junk yard and then to a flour plant...
everything needs welding and the small jobs net more...
if you ever need to talk to someone about the business i would be happy to help out...
how to buy steel buy consumables
who do you buy beer for at the holidays
how to set up what type of truck...
i worked construction equiptment, specil fab, industrial repair, and what i called small shit, but, with a minimum, the small shit rocked
late 90s i had a 110 $ min, hit 6 45 min jobs in a metro area and go back to the shop and do filler...
its hard on you, but hell, what aint...everybody likes the welder

Thanks man, I sincerely appreciate that, I really do. Before the move I'd been looking at Votech programs for welding, since I always loved it but never had the formal education in it, just a lot of OJT with some old hands.
The big industry down by me is mostly maritime. The guys I know with welding, ship fitting, and/or pipe fitting certs are telling me that they're getting the most (and best paying) work on the pipe side of it. As a bonus they've found that because their pipefitting experience came in shipyards that they're highly sought after contractors even on non-maritime jobs.
A four year apprenticeship is no small consideration for me in my 40s, but I'm going to be 50 anyway, so if someone is willing to pay me to get the education then it might be worth it.

For sure, if someone will cover your education then definitely go for it. Never too late to start on something else, especially since it sounds like you know a lot of t already! Part of me would love to be in the trades to have some actual hands on skill work if the economy takes a tank again. My father in law in a master plumber and so is my brother in law and they have both offered me jobs through their companies. Unfortunately it wouldn't be until I owned my own business that I would make as much as I am making now unless I was working for a union shop and had some good experience under my belt.

if you are going to break your ass everyday and have a head to ya, it dont really matter what you do...get the dough, and dont listen to bull shit...
youre a champ bog, get the good smelling panties and the sack of cash, fuck the dumbshit and the meek...
