Please post a before (as is) and after pick! You having an A5 scope is the hot vintage set up.
Steve makes a good point. Make sure you know what the WHOLE 82A Sight Assembly looks like! Ask from who you are buying if it is a complete rear sight assembly. You see a lot of sights posted for sale that have been scabbed for the lower assembly or some of the components and they dont identify that. Its also common to see them looking complete, but missing just the detent springs. That really sucks..
And Dont forget the condition of dovetail base! Thats damaged a lot too!

oddly enough the bottom part of the sight in the dovetail is still attachted and the screws still move in and out so that half sight will work! Im tryin to find a camera to take some pictures.

I cleaned up the rifle with a brush and some hoppes, kept the patina and the originality of the rifle and it looks pretty good. I scrubbed out the bore and it looks bright and shiny! I'm going to shoot it on sat and I'll try and find the camera soon.

Let that patina ride. Something tells me it didnt get there overnight...
Besides, it aint gonna shoot any better and now you will have more corrosion maintenance than if you left it alone with a film of oil. Its real common, especially on the receivers of the early 52's for the blue to not hold up. It was the alloy of the receivers. It did not take to blueing very well and it flaked off. They changed the alloy later during the transition to B's to one that accepted blueing better.
If you scrubbed the barrel bare, you may have some extended plinking time coming before it reseasons and settles in for ya. So some patience and a butt load of lead will go a long way.

My 52C is roll stamped U S Property on the right front area of the reciever. Not vibro penciled on the left side. Most of the electric penciled marked ones have very unsigltly US Property markings as they were hand done.

Could you post a pick of the us property rolled stamp on your receiver? Also, do you have a das marked stock (stamp on bottom of grip) too?

Some of the electro pencil marked ones are done down right nasty. Thats where the "signed by the drunk monkey" comes from. I owned a -c- for a while that one of the previous owners tried to grind the electro markings off and ended up grinding a deep gouge in the side of the receiver! Yeah, thats much better.....? Every once and a while you see them where someone got the bright idea they could sand or polish it out too. Way rude, just leave them alone. They are what they are.

I found it at several places, OpticPlanet one of them. Have not tried it but it may work without drilling and tap the rifle.

In your travels among the 52 world do you know of anyone that has a Ken Viani Model 1 base for my 52? Right now that would be a less expensive option to get glass on it that getting into a Unertl.

You might think I'm crazy, but I think I used to own that gun. Is there ANY indication of somebody trying to fix that crack with clear accraglass or epoxy? Is there any handwritting in pencil or pen inside the barrel channel or under the trigger guard?
There are some distinct features shown in your pictures which tell me this gun may have been handed down to me from my uncle. If this is the same gun, I sold it back in 1983 to a gun shop in Pembroke, Mass, in trade for a 40 X target rifle.
I'm almost positive I sold it with the rear vernier installed.

The EGW will work fine. Its a rimfire that will spend its life going from the safe to a case, plinking, maybe some 3 position and benching right? The cantilever base is what is and will work for this. If mounted correctly, it will not be any problems.
Now, if you for some reason see your rimfire being handled rough or like a 30 cal military rifle, then go for the Viani.

I ordered a rail from EGW for my 52 D and it fit the rear two mounting holes just fine. It is cantaleavered over the rear. It was reasonably priced also.

I have an opportunity to pick up a pre A 52. What are the thoughts here regarding that vintage? Sounds like most of you are into the later models. I have another 52 that is with my father back east, though I've given up on ever getting that back during his lifetime. I don't know which 52 it is. Are they marked with an "A, B, C ect..." or is it based by the serial number? I'd like to find out exactly what mine is. All I know is it's a great shooter. Which is the reason I'm looking for another. Thanks.

I personally like them. Pre A's are very nice shooting, accurate vintage rifles. They set the standard in the 20's and 30's for competition target rimfire.
As long as you are realistic about the age and the condition of what you are shooting, they are impressive. They just make you work a little harder as the triggers are not as refined and the barrel technology is vintage. For me, that does not take away from the quality and fun of ownership, just be realistic about what it is. Ultimately, every generation of the 52 has good points. You just have to decide where you want to jump on.

If you are a person who is looking for the most accuracy you can get from a 52, the C's and E's are your best bet. But all other models have their merits too.

There is nothing better than owning and shooting a vintage old shooter. I have a 52A and a 52D both are great shooters, and because thay were of little interest to the purist collectors I got for a reasonable price.

ykrvak make sure you check the locking lug on the pre A for cracks, it is a fairly common malady. If it doesn't don't use the safety as it is one causes for the crack. See sticky on RFC win 52 forum.

ebay, gunbroker, rimfire central are all stock sources plus just google it, ya never know..
Good luck and let us know if you get it. If you do there are some good epoxies to fix it until you get a keeper stock.

Brer Rabbit made a good point about the locking lugs. If your buying it over the web and you cant inspect the bolt lug in person, ask that question specificlly in writing about the lugs and get close up picks of the lugs.

I got my 52C barreled action from the CMP. The bolt fit and headspaced great. Picked up a 52C trigger on Gunbroker and put it all together. Took it to the range this past weekend. It has promiss. Need to find the right ammo. All I had was RWS, it was ok, but the rifle should do better with different ammo. Thought it was very windy the day I was at the range. It may have been me, I'm a bit rusty from not shooting much since my heart surgerys. I'll post pics when I have it in it's own stock.

Thanks for the info guys! I really appreciate it. The gunsmith I'm having look at it says he conservatively rates it at 80% and the asking price is $550. I'll ask about the locking lugs and see what he has to say. Thanks again for the help.

I posted earlier on the 52C Sporter re-issue I had recently purchased. Found the right ammo about a week ago. It likes Wolf Match Extra. I shot off of a patio table using a Harris Bipod and rear bag at 50yds. The table has the stability of a folding legged card table and that said the 52 delivered less than 1/2" five shot groups with the smallest at .182. Amazing!

ykrvac. I just received a pre-A with speed lock. It was damaged in shipping but when I get it back together I'll post what it likes. If you go for the pre-A I suggest you don"t use the safety. Guys over at Rimfire Central that know these rifles believe that the use of the safety contributes the likelyhood of cracking of the receiver locking lug.

Here is the location of the stamp and the close up of it. I never heard of it till I traded for this rifle. Apparently there are very few out there. From what I understand it stands for Air Force Premium Grade.

Pillar bedding a 52D? I need to bed my 52D to correct a bedding job done by a previous owner. Has any here bedded a 52D? Since there is no recoil lug, I need advice on bedding the rifle. I have bedded a Rem 700, a Rem 40XB and a rem 540XR, so I have the basics down fairly well.

Any advice is welcome.

Nice Rig! Love the stock. Did you bed it yet?
All of mine are stock. My 52E International is factory bedded in the Al Freeland Stock, but I have never opened it up to check it out.

I have seen the pillars done first and then used to stabilize and locate the action for the bed operation in addition to a shim in the barrel channel.
I have also seen everything test fit for clearance and the whole job floated at once from just shims in the barrel channel.
Look forward to hearing what you ended up with.

I'm a 52 lover, missed this post early on , 56' civilian 52C and a 98' zanders HB satin 52C sporter re issue, Ive only had the re issue a couple 3 weeks but I am impressed with the gun, would not pay 335 for one new in the early 90's , it had made in Japan stamped on barrel ! LOL my how time changes thinking.

I love my centerfires but shoot these a lot more to quell the trigger finger itch. Both guns are amazing at 50 and 100 yards with good ammo, wind makes an ass of me at 100...

I love 52s! I shot a 52d while at collage but it belonged the school. When I finally had the cash I found a nice 52c repeater in a prone stock with a shorter target barrel. Not sure if it was redone or just shortened. I love shooting it as much as my Annie's. Steven

+1 on the 52E's. They are fine shooters. I kinda lucked out when I got mine. I bought it from the original owner.
Would like to see yours sometime. My E International is one of the early ones with an all maple laminated stock. Is your stock all maple or alternating maple and walnut (alternating light and dark wood)?
Al Freeland supplied all the stocks for the few Internationals that were produced. Just curious, but how do you know "Big Al" tuned yours.

Yeah it is a fantastic design. The action has a very characteristic, solid sound when it locks up. It have always been impressed with how well some of the older ones can shoot.
+1 on the federal tagrget. My older 52's grouped better with the gold medal target then the newer match ammos out there.

Also they all shoot cci std velocity amazingly well. That is the ammo I use the most in my 52's

She's in real clean shape. 500?? That is a flat steal for one in that condition! The Vianni mounts are nice. I would like to get one myself for the collection.

If by "wrong sights" you mean there was a Lyman Model 52S on the rear and a Lyman 77H up front( Front Lyman looks like it is still mounted)?
The Lymans were the Winchester factory offering.

Where did you find the KV mount?

I bought a Japanese repro when they were new (back in the early 90's?)and still love it! Its a sporter configuration but just is accurate as all get out. And I got some badass Conetrol mounts.

Would like to see those mounts sometime if you get the opportunity to post a pick here.
The sporter reissues are a sleeper and a solid dollar value. Very accurate and they have great ergonomics. I regret getting rid of mine to get another 52.

Count me in the 52 fan club.
Ken Viani made another run of mounts for the Win 52s early this year. I think those are all sold out but he may be collecting names for another batch.
