Just curious if anyone has seen objective coating chipping off a Halo 25mm?

I had already started a RMA for sending the unit in for an update to the software. When I got the unit out to package it up is when I noticed the cracking / chipping. I called in to NVision to ask if I needed to do anything to have it looked at, and they seemed like it was no big deal. Whomever I spoke with said they would add it to the current RMA and get it taken care of. As if right now they seem like it's no big deal. Just figured I'd see if it was an isolated thing or if others were seeing a similar condition.

I'll report back either way on how they handle it once they get it.

Hello @PlinkIt, we'll have to take a closer look at your objective lens. It's hard to say from the picture what is going on but we should know shortly.

@PlinkIt ... I know you actually USE your gear outside ... often !! :D

So, can you think of any possible relationship between use of the unit, the sorts of conditions that prevailed during use ? That might have impacted the coating? Like really cold temps ... or ice storm or otherwise ??

I assume it wasn't like that when you first got it ??

@Max_R I understand, it'll be in the mail to you guys on Wednesday. I'm curious what you guys figure out.

@wigwamitus I never noticed any imperfections in the objective before now, and I called myself being very observant of the unit when I first got it... The weather here has been great actually... We have barely gotten into freezing for the first couple times this year. I mean just enough to get frost. This unit was really only being used on an SBR lately to walk around the property. Shot a couple possums but that's about it. It normally stays in the house. I'd say the worst temperature shift has been going from the house at 70 degrees to outside at 35-40 degrees lately just for a quick scan across the cutover then back in the house.

Perhaps the repeated temp shift from In the house to outside was giving it stress?... Usually 1-3 times a night I will take it out and look around. Perhaps being 70*, then 40* for 20-30 minutes, then back to 70* for an hour, then back to 40* is giving it stress.

The spot originally showed as just a crack along the coating. Which I thought was something that needed to be cleaned off the lens. When I tried to run the brush across the lens is when it flaked the coating as you see now. There was no impact spot that I could make out just a crack in the coating I thought was hair or something to get off the lens.

Beats me...

Hum, don't see how 70F to 40F and back would be a big stress. So either materials issue or manufacturing issue ... Max will fix it ... I am sure !!! :D

Anti-reflective coating delamination is a known phenomenon but it should not be there. I'm really sorry this happened to your Halo. It sounds that it's a clear warranty case and the lens goes straight to the lens maker. You'll get your Halo back with a new lens. Usually, the delamination is due to the inappropriate handling/contamination of lens prior to coating but there may be other causes. The most frequent trigger for delamination is high humidity/water condensation/submersion in the water + temperature change.

Ok in my brain I'm guessing That the end of this statement relates to getting the unit wet basically and then freezing it? I can certainly see where that would cause damage!

I'm in Virginia... so humidity is so over the map, but always very high until we get into freezing temps. The worst I've seen condensation on lens before is when going from AC in the house to outside when it's 10-15 degrees warmer.... I'm not sure to what degree the humidity and temp changes could cause issue...?...

Thanks for any insight
The unit should be there Wednesday, and maybe you guys can shed some light on what caused it.

@PlinkIt I didn't mean to confuse you. There should be absolutely no delamination of the coating (scratches are OK, but it's a different story). If it's not the case, it's an indication of the problem regardless of the humidity, temperature changes, etc. No user should ever worry about such things.

I still don't know what they found out about what caused the chipping... But I said I'd report back on how they handle it

The unit finally made it to NVision today around 1:30 according to the carrier.

Less than an hour later I had a tracking number for a replacement unit!

I don't think it's possible to get a faster turn around than that!

Absolutely fantastic to hear how this is being handled.

Sort of related .. I asked @Max_R about the warranty when these came to market. He basically said the units have a 5 year unconditional warranty based on what one would consider as normal wear and tear. I specifically called out the SCAR17 known brutality on optics - he said it was tested, and covered. Great to see a vendor that stands behind their product. Two thumbs up.

@car16smg you may save up to 4 reticle zeroes and types for use on different weapons. Under the Reticle Menu select individual Reticle # for each weapon and zero. I hope you'll like your Halo-LR.

@PlinkIt @CBDR I'm afraid that we are not going to know for sure what caused the chipping. There may be a number of reasons and all of them are the responsibility of the lens manufacturer. The important part is for the lens manufacturer to ensure that it doesn't happen in the future. We are working very closely with them (it's easy because they are in New Hampshire and we are in Massachusetts) to figure out what might have happened. Sorry, I know that it's really vague but it's the best I got.
