Anyone a USMC recruiter or prior one?

I doubt they have changed tactics in the past 30yrs, so they get quotas to fill and push those over the desired MOS of the recruit. Stick to what the recruit wants, threaten to jump to another branch, and I bet a slot of the desired MOS opens up. Anything like bonuses, MOS contact, etc gets in writing before shipping. Trust no promises for after the fact. I did recruiter's assistance way back in the day and this was the mantra. I doubt much has changed.

No, that's not how it worked. Recruiters work hard to get the applicant into the field they desire, it's how you make and solidify the sale, but there isn't always slots available for the FY in what they want. I went to the Ops Chief more than a few times when we had nothing available to our RS that someone wanted and he did some hog swapping with another district to get what my guy wanted.

Never once were we ever told to "get more to sign up for xxx", closest to it was we were directed to not actively prospect for females in the midst of the wars because they couldn't fill combat arms rolls. At that time the Corps was capped at 12% female, and we had tapped that one out by far.

Biggest thing to remember with USMC MOS selection is there's never a guarantee to get a specific MOS, only the occupation field and the Corps assigns the MOS according to needs and qualifications from there. I'd get requests like "I want to work on F-18s" and I'd explain to them I could get them aircraft maintenance which would put them on a flight line with a wrench, but it could be working on anything from a C-130 to a Huey to a F-18.

Bonuses? Hen's teeth...

Redman’s post is accurate, my tour was from 17-20 in northern Virginia, 4th district. As long as my kid met all the qualifications I’d find him a spot in the field they wanted or go to war with the command until they did.

Maybe not when you served, but 10yrs prior to your time. That's how it went where I did the lance criminal escape from 29 palms! LOL

How old are you OP?

What was the lowest ASVAB you ever saw? A buddy of mine scored a 9.
Lowest I had was as low as they go, a fucking ONE. I was SNCOIC then and it was a Haitian guy with a BA degree from FGCU that my fresh on the streets recruiter was chasing to pop his cherry. My recruiter told me what he got and I told him to drop him off at home and burn the card on him, because to get that low he either tried to answer every question wrong or he really was that fucking stupid. Either way, he was a waste of time.

Answering the same letter for every question typically yields an 8-12 AFQT.

I was blown away with some of the Mexican recruits who couldn't speak English. One didn't even know what year it was. One of about 6 of those guys graduated. I thought to myself, "What shitty fucking recruiters!"

Here is the biggest recruiting FUCK YOU MARINE CORPS story. So here I was a former Sergeant USMC. Got out and got my college degree in 2004. Went into the poolee OCS program. Scored 92 on the ASVAB. I could go anywhere ground combat option. However, I was a white male, and the BELOVED SEMPER FI "Always Faithful" Marine Corps said I couldn't be a Marine Officer because I was a white male. There were 4 of us prior service Marines ready to hit OCS and the recruiter called some "Kernel" and that guy chewed out the gunny that set up the speaker phone call. We heard, "We need women & minorities, not anymore white males!" The phone hung up and the gunny said, "Look around the room at all these posters and what do you see? All women and minorities. DEI before it was called DEI.

Dude, even back in 2002 there was a quota for minorities and women in the officer corps. White males in our area were closed out by January (FY based). Shittiest Lieutenant I ever had in my career (I was a GySgt by then) was a quota-filler...and prior Air Force enlisted at that.

Not so for enlisted. I could enlist every turd that came my way as long as they were qualified. However the biggest misconception is that all of the kids were idiots. Unless some other recruiter had a workaround that I didn't...65% of my contracts had to score 51 (average) or above on the ASVAB.
