I recently purchased a Savage Ashbury 6.5 creedmoor, still waiting on it to show up at the FFL. I was a little surprised that there is basically no information available on them. Just curious if anyone had any experience with one?

Basically what happened is I sold all of my bolt rifles this winter and planned on primarily shooting a Bergara LRP this year. When it showed up I really didn't like the feel of the chassis. With it finally being spring here in Ohio, I really didn't have the time or desire to order a new chassis and needed a rifle I could get ASAP. I remember checking an Ashbury out somewhere last year and really liking the chassis, but thinking there is no way I would pay that type of money for a Savage. I found one cheap enough I felt it was worth trying out.

i have 2 chassis, and they are great. get the thinnest fore end you can because they can get front heavy. i think the sport is actually lighter then the carbon fiber.
ive beat one in 20-30 below and it took it with out a hiccup. the savage part of it is note in my wheelhouse.
they do good work and are good customer service, they jumped through hoops for some small things i needed.

It will be coming with the standard hand guard. Can they be swapped with any ar-10 or just APO branded ones? That may not even be a problem, I actually prefer a heavier rifle.

I really liked the chassis, which that and the price is the only reason I took a chance with a savage.

I also have a Luth mba-3 and Magpul PRS buttstock to try out on it. The one that comes with it seems more suited for an AR-15

I just bought one here, I won't tell you how little I paid for it. I'm waiting on my DMR II and Spuhr to show up to go wring it out but initial impressions are good, very good. I got mine used (barely) and the bolt lift is surprisingly light, dare I say on par with my Bighorn TL2 that I put side by side and cycled the bolts on both to compare. The bolt lift is hands down better than any Salvage that I have ever owned and I have owned a lot of Salvages but you can still feel the grit when cycling the bolt, the grit doesn't slow me down and despite intentionally trying I haven't been able to get the bolt to bind. I have been dry firing the rifle for the last 4 days and cycling the bolt on every dry fire and I can already feel a difference in the grit, I'm going to spend some time polishing this pig and I think it will be pretty slick. I'm NOT a fan of the Magpul CTR for a bolt rifle and have a PRS stock in my pile of extra shit so I will probably go buy a rifle length gas tube and install the PRS. The folder mechanism is pretty well designed and with a bolt mod I think I can flip it over and make a right side folder, more to come on that. The biggest thing that I like about mine is that despite Savage calling it a Model 10 APO it is actually a model 12 target action with the solid top, the solid top target actions are quite a bit more rigid than the open top actions.

Good to hear, I was planning on maybe doing some polishing too, but being mine isn’t here yet I don’t know how it will feel. Seems to be hit or miss.

Do you know if the action is a small shank or large. I am already looking into proof and criterion prefit barrels. If I like the action and chassis well enough I might rebarrel it sooner than later, haven’t really heard anything on the factory savage barrel.

@Dirty D - Glad to hear you're liking it so far. Now I know I could have asked more for it :). In any case, it's gone to a good home that will shoot it a lot more than I would have.

That scope & mount setup should be great on there. Please post back up results when you get it out to the range.

All of Savages target actions are large shank so I am ASSUMING this one is but I haven't put calipers on it yet to confirm.

Not really, I am fully aware of the shortcomings of most Savages and had already decided that if I didn't really like it I was just going to cannibalize the chassis for my Stevens 200 action that is so worn in it is slick as snot, now that I have my hands on it I am impressed so far. Savage and APO have done a great job of putting together a great little rifle and an even better job of hiding it.

If this little bastard shoots well I'm going to have to publically apologize to LowLight for trolling his review of the Savage Stealth and I hate apologizing to anyone taller than me.

Take a look at the butt stock options from XLR. I went with an XLR tactical on my Stealth and I would buy one again in a heartbeat. Easy to customize and fit your specific shooting position.

What is everyone's recommendation on scope base and rings. I am debating swapping the base out for a 20 moa, or getting a 1 piece mount that has 20 moa built in. Does the action on the Ashbury require a different base than a normal Savage 10? I will be using an optic with a 34mm tube and 50mm objective, what would be the height needed to clear the hand guard?

Take a look at my review, hope some of the tips will help. I love my 308 and will strive to use factory rounds to push close to 0.5 MOA at 100y
