I am looking at buying a Springfield 1911 and am not very familiar with them. The seller says it is an older model, it looks like bone stock milspec type (dark finish/black grips), and the serial is NM7XXX. He says it has had a new extractor installed and is a good shooter.

Is this something that could possibly be collectable or should I approach it as "if it goes bang it's worth X dollars" ??

    There is ZERO collectibility there.

The Springfield 1911s with NM prefixes are marked Geneseo IL on the frame and are slightly more American-assembled than the N prefix guns which are slight more Brazilian-assembled.

All Springfield 1911s start in Brazil. *booing sound*

I called springfield and it's a late 80s standard model, blue book says ~400 guy wants 600 (also I think he may have worked on it himself and that worries me too). I'm thinking I'd rather spend a bit more and get a newer model with the features I want.

$600 is definitely a lot more than I'd pay for a basic bone stock Mil-Spec with questionable history. There's a LOT of other much better new/used 1911s you can get for $600.
