Anyone hunting with Mcmillan A5?

Have always loved the A5 like most do. Getting ready to purchase a top of the line stock for my hunting/ long range shooting rig in 7mm Rem Mag. Still debating between an A5 and an A3-5 as it is a pound lighter. Just love the look and feel of the A5 a bit more, not a fan of the squared out forend of the A3-5 despite the weight savings. Planning on a Medium Palma contour barrel.

Just wondering if anyone using the A5 as a LR hunting/target rig. I know its going to be in the 13-15 pound range fully loaded either way. Post pics if you got em!

I run an A3-5 on my 260 and love it for long range, & yes, it makes a good pronghorn rig, a good gun for open spaces. Wouldn't want to pack it for woods hunting though. Open county for deer it works quite well too, at least for my part of the country.

I use several different A-5's for groundhogs, prairie dogs, and coyotes. Like you, I like how the A-5 feels. Works good for me.

I have two A-5's that I use for groundhog and target shooting. I agree with you that they are great stocks, but I believe they would pretty heavy for distance hunting. Good luck.

I would be using this for a little bit of everything. Even Colorado Elk hunts. Air is thin in the high country, lots of walking too. I might regret it then, hopefully not! If you guys have any pics of your A5's as you hunt with them you oughta post some pics!

See if you can get it in the Edge fill - that might make it light enough to tote through the mountains......

I have the McMillan Game Scout on my hunting rifles. It is a nice blend of the different McMillan styles. Easy to carry and easy to shoot.

I carry mine to the deer stand and have no issues with it. You need to configure your stand/bling to avoid offhand shooting if at all possible, as the shakes can set in it you're waiting on that perfect shot. If using a portable climber, attach a rope and pull the big bastard up once you're fully settled in. Reverse process to come back down.

I use a A-5. Its a Rem 700, MTU @24" and comes in @18.3. Its not something that I have to carry much, either a snowgo, 4-wheeler or side-by-side does the carrying. I don't think I would want to carry it mile after mile. I hunt with a Manners msc-t have 2, love them. Have you looked at a Game Scout or Game Warden, they both have nice pistol grips like the a-5.

The A-5 is great for prone work but I like my A-3 Adj much better for walking and stalking, it's less clunky and lighter.

As for using the MTU contour.. I would be using a Medium Palma contour at 24". Not sure how much weight that would save? 18.3 pounds would definitely be a fat pig to carry though. Function over form but I'll be damned, something about the A-5 tickles my fancy.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have an A3-5 that I use for target shooting and some groundhog but for wood hunting I decided to go with the adjustable Game Scout which I think is a good compromise between a hunting and tactical stock saving around 1# of weight.

I just checked McMillans website, I guess I missed where it says the A5 can be made as light as 2.5 pounds. Not sure if that is different fill related, or no adjustable cheek piece and no adjustable lop. I'll call and find out. 2.5# is not bad at all.

What I can tell you is it works. I don't know if I would build what I have as a walkabout rifle. I like the A-5 fell. I am glad that I don't have to carry the pig. Took her out on a 55 mile snowgo ride today. I say go for it. As posted above there are options to keep her light. Edge fill, proof barrel, lighter weight scopes. I like what I have and it kills shit.

Build it, you'll like it.

I've put many miles on in western SD with my sendero in a McMillan a5 riding in my eberlestock. It's not the lightest rig but when you need to make that longer shot I wouldn't want anything else.

Bighorn action, McMillan A5 with Edge Technology, Hart 6.5 Lapua barrel, contoured like a Remington VS that I turned all dimensions down by .050. 1.200 shank and .780 muzzle at 25". Saves .5 lbs. and fluted by me and saves another .5 lbs. 2 oz muzzle brake by me. Jewel trigger and NSX 5.5 X 22 Scope. Ready to roll at 10.5 lbs. A joy to carry and shoot.

Had an EDGE A5 on my GAP .243 and 7WSM, a bunch of years ago. That was a very nice stock, and I took both rifles hunting a bit. But, after trying a few different stocks & chassis, found a fondness for the ergos of the A3. The sloped buttstock of the A3 allows for faster/easier vertical adjustment in the field. Just slide the rear bag forward/back to lower/raise POA. The A5's butthook & flat bottom is great for level/bench shooting, but leaves something to be desired while prone shooting from field positions. Least it did, for me...

Although the squared off A3 forend is not an ideal fit for shooting stix, it is a better than tryng to wedge the fat beavertail of an A5 into the cradle of traditional stix. And the flat sides of the A3 forend surely allows for a better mating to a Hog/Pig saddle type clamp mount, if that's what you use...

The Micky GameScout has that same sloped rear end & pistol grip of the A3, but mated to a more slim forend. Saves weight & the 'classic' forend fits most shooting stix very well.
My 'hunting' rifles have GameScouts, and other precision rifles have A3s. Its nice to grab any rifle and have that same sensory relationship with the grip & buttstock.

In my hunting circle I don't know anyone with anything but a A5, A3, game scout, warden, EH1. But maybe I have weird friends, LOL. I had a 284 on an edge fill, medium palma 26, adjustable hardware, NF 5.5-20, Believe it came in at 12 pounds? Current preference is a EH1 or the game warden with a light palma, still a nightforce, these are in the 9.5-10-5 range

Well thanks for sharing all that guys! Honestly, my perfect stock is an A5 with a slightly smiller forend. That big old beavertail is a touch excessive in my opinion. The A3-5 does the trick but like I said, that ugly squared forend makes me gag! I believe with 99% certainty that I will be ordering an A5 with the "edge" fill. I wish you guys woould throw up some pictures!!

10.5 without the bipod. Bipod add about 3/4 lb. Not to bad as the bipod is quick release, so I usually carry it in my cargo pocket.

338 Edge 28" barrel....totally agree with having a sloped bottom of the stock for adjustments. Rifle has been all over Alaska and Wyoming on my back, Tools are heavy.

I should add that the adjustable comb is useless and would not do that again(hard to keep clean) in favor of the cheap plastic version.

Why is the adjustable comb useless and hard to keep clean? I have never seen an A5 where the comb height is not raised 1/4" to half an inch!

Agree, I always have to raise mine almost 1/2 inch, without it it's impossible for me to get a sight.

Ok, I shouldn't say useless but the same can be accomplished with the Karsten Kydex cheek piece. For me the added hardware in the stock has to be protected from the elements and we are talking about a hunting rifle subject to rain, snow etc.. Not debating the need to raise the comb height.

I own 2 of these stocks and it's just something I decided I didn't need along the way.

I hunt p-dogs with the A-5. Love the feel, but it's holding an m24 profile barrel and NF NXS and I would want to lug it around very far. Wouldn't mind one with Edge fill for a hunting rig by any means.
