I've been playing on the Geocaching web site and it looks like something fun to get into.

I've noticed there are a lot of cache's in my area (and we don't have very many people).

Seems interesting, and another excuse to get out and about in the woods.

Anyone have any experience in Geocaching? What are your thoughts.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

while I was a Drill at Benning a buddy told me about this. we went out one hole day around the local area. found 4 sites that didnt have anything at them and 2 that did, a litle braided bracelet and the other was a Alaska keychain. I believe the idea is if you take something you are supposed to leave something, guess thats what didnt happen at the 4 other spots. Anyway it really was a fun day with the wife and little boy.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

When I was a Scout Master we did it quite a bit. Its a lot of fun everyone from my 7 year old daughter up to my 17 year old scouts enjoy it.

What would be fun is a geocach shooting match where you had different point you had to find and then find your targets and engage them from each point.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

Last hunting trip I went on we stumbled upon a cache and I had never had any experience with them so I had nothing to leave. We ended up camping there and left them a nice sturdy fire pit with a note in the log book. I tried tracking the log online but nothing has been posted. I have since noted some caches in my notebook to look out for when Im on the trails. It helps make an unsuccessful hunt a little more interesting. Once my kid is a little bigger I plan on getting more into it for sure.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

I have been doing some of this with my 5 y.o. He refers to it as "treasure hunting" and has a blast at it. A perfect excuse to go do something outside together. There are far more of them around here than I would have ever figured...

I did a little bit of it when I was 12. Relatives bought me one of those $90 garmins. I had fun, but at the time I couldn't drive and there were only I think five caches near me. Bugged me when people didn't follow the give and take policy.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

This past Saturday I instructed the Merit Badge GEOCACHE Class with some Boy Scouts. Of the 8 young men that were present, 3 wanted to be there. 1 seemed like he would be a good kid if he can find good peers to be around. 2 of them were too young for the class to hold their attention and 2 of them need their butts whipped every morning just for GP. It was fun being around the young men that wanted to be there.
Several years ago I hid a Cache off some hiking trails on the Blue Ridge Parkway. 60+ people found it and posted. A Park Ranger started seeing people leave the main trail and got suspicious. He snooped around until he found it. A lady hiker who had also found it saw the Ranger come out of the woods with the cache. The way she described it, the Ranger was pretty ticked about it. Oh well, at least 60 + people were able to find it and all said they enjoyed it.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

I started geocaching with my girlfriend about a year ago and have nothing but good things to say about it. It can bring you to some really cool places that you wouldn't otherwise go. I even found another place to shoot while out geocaching once.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

There aren't many around where I live but its fun. Always wanted to hike to the top of a mountain near me and put one there. There is one near me that is actually pretty complicated. Its a rock with a hole drilled out and a bolt in it so you can put things inside it. There are few others like that too. Some are coins glued to rocks that you have to find.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

I just started about 2 years ago just as a reason to get out of the house and because of it I have "discovered" some seriously beautiful scenery that I didnt know was there.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

My wife and I are also into geocaching. Its fun and addictive.

If you go to geocaching.com, enter in your zip code, it will come up with a huge list of caches in your area. If you click the link near the top of the page "map this location", you'll see all the caches on a google maps view.

My wife has hidden her first cache she calls "jewelry box"
where she stached some of her bead bracelets she made.
look it up at N 34 41.003 W 118 09.742

You dont have to buy a membership at geocaching.com, but people who pay for thier membership have more options open to them. This is international and you can go treasure hunting anywhere you are.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

Been thinking about getting into it myself. Im not going to use a GPS though, I want to use a topo map protracter and compass. I use to be very good at land nav and thought this would be a fun way to get back at it. Ill proably have my GPS in my pocket to track my path and see how assed up I am after 11 years of no land nav! When the kids get a bit older it will be a fun way to teach them about land nav.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

I just surveyed underground a box culvert that runs for about half a mile next to some buildings that used to hold some very secure materials and people. Found a geocache halfway down the tunnel at the entrance to stormwater management system for those secure areas. It was a full ammo can of stuff with a logbook. Seemed like a cool one to look for, but I wouldn't go down into places like that without a air tester. Have found a bunch along trail and jobsites while working.

Re: Anyone into Geocaching

My brother is into it, while he was here I went out with him on a couple. One cache we went to was built on to the side of a tree. It had all kinds of little compartments to it and was camo'ed so well if was hard to find. It's in the interstate median off of 459 and 150 in Hoover. Don't know who built it but you could call it a hide.
