Anyone know where there is firearms training in Ma

Re: Anyone know where there is firearms training in Ma

I know Smith & Wesson academy in Springfield does firearms training, took a couple of pistol courses there a few years back and was happy with it.They also do carbine, rifle and shotgun classes. I do not know the age limitations, but give them a call, good luck!

Also meant to mention Sig Sauer Academy in Exeter NH does a lot of the same classes S&W does. I have not taken any of there classes but have had friends that did and they were impressed with it.

What kind of training are you looking for? LTC courses are available all over the state and it doesn't really matter where you take it as long as it is accredited.

S&W has the best, most up to date defensive pistol training for civilians that I've seen in the state. They aren't the only ones however, Boston has some training facilities for defensive pistol tactics although I have no experience there. Start shooting IDPA once you understand the basics and feel relatively confident you won't shoot yourself!

If you want long range (for MA anyway), go to Redding Gun Club in Redding, MA and take advantage of their 600 yard range. The guys there are nice and will get you started.

Edit: If you're old enough to post on a forum you're old enough to have someone show you how to shoot. That said, you need to be 15 to get your FID and 21 for a pistol permit.

Therefore, formal training without a chaperone will require you to be 21 for pistol and I've seen some facilities require you to be 18 for rifle.

There are lots of firearms training opportunities in and around MA - it all depends on what kind of training you're looking for.

Nearly every gun club in the state offers basic NRA classes, trap/sporting clay training, highpower clinics, etc. Keep in mind, the NRA Basic Pistol or Home Firearms Safety class is required to get your firearms license in MA.

GOAL, which boasts some of the best instructors in the state, has some terrific practical course offerings: NRA Basic Pistol, intro to IDPA, Art of Concealed Carry, etc.

Smith & Wesson and Sig (NH) both have an academy with extensive classes.

NEShooters brings in top name instructors from around the country, and teaches its own defensive pistol curriculum, both of which are top notch.

Mass also hosts several top name instructors of its own: Armed Response (David Kenick), Michael DeBethencourt, Lethal Force Institute (NH)(Massad Ayoob).

And last but CERTAINLY not least the RWVA's Appleseed program is very active in New England. For the money ($70/weekend), this is the best rifleman training available, short of joining the Marines. I highly recommend you check out the Patriot's Day program (usually at Harvard, MA).

Hope that helps!
