Range Report Anyone liking the lapua 155 scenars?

Fellas,
I just thought about trying some to see how they fly. I have never shot them yet. How do you guys like them vs 175 sierras and 178 Amax's? I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times- I just get tired of looking throught 10 million threads to find it.. I know they cost a little more to buy- just wondering if they are worth it.. I would be shooting out to 1K with them- Wanting to hear some opinions. Thanks

They shoot extremely well. They have a bc of .508, and a 175 SMK has a bc of .505. They shoot about 250 fps faster on average so yea, not a bad choice.

We have customers reporting 1000 yard hits with ease.

I am starting to like them more each time I shoot them.

I tried them as well as the Berger 155 Hybrids with decent success. I have a Savage with a 1-10"twist (like all 308 Savages) and it likes the longer bullets better. I know that some people shoot them with 1-10" twist with great success, but they are really more suited to a 1-12" twist like the Remington usually has.
Although Berger has lots of great bullets they cost more. As far as a blue collar bullet for long range that my Savage 308 liked: Hornady 178gr BTHP 1.35" long with a G1 of .502 and the
Hornady 208gr Amax 1.532" long with a G1 of .633
If I had a slower twist I would have settled on very different bullets.
The Lapua 155 Scenar is 1.291" long and since Bryan Litz tested them and showed that their initial claims of a .508 G1 was overrated they have since lowered their claimed G1 to .460 http://www.lapua.com/en/products/reloading/bullets/centerfire-rifle-bullets/8
The Berger 155gr Hybrid is 1.28" long and has a G1 of .483
You might want to try that one as well if you have a 1-12" before you settle on one bullet. They cost a little more, but if your already buying Lapuas....

MikeSWammo: Please forgive me if I sound like I'm hateing on your post as it's really not my intention. I just don't want the OP to learn the wrong numbers as they can seriously affect ones choice of bullets. I agree with you that the Lapua 155 is a very good bullet and I know their is a large group of 308Win shooters that use them exclusively.

Six Feet Under: The 178gr Amax has almost the exact same BC as the 175 SMK. The only real difference is the length. If you have a slower twist it's easier to stabilize a 175gr SMK at 1.24" long than a 178gr Amax at 1.318" long. If you decide to shoot a bullet in this weight range the Hornady 178gr BTHP(not Amax) puts them both to shame in both drop and drift. They are also pretty cheap at around $1 more than the 178 Amax per hundred.

I also can't find one on the Savage site that's not a 1-10"twist. Just out of curiosity, which model isn't?

I have a Remington 5R and the 155 Scenars work great in it. Have used them out to 1000yds with success.

I have a rem 700 with a 26" mike rock 5R 1/11.25. The rifle shoot great I just thought about trying something else. It looks like the scenars fly pretty good. I have not just settled on one bullet.. I will try whatever. I will check out the bergers too.

I need to get off the machines and keep a better eye on those changes.

I will check out the bergers too. </div></div> That's a great all around twist. 10" and 12" twists both tend to have bullets that aren't so good with them.
In addition to the Lapuas and Berger Hybrids you might also feel like trying JLKs http://www.swampworks.com/jlk/ and Barnes has a 155gr Match Burner that's very inexpensive compared to the others mentioned. I used the 175gr Match Burners and I found them to be very good bullets, especially at such a low price.The 175gr Match Burners were very comparable to the hornady 178gr BTHPs in every way.

In my 308, I shot SW Ammo's 155Gr. Scenar. I have found it to have a BC of .495 all the way out to 1000 yards in my ballistic calculator.

It can go much faster than the 175 grain bullets and is much better for long range shooting because of the speed and BC numbers.

I have had great success with SW ammo. If I were you, I would buy a couple boxes from them to test them out in your rifle. Then keep the brass and load some more!!!

Or you can try the swampworks JLK's. Steve makes a very high quality bullet. The best I have seen hands down.
