Anyone shooting 260Rem in 2022?

I already carry a S&W 686 4". But it's getting harder to clearly see my sights so I'll be looking for compact pistol with red dot system.

S&W 340PD Hi-Viz. Bought mine in 2008, and before I even paid for it, I walked over to the isle and got a 3-finger Hogue grip (model #: 60000) for it (I can't stand my pinkie hanging off the end). It's been through hell and back, and all over the US, and even several hundred miles offshore. It's got A LOT of miles of CYA under it's belt, and plenty of battle scars to prove it. One of the best CCW's I've invested in. Also, I always carry Hornady Critical Defense .357 Mags in it. Can't recommend that combo enough.

In reality very rarely do I get to shoot any freakin rifle for recreation or sport anymore.
All shooting is test firing rifles prior to shipping and sometimes me shooting some .308 rounds from different positions prior to teaching a class so I don't look totally retarded if I need to roll onto the line with a rifle.

I still have a solid .260 Rem barrel with my hot shit chamber hanging on an old Surgeon and have ammo ready to go but God knows when I will make time to rock it. We slayed the piss out of some competitions with that round against fast twist 243s, 300 WIn Mags and of course .308s.

That being said, it matters not what we could do a decade ago, a year ago or even yesterday. The only thing that truly matters is what we can do today on demand. I'd like to think that what I have lost in pure skill sets is somewhat made up for with old age and treachery.

Agreed on the Hogue grip. It made a world of difference on mine. As you said, pinky not hanging off the end.

I started with a large ring Mauser 26”Douglas barrel with 1:8 twist in 2000. It shoots everything from 95 gr. vmax to 155 gr. megas really well. My favorite so far is 140 gr. SST with N160. The Mauser action allows limitless COL.

I had a S&W M49 but one former student of mine really hounded me to sell it to him. Since he was a deputy in So Cal I decided it would serve him better than me since at that time CCW's were impossible to get there. Now I live where CCW's are pretty easy to get. I know my close vision isn't going to get better unless modern medicine catches up. So what I want is an optic at some point, semi autos are better suited for that. I can still use the iron sights, and while shooting fast on multiple targets I use a "flash" sighting with irons. It's pretty similar to how people use red dots today.

Unfortunately I fall into the same situation of not getting much trigger time in, I'm sure for different reasons. I hope your idea of old age will work for me too. I'll factor in my hope that there is fear of the Dad bod. I'm sporting that look fairly well.

Hey if any of you are thinking I disregarded your suggestions I wasn't. I thought of getting another J frame with Eagle grips. I wanted it for pocket carry and though I love the Hogue grips they can be a bit grabby. The only reason I don't rejoin the five shot mafia is my vision and capacity. However later on I may get another one to augment my EDC. Pocket carry is easy and useful.

8 twist is pretty common now, but the early Remington rifles were mostly 10 twist.

Obviously, 8 is better for longer bullets

Its the best twist rate to shoot majority of the 6.5mm bullets the 260Rem chambering is optimised for, that being 120-142gn range.

I’ve had a .260 in a 1:7.5 that was excellent and allowed me to play with the 144-150gn projectiles out there with a bit more stability with very good and consistent results

I would recommend any manufacture other than Criterion... I'm sure others out there make remage pre-fits... I would contact Bartlein or Proof Research before putting money on the Criterion.

Yep...It was. But not only that, it's 2022... Button-rifling should be left for factory rifles. The cost differentiation for a high-quality cut-rifled barrel is no longer supremely higher than a button-rifled barrel. But quality still is, IMO. I would rather have a cut-rifled 5R barrel any day of the week, over a button-rifled barrel. Granted, they've gotten pretty good over the years, but if the price is negligible, might as well get the higher-quality single-point cut-rifled barrel, right? That's one reason I like Bartlein, Shilen, Obermeyer, Rock Creek, Proof Research, etc...

Yeaah my 260 AI will have a Rock Creek put on it. But I get a 7-08 Criterion to try out 180's in the future. EDC first though

Regarding button vs. cut - All Jarrett rifles have button rifled barrels, and come with an accuracy guarantee that's pretty impressive.

I've shot a few of theirs, and they live up to the reputation.

Still shooting (one of...) the original SH Ghost Dancer .260 rifles. I say "sometimes" in the response because the weather and my health are having trouble cooperating; but the same barrel from 2003 is still gettin' 'em right in there (Lothar-Walther 28" 1:8" custom). I only shoot to confirm H/L batch aggregate accuracy and zeroes. I'm saving the bore for times of greater need.

The only recent change has been to replace the HDY 140 HPBT with the Speer 140 Gold Dot. Same accuracy if not a smidge better, and the potential for better terminal performance, if needed.

I've wound my shooting activities way down lately; mostly a matter of pampering my health issues. But it seems like I can still hit 'em like I used to.

Right now, I can't handle any re-barrel or re-build jobs outside of what I originally built.
I am very fortunate to stay heavy with new rifles going out as well as constant stream of previously built rifles coming in for re-barrel/re-works of some type. I owe it to my previous customers to service their original rifle if they elect to have me do it so that will always get priority ahead of re-working rifles that were born in another shop.

It would be a dis-service to you if I took any of your outside work.
You could well be throwing your pee bucket across the nursing home hall at my room before you get it back.

Now that I sold my 6XC LRB M25 in a molded in woodland camo McM M2a stock, I may barrel my Bula forged rear lugged receiver with a 260.

Before the plandemic a good friend from Slidell came over to see me. He wanted a 338 Federal to rebarrel his M1A. Cutting a 14 barrel from a 1.25 blank was a royal pain doing it in a manual machine.

Since I am just a hobbyist with no FFL, I had him stay over till we were done. In addition, with me over his shoulder I had him run the lathe after I set up each operation.

WIth a throater, I have made a 260 Rem rifle 120 gr NBT at 3.1" OAL for more power and more accuracy.
Last year's shot a 1" (3) shot group @200 yards on sight in, and then shot a deer.

I had to make a throater extender to fit up in the chamber.

I just started fire forming brass with my 260 AI this weekend. Using Nosler 2nd's brass, Barnes Match Burner 145 gr that was delivered by Ace Ventura, Ramshot Hunter and Rem primers. Still working up a FF load as there isn't much load data. So far around a half moa but slooooow. No pressure signs even though I'm seating into the lands so I'll continue to bump up the charge.

The original load was a 142gr with 4831sc and accuracy was awesome the speed was just okay for being an Ackley

The benefit here is 2850fps, that is the sweet spot for your load, you get at or just above 2850fps in any 6.5 you load and magic will happen.

The lighter stuff, like the 130 should be well over 2900fps

2850 fps to 2950 fps or better is where I'm hoping for once fire formed. A straight 260 or even the manbun would have been fine. I reload all my ammo so a reduction of trimming is major plus for me. We'll see if that comes into fruition. The reality is I'll be using this for predator control. So if I can get a 147 ELDM, or any 140 Match bullet, shooting accurately I'll be satisfied.

A 7-08, 7 SAW, 284 Win or some 7mm will be on the short list here soon. I've been wanting to try out a 180 ELDM in a 7-08 in a 98 Mauser. Heck a 6.5 through .308 will all kill elk or moose. Some do some jobs better than others but they'll all do the job. Yotes are a priority for me right now. They've gotten soooo over populated that they are coming up to the farm houses in my area. My 260 AI and AR15 should fit the bill nicely.
