Had two hunters on from Vegas and one from New Mexico come down to the SGR. Its been a year and here it is.
Rick and Ken met up on Thursday and got the guns zeroed. Myself and Mike were guiding. Friday started out w/ RAIN which we haven't had in about a year......fog rolled in thick and made glassing near impossible, but we toughed out and walked/hiked miles and saw only 4 w/ no presentable shots. Friday night the skies opened up and we got 2.5 more inches of rain.
Saturday we slept in and headed out w/ light rain clearing skies on the way, by 9:00am the sun was shining and the sheep were on the move. Mike and I spotted 15 sheep working the side of a "mountain" about a mile out and the stalk was on. We used a dry creek bed to conceal our movement and got to w/ in 500yrds then belly crawled to w/ in 300 and were now ready to make the shot. My LRF to a shit and we had to guess and I told Mike to put his 300yrd dope on and aim at the spine. The suppressed .308 168gr Amax let out a hiss and I caught the trace, impact just beyond the ram in the rock. "rack another and dial back 1MOA.....send it! IMPACT center mass down the Ram went. "reload and nail that bastard if he even thinks of getting up"..... well another shot wasn't needed and off to fetch the trophy. As we were dragging the 275# ram down the "mountain" I said be careful but Rick decided he need some souvenirs to take home to Vegas and he fell strait into a huge cactus. So like any good guide I spent the next 15 minutes digging spines out of his back.......
Ken and Mike were not having as good of luck since he hit a "nice" ram and was unable to recover. After 8 hour and 4 guys and one dog and only 4 spots of blood we gave in and had to go w/ plan B.
Sunday we spotted a nice herd of Barbado sheep and Ken took a excellent ram as a consolation prize.
