Anyone heard of this? Im planning on going in september. From what i gather it is basically a history lesson combined with a rifle training clinic. I figure its a way to improve my shooting skills and that can never hurt. they recommend everyone use .22's as you end up shooting +-500 rounds. its mainly for iron sights but i was told it didn't matter if your rifle had a scope because the positions and basics will still apply. In most cases they will train to get out to 500 yards but my range doesnt even go to 100

You will have the 2nd and 3rd part of the AQT that will be less than 1 min with a mandatory mag change, multiple targets, starting from standing, etc. If you know how to run a bolt and can run it clean you will get all your rounds off. If you fumble and bobble, you won’t.

When I say “their” way it comes to the way I was taught to shoot a rifle it the prone position. At RO they teach you to be straight behind the rifle to fire and be right back on target. Here they are more like ”little green army men”.

Both methods are different with different equipment. If you are using a bipod which you will be at RO then you should get straight behind the rifle like a sniper would. However, you can not get straight behind the rifle in prone when only using the sling especially if you are doing it correctly. Every coach that teaches prone style with a sling will have you at a slight angle. This is how we do it in 3P when we shoot prone. Even the old Anschutz instruction manuals that came with each rifle had tips and pictures for proper shooting position with slings--3P--(Standing, Kneeling, Prone) the style of shooting you see in the olympics.

it gives a lot of great info on the program. some isnt so great but i think ill try my hand at it either way. unfortunately my only option is to shoot my savage mkll bolt action with a scope. if i had a 10/22 id use that for sure but i dont. not to sure about the whole timed thing as ive never shot in a stressful timed event like that. my range is really set up to be 25 yards and thats what we will shoot the entire time. i need to get some mags to and hopefully ill get a chance to sight myself in for that range and get a few practice sessions in before the event comes up.

I've been to a few Appleseeds. I personally learned a lot, and my abilities improved. I've read several negative things people have said about Appleseed, but I don't see anything negative about it at all. Go and have fun. I'll continue to go as often as I can. My girlfriend enjoys going as well. As long as you participate with an open mind and don't expect $1000 dollar training from it, you probably wont be disappointed.

Edited to add: The ones that I've been to, if the participant's rifle wasn't a mag fed semi, they would make slight allowances for the "handicap", if you want to call it that. I'm sure you'll do fine with your Savage. If not, there is usually a loaner rifle or two there. Several guys over at RFC have scored rifleman with bolt actions.

thanks for the positive info man! did they talk about the CMP when you were there? m1 garand for $500+- seems good to me : )

Ask the instructors for a signed attendance form for the CMP. The RWVA (the folks that conduct the Appleseeds) are one of the groups recognized by the CMP and a signed form showing you attended an Appleseed (marksmanship training/event)will be needed (along with other CMP paperwork) to get your CMP M1.

I've bought some. I think its the best deal going. My Dec. 44 SA Field Grade has the original barrel on it and the stock was beautiful as well. My other Dec. 44 SA has a 1953 LMR barrel on it and shoots like a target rifle.

I'm not sure. I know its dated but I don't remember there being an expiration date on it.

Go to the CMP website and take a look at their requirements. Print up a copy of the paperwork to fill out and either send in or carry with you to the CMP Store.

I have not shot an appleseed yet, but I did order the instructor's pack of targets and materials from fredsm14stocks. We spend a lot of time shooting the positions with the time limits. It definitely is challenging to be on target on time and I doubt I could do it with a bolt gun right now.

I shot an Appleseed in May. It was fun and informative. I used a Marlin 795 with a Nikon 4x scope. They make learning to shoot fun for beginners. The timed stages with the mag changes are a little challenging, but I qualified for Rifleman both my first and second try the first day. I guess I must have already possessed the necessary skills when I went there, as none of the other 15 shooters passed even after the second day.
One shooter commented that it was because I used a scope, but I asked him why then none of the other 5 shooters with scopes could pass. I have since bought some Tech-Sight aperture sights to try my old eyes on, but I haven't gotten to shoot with them yet.

If you like shooting irons at all you will like them. I built my 10/22 into an LTR with Tech Sights and they are well built for the $60 that they cost.

I did a group buy on the Tech Sights. They allow a C&R holder to apply for a dealer account. You have to buy them 5 at a time minimum (mix and match is OK), and the dealer prices are 15 to 20% cheaper, and shipping is a flat rate of $14. I think I paid less than $52 for my Marlin sights delivered.

I've never been to an Appleseed Event, but from what I've been told, they don't charge for Juniors and the course of fire is basicly the same course we use to shoot in the CNGB Postal Matches (Where NG Units compete on reduced targets using the M16 w/sub cal. devices. Then the winners of each state went to Nashville for a National Shoot off.)

If that's the training they do, then its pretty good, but:

Anything that helps Juniors get started right, is Number 1 in my book.

I had a great time at Appleseed. I learned a ton about positional shooting and that has helped me get into NRA highpower where I have learned even more.

I'd be surprised if you did not learn a lot and have a good time doing it.

I work the appleseed shoots and have seen folks shoot the score with bolt guns, tubefed etc, mostly I only encourage them to take a loaner when they have malfunctions that cannot be remedied or the rifle they brought can not be adjusted to fit them. If the end of the second day is approaching and they are not getting off all there shots on the rapid fire stages but otherwise would shoot the score I will also see if they want to change to a tuned 10/22, some of the most satisfied shooters are those who resist my tempting and shoot the score on the last AQT of the day with there own bolty etc

I attended an appleseed with my wife. It wasn't for us, but there were several there that had gone to multiple shoots.

I found the use of sling and some of their positions to be helpful. I wasn't crazy about how they insisted that I not position myself behind the rifle in the prone position.

My rifle was zero'ed before the class, but was off when we started shooting. Their attitude was oh well and there was no interest in allowing me to take 5 minutes to zero. I pretty much had to make adjustments on the fly between lessons.

The turn off started when I felt a bit of an agenda. Topics started to get political and while I didn't disagree with most of what was said, I didn't feel like discussing politics while at a shoot. I wouldn't say it was a wasted day, but I don't see my wife of myself attending any other appleseed shoots.

Hello,

I shot rifleman on my second target using my modified 10/22 (Tech-Sights, extended mag release). It's challenging, and I say that being someone who shoots a few thousand rounds per week.

They allowed me to break out my MkII BTVS after that. I shot rifleman with that as well after a couple tries, but it was <span style="font-style: italic">very</span> challenging using a bolt action. I was unable to empty the magazines completely each time.

The Appleseeds are a fun but challenging event. While I have come close to the 210 Riflemans score (consistantly 205) I strongly disagree with the other poster who said it was political. Unless your a flaming lib, you should feel right at home.

They are political....not partisan but for sure political.

By the nature as how certain parties act, it may appear that way. That being said the official line (yes I am a ITT) that they are not partisan....hell look at the NRA......(a discussion for another place and another time)

Some people complain about what our country has become over the last 230 years.
Many people try to make our country's future look like their dream.
The dreamers who seem to be winning are those who distrust guns and love regulation.
I prefer more freedom and self responisbility than current law permits.
Appleseed is a step in the right direction.

I took my youngest son to an Appleseed in September 2006. You know what I remember about it?

I remember the smiles on the instructor's faces.

I remember one of the instructor's loaning my son a sling for his FAL.

I remember the fun my son had and the look on his face as we laid out there on the mats and shot almost 400 rounds in two days. I remember the smiles as he when to the full distance range on day 2 and hit the targets out to 300 yds. with a real rifle he'd never shot past 25 yds. until that day. Yeah, I know, 300 yds. ain't so far but for a teenager with an iron sighted FAL and surplus SA ammo it was a fair distance for him.

I remember the long talks we had on the trip down to that farm and the trip back. That Appleseed was the reason I became an Appleseed instructor. The look on my son's face when he found out that what they teach works.

Bonnie and I went to an Appleseed and had a pretty rough time. We are experienced match shooters but the frenzied pace and the unrelenting no breaks schedule did us in. The attitude above is exactly what we found. If you can't keep up....Oh well.

Bonnie has a disability and needs to shoot from a small table that I built for her. I arranged for the accommodation in advance but they disqualified her from shooting for record after we arrived. That's just chicken!

No more Appleseeds for us!

Appleseed has changed since then to adapt to disabled shooters.
That is what we have done. After you asked tdow "what will you do"
There in nothing in the course of fire to prevent you from adjusting your sights during the prep period.
Things needed for the shoot include, Sighted and lubed rifle, and teachable attitude.
