AR-10 failure to feed

I am having some issues with my AR-10 in .308 wanting to feed sometimes. It will strip the round out of the magazine but wedges it into the left side of the receiver by the barrel extension. I changed to ammo designed for a gas gun but have yet to try it out on FGMM so I'm thinking it might be the ammo.

Re: AR-10 failure to feed

I always suspect magazines first...if a number of different magazines do the same thing, then you can eliminate that variable. But with semi-autos, I always consider the magazine first whenever there are feeding issues.

^^ That right there is the 1st thing that you check

Re: AR-10 failure to feed

I am curious if it only does it with the rounds stacked on the left side of the magazine. If it does my first thought would be to look at the lip on the magazine. I would then inspect the feed ramps and look for uniformity side to side. Hopefully it is the ammunition but if not check these two things.

Re: AR-10 failure to feed

It does it with multiple magazines. It is a Gap built ar-10 that I bought last year from a guy that had never fired it. It has a 20" barrel and it looks like the standard armalite buffer and buffer spring. All three magazines are basically new and they work fine with my .260.

Are you saying that is is an ARMALITE tricked-out/barreled by GAP?

Re: AR-10 failure to feed

Sounds like underpowered ammo or a gas system blockage somewhere.

Check and make sure the gas block has not turned or slipped.

But probably ammo related.

Your BCG is not being reliably pushed all the way to the rear everytime.

Re: AR-10 failure to feed

I am hoping to go out shooting tomorrow so I can take a few different kinds of ammo to see if I can figure this out.

Re: AR-10 failure to feed

Got your post on "ARMALITE buffer and spring". Sorry, used to teach Observation years ago...

Now, I blame any problems on me being the only male in a house of three daughters (23, 21, 17) and a wife.

At the least, they still let me in the door.

Re: AR-10 failure to feed

An easy way to check ammo is to load a single round in your mag and hold the gun out at arms length so it is free recoiling (NOT against your shoulder or held tightly), when you fire the round it should lock the bolt to the rear.

Do this with at least 3 rounds, if it won't reliably lock the bolt to the rear, it needs more gas pressure, either with a bigger gas port or ammo that will deliver the proper pressure.
